W&L ROLLS TO 16-4 WIN IN LACROSSE

Ninth-ranked Washington and Lee routed visiting Lynchburg 16-4 on Tuesday in a Division III men's lacrosse game behind senior attackman Ande Jenkins' six goals.

Ed Dougherty scored three goals and Shane McLaughlin added two goals and three assists for the Generals (2-0 overall, 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference). Jason Haslbeck had three goals for Lynchburg (0-2, 0-1).

In other sports news in the region:

8 Virginia Tech won a pair of one-run decisions at the Fort Myers (Fla.) Softball Tournament.

In the opener, the Hokies wasted a three-run lead in the top of the seventh before edging Monmouth (N.J.) 5-4 in eight innings. Freshman third baseman Kara Krumhardt led Tech with three hits.

In the second game, the Hokies scored three runs in the first two innings, then held on for a 3-2 victory over Villanova. Senior co-captain Jennie Kallio (Cave Spring High School) picked up the victory in her first decision of the season for Tech (4-2).

* Sherron Braxton pitched a four-hitter and struck out 11 as Ferrum won 8-3 to complete a doubleheader sweep of Emory & Henry at the Gene Cusick Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

Riley Hodges (Franklin County) was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, and Todd Cunningham doubled, homered, drove in two runs and scored three as the Panthers (5-1) beat the Wasps 9-5 in the first game. Emory & Henry is 0-4.

* Chris Thorne led off the sixth inning with a solo homer that put Rollins in front to stay in a 5-3 victory over Virginia Tech at the Rollins College Baseball Week Tournament in Winter Park, Fla.

The teams combined for 10 errors, and all the runs but Thorne's homer were unearned. Chad Foutz (Franklin County) and Matt Reynolds (William Byrd) had RBI singles for the Hokies (2-5). Rollins is 10-6.

* Eric Stanton had four of South Carolina's 17 hits as the Gamecocks beat VMI 16-6 in a baseball game in Columbia, S.C.

Jay Carlos, Derick Urquhart and Adam Poe hit solo home runs for South Carolina (12-3). Franco Martin had four of 15 hits for VMI (4-9).

* Courtney Hubbard scored three goals and Maeghan O'Doherty added two goals and one assist as Virginia Tech defeated Drexel 10-6 in a women's lacrosse game in Philadelphia.

* Virginia's Kelly Miller has been invited to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships to compete in the long jump. Miller's best leap of 6.22 meters qualified her for the meet Friday and Saturday at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.
