CONNER, Arlie Belcher, 89, of Willis, passed away Monday, March 10, 1997 in a Martinsville hospital. Survivors include two daughters, Lovelene (Mrs. Coy) Hall, Ridgeway, Beatrice Dillon, Stuart; son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Peggy Belcher, Martinsville; two sisters, Aldine Craig, Wilis, Sybil Mize, Bassett; two brothers, Murken Harris, Willis, Richard Harris, Meadows of Dan; three stepdaughters, Irene Smith, Floyd, Loveda Belcher, Meadows of Dan, Shelby Harris, Stuart; special friend, Carl Asbury, Tazewell; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. DUNKLE, Cedola Smallwood, 82, of Bedford, passed away Monday, March 10, 1997 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born Mary 18, 1914 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Glen Jefferson Smallwood and Deborah Wright Smallwood. She was a member of t he Bedford Baptist Church. She is survived by seven sisters, Helen S. Radford, Marie S. Ewing, Frances S. Rumpf, Edith S. Witt, all of Bedford, Mildred S. Daniel, Hurt, Arlene S. Carter, Virginia Beach, Margaret S. Burnette, Waldorf, Md.; two brothers, V. E. Smallwood, Bedford, Berry C. Smallwood, Wheaton, Md. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 12, 1997, at 11 a.m. from Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Dr. Carl H. Douglass. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. ELLIS, Minnie Elizabeth Amos, 87, of Bedford County, passed away Sunday, March 9, 1997, in a Bedford nursing home. She was retired from Kenrose Manufacturing after 26 years o f service and was a member of The Nineveh Church, in Hardy. Minnie was preceded in death by parents, Lewis P. Amos Sr., and Bertha H. Amos; five brothers; four sisters; four sons; and two daughters. Surviving are her children, Ray Ellis and Calvin (``Bunk"") Ellis, both of Roanoke, Louise Robertson and husband Olen of Hardy, Marie Bobbitt and husband Aubrey of Moneta, Bill Ellis and wife Marie of Roanoke, Robert (``Buck"") Ellis and wife Gay of Montvale; one sister, Mary McGuire of Hardy; one brother, Junior Amos of Vinton; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Nineveh Church in Hardy, with the Rev. Clayton Leonard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. GALLAGHER, Mary Jane Equi, 71, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, March 10, 1997. She is survived by her husband, John A. Gallagher; three daughters, Tracy A. Morey and her husband, Craig L.Mo rey of Oakland Park, Kansas, Joan Austin Campbell and her husband, R. Pratt Campbell of Belmont, N.C., M. J. Finley Austin of Philadelphia, PA.; one son, Coley Austin and his wife, Jodi C. Austin of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Tiffany L. Huber and her husband, Oliver Huber of Charlotte, N.C., Katherine Campbell, Cole and Will Austin; brothers, Robert Equi and his wife, Mary Frances, Reading, PA, Francis Equi and his wife Clara of Roanoke; sister, Sissy McDaniel and her husband, Henry McDaniel, Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; and sister-in-law, Jean Equi, Roanoke. HARLESS, Edmond Richard, 82, of Parrott, died Sunday, March 9, 1997, at his home. He was a retired emp loyee of the N & W Railroad, and a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Hazel M. Harless, Parrott; three daughters, Betty H. Cox, Frances Hodge, and Lois Blevins, all of Radford; a son, Richard W. Harless, Radford; five stepdaughters, Mary Rosso, Newport News, Shirley Giles and her husband, Harry, of Parrott, Janet Yarbrough, Bonifay, Fla., Vesta Fortune and her husband, Jim, Valley, Calif., Norma Stoots and her husband, Billy, Pulaski; a brother, Robert I. Harless, Radford; three sisters, Ruth McPeak, Greenville, S.C., Christine Hoback, Radford, Melita Simpkins, Radford. Seven grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren also survive. HUNTER, William Thomson, 82, of Eagle Rock, died Monday, March 10, 1997. He was a retired agent-operator for the C & O Railway Company. He is survived by his wife, Sidney Yonce Hunter; two sons, W. Thomson Hunter Jr., Eagle Rock, Robert S. Hunter, Roanoke; and one sister, Pauline H. Garrett, Clifton Forge. A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. JARVIS, Donald