A 16-year-old resident of the Jamestown Place development in Roanoke was arrested Friday and charged with attempting to rob a 7-Eleven Food Store and a cab driver.
At 1:50 a.m., March 1, a man walked into the 7-Eleven on Bennington Street Southeast wearing a dark, hooded raincoat. He pointed a semiautomatic handgun at the clerk and demanded money. The robber was unable to get any money because the register would not open after the clerk hit the wrong key, Roanoke police said. The man left the store when two cars pulled into the parking lot.
At about the same time a man, also wearing a dark raincoat, tried to rob a Yellow Cab Co. driver who was talking on a pay phone in the parking lot next door to the 7-Eleven. The cab driver pushed the man and was able to get into his cab and drive away, as the would-be robber tried to open one of the cab's doors, police said.
The man was last seen running into the Jamestown Place Housing Development.
