BOGGS, James P., (``Jack""), 89, of Salem, died at the VA Medical Center in Salem, Va. on Wednesday, March 5, 1997. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice T. Boggs and is survived by his wife, Florence M. Boggs; his son and daughter-in-law, Phillip O. and Geneva S. Boggs; stepdaughter, Joyce Coleman; granddaughters, Robin and Vicki Boggs; grandson and wife, Cary and Dana Boggs; great-grandchildren, Melinda and Morgan Boggs. The both will be transported to Laurens, S.C. for burial. BOUSMAN, Denton Curtis 78 of Roanoke passed away Wednesday, March 5, 1997. Mr. Bousman was a retired Roa d Engineer with Norfolk & Western Railroad. He was a member Enon Baptist Church and a member of the Hollins Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pansy M. Bousman. BROOKS, Lola Myrtle, 93, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 4, 1997. She was the widow of Grover C. Brooks, Sr. She is survived by a son, Grover C. Brooks, Jr., Roanoke; six sisters, Mrs. G. G. Ayers, Roanoke, Mrs. Mary Booth and Mrs. Nellie Smith, both of Christiansburg, Mrs. Lois Trump and Ms. Wanda Gilbert, both of Shawsville, and Mrs. Mayo Shepard, Buena Vista; a brother, James Gilbert, Terre Haute, Ind.; several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Rev. Harold C. Lewis officiating. Involved with local retail Miller & Rhodes and Heironimus to name a few Helena will best be remembered for her outgoing personality and friendly manner. CUNNINGHAM, Robert Ernest, 76, of Raleigh, N.C., died Monday, March 3, 1997, at Rex Hospital in R aleigh. He was born January 17, 1921 in Memphis, Tenn. Mr. Cunningham received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from California Institute of Technology in June 1942. He received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Virginia in June 1954. He retired in 1979 from Monsanto Company in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary Mitchell Cunningham; sons, Robert E. Cunningham Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla., John P. Cunningham and daughter-in-law, Betsy B. Cunningham, of Weymouth, Mass.; daughter, Sally C. Johnson and son-in-law, Stuart K. Johnson, of Poquoson; three grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted from the Mitchell Family Cemetery, 11 a.m. Friday, with Dr. Joe R. Bryant officiating. DOVE, Leslie Guy, 85, of Roanoke, formerly of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital. He was a retiree from VPI and SU after serving 46 years as meat cutter. He was a loving Christian man, always ``Grandy"" to his family. Leslie was a member of Cave Spring United Methodist Church. He had strong feelings for the First Baptist Church. He attended Wednesday night dinners and services accompanied by his loving daughter, Mary. He was predeceased by his first wife, Grace Kirk Dove. Surviving are his wife, Frances Lois Wright Dove, Roanoke; a son, Alvin G. and wife, Florence D. Dove, Radford; a daughter, Mary D. Grindstaff and husband, H. T. Grindstaff, Troutville; grandchildren, Anita and Hite Baker, Perkasie, Pa., Priscilla and Robert Rudd, Stephens City, Sarah and Marty St.Clair, Daleville, Michael and Elaine Dove, Christiansburg, Dr. Joseph and Dr. Patricia Dove, Atlanta, Ga., Kathleen and Danny Stump, Stephens City, David L. Dove, Radford; 16 great-grandchildren. HART, Marion Theresa, 81, of Harrisonburg, formerly of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997 in the Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Born in Charleroi, Penn. on June 4, 195 she was the daughter of the late John Bell and Mary Albright Dixon. Mrs. Hart received a BS Degree from the Univeristy of California, California, Penn. She was a member of the Buena Vista Prebyterian Church, the Society of Former FBI Women, a past President of Buena Vista Woman's Club and past President of Women of the church. She was also a member of the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxillary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank T. Hart Jr. She is survived by her mother-in-law, Beulah Wilson Hart of Lexington. