Retirees are hard at work at the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Montgomery County and Radford. In 1996, senior volunteers performed 60,000 hours of service to the Montgomery County community through a special program that matches a senior's talents with the community's needs.
From cleaning up Pandapas Pond to teaching crafts to preschoolers, there are many services being performed by members of RSVP.
"This program, I think, is nice because it involves people who are 55 or over," says Victoria Scott, director of RSVP. "They're getting out into the community and helping others. The community itself actually receives a lot of benefit from these folks."
Even though the seniors enjoy themselves, Scott says the program should not be mistaken as a social club. The seniors recently stuffed 40,000 envelopes for the Montgomery County Commissioner of Revenue.
"They do work hard," she says, "They save the county a tremendous amount of money."
The program began in 1973 and has since won a number of awards, including the 1995 Governor's Award for Volunteerism Excellence and a letter of commendation from Vice President Al Gore.
RSVP has just moved to new offices in the Health and Human Services Building at 210 Pepper St. in Christiansburg.
Anyone over the age of 55 can participate in the program. There are no experience requirements or minimum commitments. To volunteer call RSVP at 382-5775.
