SUPERVISOR DOESN'T WANT THE FAX

It's hard to get away from information these days. If it's not an ever-present car phone, it's a personal fax machine pouring out more information than you want.

At least one member of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors is putting up a stiff fight from being dragged into the information age.

The supervisors, as part of their budget deliberations this week, talked about paying for fax machines for four board members who do not have them.

But Supervisor Joe Stewart - one of the faxless four - said he did not want one even though county administrators have said it would ease communication with board members. The estimated cost of the machines is $2,000.

Supervisors Henry Jablonski, Jim Moore and Chairman Joe Gorman already have fax machines.

The supervisors also are considering giving themselves a raise. Moore, who recently announced he will not seek a third term, suggested a $9,000 annual salary for board members. They are currently paid $6,924 a year.

Last year, a proposed 10 percent raise for the board received no support. Moore said the job requires lengthy meetings and time commitments beyond regular board meetings. People who initially express interest in running for the Board of Supervisors are put off when they find out the salary, Moore said. Other supervisors seemed more agreeable to an increase than last year, but stressed they knew what the pay was when they ran for the positions.