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 7, 1997 at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rebekah Maul and the Rev. Paul O'Gorek officiating. HAYNES, Harry W., Jr., 71, of Boones Mill, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 1997 in a Roanoke hospital. He was the husband of Betty Grant Haynes. Further information will be provided Friday. HIGGS, Eva Gladys, 87, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 1997, in Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley. She was born March 9, 1909. Surviving are her husband, Carlus S. Higgs of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Glenn Harris, Salem; three sons, Cullen (Frank) Higgs, Roanoke, Carlos (Butch) Higgs, Roanoke, Oakley E. HOBSON, Robert Junior, 61, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, March 2, 1997. He was born in Bedford to the late Dee and Ada Jennings Hobson. Survivors include three sisters, Elizabeth Clapp, Norfolk, Nannie Preston, Roanoke, and Elsie Reeves, Thaxton; six brothers, Peter S. (Mary) Hobson, Perris, Calif., Dallas E. Hobson, Montvale, Harry R. (Ca rolyn C.) Hobson, Blue Ridge, Melvin Hobson, Philadelphia, Pa., Claude M. (Carolyn) Hobson, and Russell L. (Kathleen) Hobson, both of Montvale; one uncle, Walter Jennings, Thaxton; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. HOWELL, Clelia Gillispie, 83, of Salem, died Wednesday morning, March 5, 1997 at Community Hospital. She was born in Floyd on December 8, 1913. She is survived by her husband, Everette G. Howell; daughter, Virginia Bryant; a son and daughter-in-law, Dewey and Andriette Goode; also a son, William Howell; daughters, Patricia Ferg uson, Stephanie Howell; four sisters, Margaret Scott, Evelyn Maxey, Millie Swain, Chelsea Dearing; grandchildren, Dewey and Jackie Bryant, Sonja Goode Morin, Katrina and Michael Goode. Graveside services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Pete Bain officiating. HUDLER, Lula Esther, 94, of Roanoke, formerly of Mouth of Wilson, Va., the Grassy Creek Community, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 1997 at the Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center, Salem, Va. She was the widow of Robert Clay Hudler. She was born May 3, 1902 at Mouth of Wilson, the Grassy Creek Community, to George Lee Reeves and Ettie Cox Reeves and was a member of Grassy Creek United Methodist Church, having served as Sunday School Teacher and president of Methodist Women and Church Steward. Surviving are her daughter, Marie H. Brown, Roanoke; two granddaughters, Peggie B. Barker, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Rebecca B. Kennedy, Roanoke; four great-grandchildren, Angela Barker, Melanie Barker, both of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sarah Kennedy, Kathleen Kennedy, both of Roanoke; and nephew, W. T. Payne, Jr., Asheville, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 8, 1997 at 11 a.m. at the Grassy Creek United Methodist Church, Grassy Creek, with interment in the Reeves Family Cemetery. The Rev. HUTCHINSON, William Miller, 80, of Westport Conn., formerly of Roanoke, died Friday, January 31, 1997 in Westport Conn. He was born on June 22, 1916 in Norfolk Va., the son of Edward Whisner and Clementine Chapman Hutchinson. He attended schools in Charleston, W. Va. and graduated from the Cleveland School of Art, where he received the Agnes Gund Scholarship Award as a senior in 1938. He served as a Captain in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Second World War in the Philippines and New Guinea, where he participated in several initial landings. Following the war he moved to Roanoke and worked as an Illustrator with Hauck Advertising Agency and Stone Printing Company. During this time he painted the large Muriel which is still to be seen at Grand Piano Company, downtown Roanoke. From 1950 to the present he worked as an Illustrator of Children's Books in New York City and Westport, Conn., producing well over 100 trade and text books. He wrote and illustrated books on seashells, clocks, coins, the theatre and space travel. Among his most popular illustrated books are Black Beauty, Beautiful Joe, Biographies of George Washington and Robert E. Lee. His Publishers included, Maxton Publishing Company, Harcourt Brace and The American Baptist Sunday School Board. He is survived by his sister, Adele Hutchinson Watkins, Lynchburg; two cousins, Helen Chapman Cobbs and Sophie Chapman Ingles, both from Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will take place, Saturday, March 8, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Lapsley Chapel of The First Presbyterian Church, in Roanoke. Interment to follow in the East Hill Cemetery, Salem. Arrangements are being handled by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

