15 ELEMENTARY KIDS SLIGHTLY HURT IN WRECK TEEN-AGER HITS BUS IN FRANKLIN COUNTY

Fifteen Dudley Elementary school students were taken to a hospital Monday after a car slammed into the back of their school bus in Franklin County.

The accident happened about 8 a.m. on Hardy Road, said state Trooper Tim Harris.

No one was seriously injured.

Harris said a girl was transported to the hospital from the wreck scene and 14 other students complained of minor pains once they arrived at the elementary school a little later. The children were treated and released, Harris said.

The driver of the car that hit the bus - a 17-year-old high school student - was charged with driving too fast. Harris didn't release the juvenile's name.

The bus was stopped on Hardy Road, a busy thoroughfare that leads to Smith Mountain Lake, when the car hit it. The bus lights and its other warning signals were on, Harris said.

The student driver said he saw the bus, but the car slid when he slammed on his brakes, Harris said.

Damage to the bus didn't prevent it from being driven. The car had to be towed from the scene, Harris said.
