Black bear research|

ABINGDON - Mike Pelton of the University of Tennessee Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries will discuss his research on black bears at 1 p.m. April 7 at Virginia Highlands Community College.

His study in Great Smoky Mountains National Park has become the world's longest continuous study of bears. He and his students also have studied bears in Spain, Norway and Russia and South America.

Pelton also will present photographs. His talk will be followed at 2:15 p.m. by John Baker, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, offering practical advice on bear research and an update on bears around Clinch Mountain and Mount Rogers. The programs are free.

Publishing conference|

ABINGDON - A three-hour video conference on how to publish and promote a book will be offered at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 30.

Topics will include publishing trends, marketing, book packaging and design, royalties and independent publishing. Participants will hear about consolidation of major book publishers, the book superstore phenomenon, the emergence of independent publishing, niche marketing and selling on the Internet.

The program is a service of the University of Virginia Center in Abingdon and 153 West Booksellers and Gallery. Tuition is $30. Participants must pre-register by April 10 by calling 628-6327 or (800) 792-3683.

Hired at Emory & Henry|

EMORY - Michelle A. Prosser, former campaign manager for Ninth Congressional District Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, has been named director of foundation relations and prospect research at Emory & Henry College.

The Charlottesville native has BA and MA degrees from the University of Virginia in rhetoric and communications studies. As Boucher's campaign manager, she supervised a 10-person staff, $500,000 budget and more than 50 fund-raising activities.

She worked previously as director of press advance for Mary Sue Terry's 1993 campaign for governor, as deputy communications director for then-Gov. Doug Wilder, senior research assistant in the office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth during Gov. Gerald Baliles' term, and as deputy press secretary for then-Gov. Charles Robb.

She is an adjunct faculty member at Emory & Henry where she teaches English and public speaking. Last fall, she taught a course on campaigns and elections, and has also taught at Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon and Virginia Intermont College in Bristol.