Judson, 60, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, March 6, 1997. Funeral services will be Tuesday, 11 a.m., at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. Rev. Lee Lewis will officiate. JONES, Doris Lee, 78, of Vinton, passed away Monday, March 10, 1997. She was the widow of Aubrey F. Jones, and was retired from the Vinton Weaving Mill. She was a member of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church. Surviving are stepdaughters, Brenda J. Ward and husband, Barry L. Ward Sr., Roanoke, Faye J. Hughes, Johnson City, Tenn.; stepgrandchildren, Barry L. Ward Jr. and wife, Susan, Vinton, Amy T. Ward, Greeneville, Tenn.; brothers, Marshall Lee, Danville, Gordon Lee, Bassett; sister, Mrs. Agnes Jarrett, Bassett; a number of nieces and nephews. LINEBERRY, Emma Hodges, 78, of Salem, formerly of Hopewell passed away Monday, March 10, 1997. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a charter member of West Hampton Christian Church. She is survived by her husband, Dallas Hugh Lineberry; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Pastor Todd Maurer, State College, Penn.; grandson, Jeremy Maurer; also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 1997 at Lotz Salem Chapel with Rev. Paul D. Matheny officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. MASON, David French, 83, of 1351 Robinwood Road, Gastonia, N.C., died Monday, March 10, 1997, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia. He was born February 26, 1914, in Glade Spring. He was the son of the late James Porter Mason and Lillian Martin Mason. He graduated from Emory & Henry College in Emory with a chemistry degree. He worked as a research chemist, first for Calco Chemical Company, a division of American Cyanamid, in Damascus. Then, beginning in 1942, he worked for Southern Dyestuff (Sandoz) in Mount Holly, N.C., for over 40 years until he retired. Mr. Mason lived in Mount Holly from 1942 until 1994. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Holly, where he served as a Trustee, an Elder, and a Deacon. He was active in the Mount Holly R otary Club for 35 years. He was a charter member of the Carolina Piedmont Section of the American Chemical Society and served as Chairman for one year. He served as a trustee of Gaston College, and for many years he was active in the affairs of the Red Cross. Mr. Mason is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia Wright (``Doll'') Mason, of Gastonia. He also is survived by four children and three sons-in-law, Susan Wright Mason and Richard Roth of Anchorage, Alaska, Janet Mason and G. Edward Lee of Durham, N.C., David French Mason Jr. of Asheville, N.C., and Lucinda Mason and William Deese of Manassas, the parents of Mr. Mason's two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Will Mason-Deese. Mr. Mason's survivors also include four nephews, Bernard Mason, Douglas Mason, James Mason, and Charles Keister; and a niece, Lillian Keister Rexford. Mr. Mason was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Louisa Mason Keister Oglesby, Susan Mason Wildasin, Carolyn Mason, and Elinor Mason; two brothers, Douglas French Mason and William Bernard Mason; a half brother, James Bernard Mason; a half sister, Josephine Bowen Mason; two nephews, David Mason Wildasin and James Jones Wildasin. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Mount Holly on Wednesday, March 12, 1997, at 11 a.m., with the Reverend Randall Boggs and the Reverend Wilson P. Rhoton officiating. A service will be held at Glade Spring Presbyterian Church at Old Glade, in Glade Spring, on Thursday, March 13, 1997, at 3 p.m., followed by burial in Old Glade Cemetery, with the Reverend Timothy E. Bird officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to the Glade Spring Presbyterian Church at Old Glade, P.O. Box 336, Glade Spring, Va. 24340; to the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Holly, P.O. MOTTLEY, Everett Terrell, 87, of Salem, died Sunday, March 9, 1997. He was a native of Roanoke County for many years and was retired from construction business. He attended Oak Grove Assembly of God and was predeceased by his wife, Rowena Edith Mottley. He is survived by h is sons, Marvin