A Roanoke dentist was killed Friday in a one-car accident in Botetourt County.
Dr. Elmer King Adams, 73, was alone, driving east on Virginia 628 about 5 p.m. when the accident occurred.
Adams suffered chest and internal injuries and several broken bones.
He died Friday night at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Virginia State Police Trooper M.S. Austin said.
Witnesses told Austin that Adams was slumped over the steering wheel with his head on his chest before the accident.
Adams apparently awakened as his truck strayed into the oncoming lane, the witnesses said. He tried to return to his lane but gradually went off the right side of the road and struck a tree.
No skid marks were left on the highway, Austin said.
Alcohol was a factor in the accident, Austin said. Adams was not wearing a seat belt.
Adams practiced dentistry in Roanoke for 32 years.
