JENKINS MAKES MANY A POINT FOR 9TH-RANKED GENERALS IN 17-7 WIN

Ande Jenkins had a school-record 13 points as ninth-ranked Washington and Lee overpowered Greensboro 17-7 on Sunday in the championship game of the W&L Lacrosse Tournament in Lexington.

Jenkins had seven goals and six assists for the Generals (4-0). The senior attackman has amassed 24 goals and 10 assists. Tom Fallace added four goals and five assists Sunday for W&L, which went up 14-5 with a five-goal spurt.

Jeff Warnes led Greensboro (2-1) with three goals and Paul Goldstein had four assists.

In the consolation game, Cortland (N.Y.) State defeated Shenandoah 14-5.

In other lacrosse:

Roanoke: Andrew Barter made 21 saves, and Gettysburg took control in the second half to edge the Maroons 10-7 in Salem.

The Bullets (1-0) scored the first two goals of the second half to lead 7-5. Roanoke (1-1) responded with a goal by Justin Fitzgerald to cut their deficit to one, but Gettysburg pulled away by scoring the next three goals.

Joe Feldman led the Bullets with two goals and one assist, and Fitzgerald and Adam Jackson had two goals each for the Maroons.

Radford: Butler scored the first 11 goals and rolled to an 18-8 victory over the Highlanders in Radford.

Jerrod Burdsall, Pete Johnson and Cory Kahoun each had three goals for the Bulldogs (2-1), who are ranked 24th in the nation. Jimmy Polucha led Radford (1-1) with three goals.

VMI: Mark Duncan scored five goals to lead Lehigh to a 25-3 rout of the Keydets in Lexington.

The Engineers (1-0) outshot VMI 82-19. Rob Worrell (Rockbridge County) led the Keydets (0-3) with a goal and an assist.

BASEBALL

Monarchs rock Ferrum

Ferrum: Greensboro scored seven times in the third inning to break open a close game and went on to 14-3 victory over the Panthers in a Dixie Conference game in Ferrum.

Ryan Waelchli went the distance, holding Ferrum to six hits and three walks and striking out 10 for the Monarchs (2-2, 1-0). Brian Goodrich went 3-for-4 to lead the Panthers (9-2, 1-1).

VMI: Akron rallied for six runs in the top of the ninth to edge the Keydets 8-5 in the first game of a doubleheader in Lexington. The Zips (5-0) scored seven times in the eighth inning to win the nightcap 12-3. VMI is 4-13.

SOFTBALL

Radford wins a pair

Freshman Macy Price went 4-for-6 with a home run and five RBI to lead Radford to a pair of victories at the Chanticleer Classic in Conway, S.C.

Price had the homer and four RBI in the first game as the Highlanders edged Auburn 5-4. In the second game, Radford defeated North Carolina-Charlotte 5-2. Amy Hausman went 4-for-7 for the Highlanders (5-9).

BASKETBALL

Va. Western falls in title game

Forward Eric Brown scored 22 points on six 3-pointers as Thomas Nelson Community College edged Virginia Western 78-76 in the Virginia State Community College Championship game played at Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville.

The Blue Stars (10-6) fell behind early, but mounted a series of comebacks. They had a chance to win it, but were called for an offensive foul with eight seconds to play.

Brian Jackson scored 19 to lead Virginia Western, while Matt Woolwine and Chris Mattox had 13 apiece. Corey Willis added 11.

Thomas Nelson (21-0), based in Hampton, was led by Vince Bryson, who scored a game-high 26 points.

It was the Blue Stars fifth berth in the championship game. They had won in their previous four appearances.
