KIDS AND PARENTS CAN LEARN ABOUT THE NIFTY 50 STATES CARILION SITE LETS YOU CHECK OUT DOCTORS, GET REFERRALS

The National Association of Securities Dealers has a Web service to help beginners learn about investing.

Welcome to the newest homegrown business to hit the Web: Carilion Health System. If you don't recognize it that way, think of the two large hospitals that inhabit Roanoke, one that clings to Mill Mountain and the other that sits across from Elmwood Park.

Next, recall all those doctors' practices that now answer the telephone with a Carilion prefix to their names. That's it, and it's a rather fancy site complete with instant e-mail capability for anyone wanting a physician referral.

Carilion.com not only gives the giant company's mission statement - we all have one, don't we? - but it also allows you to browse for doctors with particular specialities and look into educational and support group opportunities.

And if you're job-hunting, the site can be a real find, because it lists all the clinical and nonclinical positions available.

The site also provides links to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart and Lung associations as well as to Roanoke's College of Health Sciences.

Carilion bills itself as the system that "hasn't forgotten its roots."

However, it ought to forget the blinking info trailer - the kind television uses to scare people about weather. The rolling line distracts too much from the good stuff above it.

Learning about nifty 50

Our thanks to Kay Koehler of Roanoke for passing along a tip about a nifty, easy-to-use World Wide Web site that offers basic information about all 50 states and their capital cities.

Click your way to the Virginia page, and you'll find a bizarre link called "Permanent Residents," which essentially is a listing of some of the famous people buried in the state's cemeteries. For example, we were aware that legendary Confederate cavalry commander J.E.B. Stuart was buried in the state but were a bit surprised to discover that his Union counterpart Philip Sheridan is buried here, too. Sheridan and dozens of other famous people rest in Arlington National Cemetery. .

Another fascinating link that has some research potential can be found on the site's home page. It's called Librarian's Site du Jour, which each day offers up a variety of eclectic Web sites. The March 4 offerings include recipes from the TV show "Good Morning America," and the March 3 page provides an overview of airline disasters and links to safety data and information.

Investing

The National Association of Securities Dealers has constructed a Web service aimed at educating the novice about investing. The Web site is offered by the NASD's Office of Individual Investor Services, which also is producing a nationwide public service advertising campaign to raise awareness of background checks on securities dealers that are available to the public.

In addition to investor training, NASD's Individual Investor Service's Web site provides market research, financial calculators, a newsletter and brochures.