Mottley and John Mottley, Roanoke; daughters, Edith Poole, Roanoke, Helen Mottley, Phoenix, Ariz.; brother, Vernon Mottley, Roanoke; sister, Marie Mottley, Roanoke; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 12, 1997 at 3 p.m. from the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem, with the Rev. Joe Burnside officiating. NELMS, Elizabeth Henry Davis, of Roanoke, died Sunday, March 9, 1997. She was the widow of Olin Walker Nelms, and was also preceded in death by her parents, William Henry and Mabel B. Davis, and her brothers, George Andrew Davis, Sr., William Spottswood Davis, Sr. She was retired from Lewis-Gale Hospital where she was a Supervisor and Associate Director of Nursing. Mrs. Nelms was a member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, and was also a member of ROKEVA. Surviving are her sisters and brothers-in-law, Veta B. and Curtis D. Woody, Roanoke, Rebecca M. and Clyde A. Jackson, Jr., Mebane, N. C., Florence A. and William M. Torrence, Rocky Mount, Mary Lucy and David L. Berry, Atlanta, Ga., Mildred E. and Brace Lee, Cumberland, Md., Mabel P. and Charles Douglas McCaughey, Port Charlotte, Fla., Gilly E. Cogswell, also of Port Charlotte, Fla.; many nieces and nephews. SHOWALTER, Donald Pryor, 75, of Salem, passed away Sunday, March 9, 1997, at the Salem Health & Rehab. Center. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and was a retired employee of General Electric. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Showalter. Survivors include one brother and wife, Bob and Barbara Showalter of Woodlawn; three sisters and husbands, Judith and Raleigh Sandy of Leesburg, Fla., Malinda and Dan Lareau of Warren, Pa., and June Showalter of Roanoke; one sister-in-law, Lina Showalter of Century, Fla.; niece, Beth Umberger of Christiansburg; several nieces and nephews. SMELSER, Etta Pauline, (``Pondy''), 78, of Wytheville, died Monday, March 10, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She is survived by her husband, C. E. ``Dick'' Smelser, Wytheville; a daughter, Odessa Quesenberry, Wytheville; three sons, Claudie Smelser, Cincinnati, Ohio, Riley Smelser, Boones Mill, Terry Smelser, Wytheville. Six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Wedne sday at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. Bob Peterson and Rev. Gerald Etter. SMITH, Frances Lee, 69, of Roanoke, passed away on Monday, March 10, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse, and the widow of Willie A. Smith Sr. Survivors include three sons, Willie A. (Mary) Smith Jr., Eric Thomas Smith of Roanoke, and Michael (Patricia) Smith, Toledo, Ohio; one daughter, Yvonne (Lylburn) Hairston, Hampton; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildre n; one sister, Clara Taylor, Roanoke; one aunt, Viola Martin Davis, Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Rooks, Brunswick, Ga. and Dollie Ferguson, New York, N.Y.; brothers-in-law, Milton Smith, Carroll Smith, Chester Ferguson, all of New York; special friends, Lorraine Walker and Marie Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. SMITH, Mary Turner, 63, of Roanoke, died Monday, March 10, 1997. She was retired from the Bell Atlantic Corporation. She was a volunteer in Readers For The Blind and she was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Surviving are her husband, Billy J. Smith; one daughter, Deborah F. Gilmo re, Bell Buckle, Tenn.; one son, William T. Smith, Roanoke; one sister, Violet Coulson, Lynchburg; two brothers, Buford Turner, Hillsville, Quinten Turner, Woodlawn; three grandchildren, Beth Gilmore, Anne Gilmore, both of Bell Buckle, Tenn., Tiffany Smith, Roanoke. SMYTHERS, Edna G. Stephenson, 85, of Wytheville, died Thursday, March 6, 1997, in Largo, Fla. She was a member of the Wytheville Pentecostal Holiness Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Smythers; and son, William D. Smythers. She is survived by two daughters, Martha C. Hoback of Riverside, Calif., Lyndel Finch of Pinellas Park, Fla.; one son, Michael L. Smythers of Rocklin, Calif. Six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral service will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the interment in the East End Cemetery.
