THESE SENIORS ARE (SORT OF) WALKING TO RUSSIA

"You're ready to face the day after you get done with this," says Doris Oliver, after starting her morning with an aerobic workout sponsored by the Christiansburg Senior Center.

Christiansburg, along with Radford and Blacksburg, offers programs to keep seniors in shape by exercising or walking. Pulaski is trying to organize a walking program for this spring.

In Christiansburg, the activity draws a gymful of seniors to the National Guard Armory every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

It keeps us toned up. It makes us feel good all day long," says Oliver. "We enjoy it, keeps us going."

Sherry Kostric, director of the senior center, said the seniors who participate have really good attitudes and enthusiasm.

"It keeps them ... not only physically fit, but mentally fit," she said. "They're more able to participate in other activities." In fact, several of the aerobics participants will also participate in the New River Valley Senior Olympics.

Christiansburg also offers a less-strenuous aerobics class, called Easy Motions, a weight-loss class and a walking club. Each year the walking club sets a goal to walk toward. This year's goal is Russia, at a distance of about 5,000 miles. The seniors will combine the miles they walk to meet the goal. Last year the walkers tallied 5,500 miles.

To learn more about joining an exercise program, seniors can call their local senior center. A doctor's approval may be required.