KNEPPER, Clarence Leroy, (``Jake''), 74, of Dublin, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 1997, at Carilion Radford Community Hospital. He was retired from the Fire Department of Hercules with 34 years of service. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a member of Fairlawn Presbyterian Church, member of the New River Sams Camping Club, charter member of the Fairlawn Fire Department with 28 years of service, and a lifetime member of the VFW. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Nicewander Knepper; and by one brother, Walter Knepper. Survivors include his wife, Audrey B. Knepper of Dublin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna Kay and Doug Martin of Newport, and Barbara Sue and Early Duncan of Radford; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Vicky and Lee Wensel of Christiansburg; one sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Calvin Sipple of Meyersdale, Pa.; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Regina Knepper of Richmond; two grandchildren, Perry D. and David D. LAVINDER, Maurice Lynwood, (``Jack''), 86, of Salem, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, a life long Salem resident. He retired in 1972 from General Electric Company, where he worked for 16 years as a Supervisor. He was a Navy World War II veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Frier Lavinder. Survivors include his son, M. L. ``Lynn'' Lavinder, II and his wife, Margie, Salem; a grandson, Bill Lavinder, Atlanta, Ga.; brother, S. MARTIN, Harry Thomas, 93 a resident of Roanoke United Methodist Home formerly of Vinton passed away Wednesday, March 5, 1997 at Lewis Gayle Hospital. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Hiler Martin. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Bondurant Martin; a son, Winston (Wink) D. Martin and his wife, Harriett of Salem; daughters, Audrey M. Ferguson, Betty M. Oyler and Beveline M. Noel and her husband Marion of Roanoke, Dianne M. Johnson and husband James C. of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; also surviving are 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Martin was a charter member of Midland Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. RALSTON, Bruce Edward, 47, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and formerly of Staunton, died Monday, March 3, 1997. He was born on May 9, 1949 in Staunton, a son of the late Guy Anderson Ralston Jr. and Elaine Fisher Ralston Kemp. Mr. Ralston was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Oak Ridge, Tenn.. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors include three daughters, Angela Fay Ralston, Alyssa Joy Ralston, and Amber Elaine Ralston, all of Knoxville, Tenn.; devoted friend, Faye Ralston of Knoxville; stepfather, Robert L. Kemp of Fairfield; nephews, Steve Ralston of Oklahoma, Eric Ralston of Connecticut; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Steve Ralston. TABBUT, Donald Leon, 76, of Lexington, died Wednesday, March 5, 1997, at his residence. Mr. Tabbut was born in Maine on April 5, 1920, and was a son of the late Arthur Ralph Tabbut and Nellie C. Bray Tabbut. He was a retired printer at Washington and Lee University. Mr. Tabbut is survived by his wife, Mary L. Tabbut, Lexington; one daughter, Joan T. Kessinger, Lexington; two sons, Robert L. THROCKMORTON, Dorothy Louise Quinn, 93, of Sumter, S.C., died Wednesday, February 26, 1997 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Richmond, she was the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Annie Brooks Quinn. She was the widow of Archer R. Throckmorton Jr. She was a member of the American Legion Auxillary and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a Methodist. Surviving is a niece, Barbara Andelton of Sumter, S.C. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, 1997 at the McGuire Park United Methodist Church with Dr. Maurice G. Hancock officiating. WILKINSON, Lee Link, 67, of Pearisburg, died Wednesday morning, March 5, 1997. Lee was born in Giles County on October 29, 1929, and was a daughter of the late George E. and Goldie Merrix Link. She was also preceded in death by her husband, S. Henry Wilkinson in 1986. Lee retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant January 31, 1991, after 39 years. She was a charter member of the Ingram Village United Methodist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Stacey, husband Rodney White; and one granddaughter, Carly Grace White of Craig County; three sons and daughters-in-laws, Sam Wilkinson and wife, Judy, and one grandson, Matthew, of Richmond, George Wilkinson and wife, Brenda, of Pearisburg; to her family is added her stepson, Thomas ``Bud'' Wilkinson, wife, Patty, one granddaughter, Debby; and three great-granddaughters of Richmond. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Hoy of Lone Rock, Ore., Sherry Snead of Mebane, N.C.; her aunt, Lucy M. Jennelle of Pembroke; and her stepfather, W. O. Mosley of Burlington, N.C. Graveside funeral services will be held at the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg Friday, March 7, 1997, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Joy Ranch in Hillsville.
