Phi Beta Kappa scholar to visit Virginia Tech
BLACKSBURG - Kenneth J. Gergen, the Gil and Frank Mustin Professor of Psychology at Swarthmore College, will lecture and lead discussions in several classes at Virginia Tech March 13 and 14 as Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar.
Gergen will give a public lecture, "Technology, Self and the Moral Project," March 13, 4 p.m. in the Hillcrest Living Room. March 14 at 3:30 p.m. he will address the Psychology Colloquium in 102 G. Burke Johnston Student Center.
Author of 21 books, his writings include "The Saturated Self: Dilemmas of Identity in Everyday Life," and "Reality and Relationships."
Hospice training sessions to begin
CHRISTIANSBURG - New River Valley Hospice Inc. will hold training sessions for new volunteers Mondays and Wednesdays for five weeks, beginning March 19, 6-8:30 p.m. at the hospice office, 111 West Main St.
Trained volunteers are needed in home care, bereavement care, fund raising and office support. The training is free and open to the public. The health care agency serves Montgomery, Giles, Floyd and Pulaski counties and Radford. Call Mary North or Barbara Green, 381-5001, for more information.
Girl Scout reunions planned
BLACKSBURG - All former and current Girl Scouts in this area are invited to attend local reunions as part of Girl Scouting's 85th anniversary this year.
The Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council will sponsor reunions at Auburn United Methodist Church, Riner, on Saturday 2-4 p.m.; First United Methodist Church, Pearisburg, on March 16 3-6 p.m.; and Central United Methodist Church, Radford, on March 16 2-4 p.m.

Philosophers to meet in Blacksburg
The Virginia Tech philosophy department will host scholars from around the country at its 14th Annual Spring Conference Friday-Sunday..
The conference, to be held at the Blacksburg Marriot, is open to the public. This year's themes include Aristotle's Theory of Intellectual Virtue.
Agricultural concerns to be aired
The 61st annual meeting of the Southwest Virginia Agricultural Association Inc. will be held in Ratliff Hall at the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center in Abingdon, at 9 a.m., Saturday.
Committees will discuss concerns in areas such as livestock, crops, agri-business and governmental affairs.

Culture students gather at RU
Graduate students from around the nation will meet at Radford University to discuss theories of gender, nationhood and popular and material culture.
"Culture and the Literary" is an interdisciplinary graduate conference that will feature a keynote speech by Lillian S. Robinson, author of "Sex, Class and Culture."
The registration fee of $20 for students and $30 for all others includes lunch.
The conference is scheduled for March 22, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Radford Campus.
Nominations sought for special awards
The Christiansburg-Montgomery County and Blacksburg Regional chambers of commerce are seeking nominations for two special awards.
The Award of Excellence in Education honors outstanding teachers, administrators and support staff. The Business-Industry Award recognizes the contributions of the commercial sector of the community. The awards will be presented at a joint chamber luncheon April 8 at the Best Western Red Lion Inn Blacksburg.
Nomination forms can be picked up from either chamber office and from the Montgomery County School Board personnel office. Nominations are due March 24.
Bowling league formed for mentally disabled
Participants and volunteer assistants are needed for the Spring Unified Bowling League, a league consisting of persons with and without mental disabilities.
The league if offered by the New River Agency for Personas with Mental Retardation/ Leisure Directions, in cooperation with Area 9 Special Olympics and Triangle Bowling Lanes.
Fees are $2.50 per person per week, including shoe rental.
The league meets each Sunday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., beginning March 16, at Triangle Bowling Lanes. A special informational meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. March 16.
