BOWEN, Iona Cox, 64, of Covington, died Sunday, March 9, 1997. Funeral 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Arritt Funeral Home Chapel.

BRIDGEMAN, Mary Susie, 72, of Marion, died Sunday, March 9, 1997. Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday, Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel.

DOWNING, Lake Erie, (``Pookie""), A.K.A. Rosa, 50, of Roanoke, departe d this life on Friday, March 7, 1997 at his home. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary ``Peg"" Brower; and a nephew, Rashad Williams. Surviving include his father, Nathaniel ``Big Andy"" Brower of Roanoke; sisters, Sarah Williams-Thomas of Suitland, Md., Natalie and Celestine Brower, Mary Adeito, Norma Anderson all of Roanoke; aunts, Lucille Holmes, Philadelphia, Penn., Ann Harvey, Elliston; two uncles, Charles Stallings, Fredericksburg, Russell Stallings, Salem; nieces, Cherie and LaKeisha Brower, Danille Thomas; two nephews, Ray-mond and Dequante Brower; very close friend, Dale Thomasson; also surviving are other family and friends. He was also loved by his friends in the Gay Community. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 1997 at Lotz Roanoke Chapel with Father Anthony Hash officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home. ELLIS, Minnie Elizabeth Amos, 87, of Bedford County, passed away Sunday, March 9, 1997, in a Bedford nursing home. Surviving are her children, Ray Ellis and Calvin (``Bunk"") Ellis, both of Roanoke, Louise Robertson and husband Olen of Hardy, Marie Bobbitt and husband Aubrey of Moneta, Bill Ellis and wife Marie of Roanoke, Robert (``Buck"") Ellis and wife Gay of Montvale; one sister, Mary McGuire of Hardy; one brother, Junior Amos of Vinton; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Ninevah Church in Hardy, with the Rev. Clayton Leonard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. GIBBS, Bradford Charles Jr., 79, of Roanoke, went to meet his Lord on Saturday, March 8, 1997. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bette W. Gibbs; sons and daughters-in-law, Bradford C. III and Kerry Lynn Gibbs, Richard L. and Debbie S. Gibbs, Jack R. and Ruth M. Gibbs, and grandchildren, Richard Bradford Gibbs, Kristia Lynn Gibbs, Tamatha Gibbs, Erin Gibbs, Shirley Lauren Gibbs, Hannah Nicole Gibbs, Jacob Bradford Gibbs and Hailee Gibbs. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 1997, at Oakey's North Chapel, with the Rev. Harry Christie and the Rev. Harold Moffitt officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Oakey's North Chapel. GRAVELY, John William, 64, of Petersburg, died Saturday, March 8, 1997. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday, McKee Funeral Service Chapel, Martinsville.

HARLESS, Edmond Richard, 82, of Parrott, died Sunday, March 9, 1997 at his home. He was a retired employee of the N&W Railroad and a veteran of World War II. Surviving include his wife, Hazel M. Harless, Parrott; three daughters, Betty H. Cox, Frances Hodge, an d Lois Blevins all of Radford; a son, Richard W. Harless, Radford; five stepdaughters, Mary Rosso, Newport News, Shirley Giles and her husband, Harry of Parrott, Janet Yarbrough, Bonify, Fla., Vesta Fortune and her husband, Jim, Valley Calif., Norma Stoots and her husband, Billy, Pulaski; seven grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Parrott Church of God with the Rev. W.O. Myers officiating. Interment with military rites will follow in Sifford Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Parrott Church of God. DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford is in charge of arrangements.

HARRIS, Faye Earles, of Radford, died Sunday, March 9, 1997 in a Radford hospital. Surviving are five sons, A.C. Earles, Steve Earles, Donald Harris, Charles Harris and Robert Harris all of Radford; one daughter, Sherry Harris Wolfe, Marion; two brothers, Gene Bond, Haverhill, Ohio and Carl Bond, Ironton, Ohio; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren also survive along with a special friend, Stella Maynard of Radford. A graveside servi ce will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, march 11, 1997 at Westview Cemetery with the Rev. Gina Rhea officiating. Surviving include his wife, Orpha Martin Largen; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Charles Patterson of Dugspur; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Shelley Largen of Dugspur; brother, Price Largen of Hillsville; grandchildren, Parker Patterson, Walter Patterson, Eric a Largen, and Thomas Michael Largen. PARRISH, Hope Pullen, 71, of Montvale, passed away Saturday, March 8, 1997. She was a resident of Friendship Manor. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Tonya L. and Todd Lampersberger of North Carolina, Dawn and Fred Karnes of Virginia; four grandchildren, Danielle and Heather Lampersberger, Brittany and Jake Karnes; two stepsons and daughter-in-law, Wayne Parrish , Don and Mary Parrish all of Roanoke; one sister, Ruth L. Sowers of West Va. A special thanks to Mary Eubank, Hazel Artrip, Billy Newcomb and Mr. and Mr s. Donald McLain. A memorial service will be held at Colonial Baptist Church in Blue Ridge 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 1997.

