IN THE REGION ALL-AMERICA LIST INCLUDES MAROONS STAR

Roanoke College center Amy Athey is a finalist for the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association Kodak All-America team. Ten Kodak All-Americans will be named on March 20 from the field of 40 finalists.

Athey was the Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the year and averaged 17 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

A senior from Cave Spring High School, Athey was second on the team in blocked shots with 24 and second in steals with 41.

In its history, Roanoke has had six first-team All-Americans.

BASEBALL

Radford wins slugfest

The Highlanders outslugged Portland State 16-12. Third baseman Brian Elms had four hits and drove in five runs. Right fielder Matt Nowak added four RBI and Kelly Dampeer (Northside) had three hits. Radford (7-7) had a total of four home runs.

Ferrum: Todd Cunningham had a pair of hits, including a sixth inning grand slam, and six RBI to lead the Panthers to a 19-12 Dixie Conference victory over Greensboro. Patrick Muncher added four hits, including a three-run homer, and three RBI for the Panthers (10-2, 2-1).

Germaine Fletcher picked up his third victory of the season for Ferrum, scattering eight hits and striking out five.

Virginia Tech: The Hokies (3-8) open their home schedule at 3 p.m. today against Campbell. Earlier this season, Tech beat the Camels 6-5 in 13 innings. Campbell is coached by Chip Smith a former Tech player and assistant coach.

SOFTBALL

Highlanders split pair

Laura Jewett pitched five scoreless innings to help the Highlanders gain a split of a doubleheader with the College of Charleston. Radford won the second game of the twinbill 12-0 after dropping the opener 10-9. Jewett tallied two hits and a pair of RBI in the first game.

Roanoke: The Maroons, in their first season as a varsity program, dropped their opening two games in heartbreak fashion, losing 2-1 and 6-5 to Averett. The Cougars (5-3) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in both halves of the doubleheader played in Danville.

Marcee Hufton (William Byrd) took the loss in the first game despite pitching a five-hitter. Former Franklin County standout Dawn Webb went a combined 4-of-5 with three RBI and Kari Whitney (Cave Spring) knocked in two runs in the second contest for Roanoke.

LACROSSE

W&L moves up in poll

Roanoke College and Washington and Lee switched places in the Division III men's lacrosse poll. W&L (4-0) moved up to seventh while the Maroons (1-1) fell to ninth after a loss to Gettysburg (Pa.). Hampden-Sydney is No.16.

Virginia (1-2) fell from No. 3 to No. 5 in the Division I poll after losing to top-ranked Princeton 14-13.
