2 ROANOKE WOMEN RAPED AT GUNPOINT

A MAN offered to drive one of the women home. Teens are sought in the other case.

A 28-year-old woman was raped at gunpoint early Sunday by a man who offered to drive her to a relative's home.

Police said the woman was on Fairfax Avenue Northwest at about 4:50 a.m. when she asked the man to drive her to a cousin's home. Instead, the man drove her to Staunton Park in Northwest Roanoke, where he pulled a handgun from underneath his car seat. Police said he sodomized and raped the woman, then threw her out of the car. She walked to a pay phone on Lafayette Boulevard N.W. and called police.

In an incident sometime last week, a 34-year-old woman was raped at gunpoint by three masked teen-agers behind a middle school in Northwest Roanoke.

Police said the woman did not speak English. The woman's daughter interpreted for police, but had difficulty describing the crime. The woman reported the rape to police on Friday.

Police gave this account of what happened: Three teen-age boys approached the woman near Ruffner Middle School at 3602 Ferncliff Ave. N.W. and demanded money. Two of the boys held handguns. The woman told the boys she had no money. The boys forced her behind a trash bin and raped her.

The woman told detectives that just before she reported the crime, the boys approached her again and demanded money from her. When she refused to give them any, they threatened to rape her. One of the boys stopped the others and told the woman that her daughters would be hurt if she reported the crime.