PHIPPS, Elsie H., 88, of Independence, passed away at her home on Saturday, March 8, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, G. Dewey Phipps, and oldest son, Harvey Louis Phipps. Mrs. Phipps was a member of Bridle Creek United Methodist Church. Some may best remember her as executive secretary of the Grayson County Draft Board, where she worked for 25 years until the Selective Service Office in Independence was discontinued. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy Norman and Bonnie Phipps of Colorado Springs, Colo., and George Dewey and Patricia Ann Phipps of Independence; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy P. and James E. Chase of Independence, and Alma Carole and Benjamin T. Wade of Roanoke; a daughter-in-law, Pauline R. Phipps of Greensboro, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 11, 1997, at 3 p.m., at Bridle Creek United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James Fain officiating. Interment will follow in the Isiah Phipps Family Cemetery in Independence. The body will remain at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, and will be taken to the church 30 minutes preceding the service to lie in state. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to Twin County Hospice, P.O. Box 70, Galax, Va. 24333, or the memorial fund of Bridle Creek United Methodist Church, Route 3, Independence, Va. 24348. POINDEXTER, Norine Gertrude Lynch, 89, of Rocky Mount, went home to be with her Heavenly father on Saturda y noon, March 8, 1997, from Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, Terry M. Poindexter. She is survived by her only child, Eleanor P. Woods, who so faithfully cared for her during her illness. She will be dearly missed by other family members, one son-in-law, John E. Woods of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren, John T. Woods of Rocky Mount, Edith W. Morgan (Rev. C. C. Morgan Jr.) of Roanoke and Roy B. Woods (Angela) of Fort Washington, Md.; five great-grandchildren, Chadwick and Corey Morgan, and Amber, Roderick and Autumn Woods, and four in-laws, Lillian Reese, Sarah Wingfield and Rachel Brown, all of Roanoke, and Walter Tyree of Rocky Mount, and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church, Patterson Avenue, Rocky Mount, Tuesday, March 11, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Samuel Anderson officiating. WHITLOCK, George Denton, 82, of Floyd, died at his home Sunday morning, March 9, 1997. Surviving are his wife, Mildred Wright Whitlock of Floyd; three daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and David Shank, and Debi and Joe Heines, all of Alexandria, and Sheila and Sheldon Goff of Check; nine grandchildren, Lorrie Goff, Wes and Amy Goff, Stacey and Jennifer Goff, Eric Shank, Jennifer Shank and John Shank, Aurora Heines and Joey Heines; three great-grandchildren, Tempry Goff and Jordan Goff, and James Shank; four sisters, Beatrice E. Whitlock and Bonnie M. Hylton, both of Floyd, Vera Collins of Roanoke and Elizabeth Eanes of Pilot, and three brothers, William L. Whitlock of Floyd, Gustavus A. Whitlock of Lynchburg and Ray A. Whitlock of Rocky Mount. He was preceded in death by a brother, Elions A. Whitlock. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church of Floyd, with the Rev. Fleet Powell officiating. WOOD, Stanley Edward, (``Babe""), 70, of Roanoke, died Sunday, March 9, 1997. Mr. Wood served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a retired construction worker. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Huff Wood, and is survived by a son, Larry Wood of Christiansburg; daughters, Diane Smith and Carol Weeks, both of Christiansburg, and Sandy Slusher of Hardy; eight grandchildren; brothers, Alfred Wood, Benny Wood and Walter Wood, all of Christiansburg, Henry Wood of Arkansas, Roy Wood of Flint, Mich., and Ervin Wood of Roanoke; sisters and brother-in-law, Lorene and David Owens of Salem and Shelby Conner of Christiansburg, and a special cousin, Jim Wood of Roanoke. A graveside service will be held in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens, Tuesday, March 11, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Scott McClain officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.

WOOLFOLK, James Albert, 66, of Vinton, passed away Saturday, March 8, 1997. Mr. Woolfolk was a longtime member and Deacon at Belmont Baptist Church, and was a former Minister of Music, serving at Bonsack Baptist, East End Baptist, Jefferson Street Baptist and Red Hill Baptist Churches. He was a retired chief clerk from Norfolk Southern Corporation, with 36 years of service. Surviving are his beloved wife of 47 years, Louise Cadd Woolfolk; his sons and daughters-in-love, Jimmy and Patsy Woolfolk, Steve and Donna Woolfolk and Paul Woolfolk, all of Vinton; his grandsons, Chris Woolfolk and his wife Melissa, Brad Woolfolk, Josh Woolfolk and Michael Wallace; his granddaughter, Chelsea Woolfolk; brothers, Claude Woolfolk and his wife Gatha of Vinton; sisters, Martha Hudson and her husband Richard of Tucson, Ariz., Mary Thompson and her husband Roy of Vinton, Jane Bailey and her husband Wayne of Moneta, Linda Crotty and her husband Gary of Chesterfield, and Sondra LaBrie and her husband Ricky of Vinton; aunts, Bernice Woolfolk of Elkhart, Ind., and Julia Metz of Roanoke, and several nieces and nephews.
