Meetings at a glance

The Montgomery County School Board approved a committee to examine what to do with abandoned school buildings. Known for his creative project acronyms, Facilities and Maintenance Director Larry Schoff dubbed the Facility Use/Needs committee as FUN. Community and school faculty members, plus a member of the Board of Supervisors, would be included in the committees. A group would form in each of the four areas, and consider what could be done with soon-to-be abandoned buildings such as Bethel Elementary, Christiansburg Middle School and Shawsville High School, once new schools are constructed. Schoff's last great acronymic innovation was the FUSS, or Facilities Use/Space Study, which laid the groundwork for the county's school-building plan.

The School Board also reported more than 200 people have returned surveys detailing requests for a new superintendent. Sockwell Associates, the firm hired to find a new leader to replace present Superintendent Herman Bartlett, reported more than 200 surveys turned in by this week. Based on those surveys, plus personal interviews, the firm is developing advertisements to be run nationally in the next few weeks.
