Terry Smusz, New River Community Action's executive director, has been named by a statewide organization as its citizen of the year.
The award will be conveyed to Smusz by the Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers at a March 14 meeting in Charlottesville.
The association says the award recognizes outstanding contributions to human services.
Smusz is being cited for her work with New River Community Action's anti-poverty and health care programs for low income citizens, and for volunteering on the boards of several community organizations.
The award is part of the Virginia chapter's observance of National Professional Social Work Month.
