BESS, Mildred Perkins, 72, of Roanoke, died Monday, March 10, 1997. Surviving are four children, Mildred Bess Robinson and Jimmy L. Bess, both of Roanoke, John P. Bess of Walker, Louisianna and Brenda B. Lee of Harrisonburg; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; five brothers, Paul Perkins, Dewey Perkins, Jackie Perkins, and Larry Perkins, all of Roanoke, Roy Perkin s of Idaho; three sisters, Margaret Bailey and Dorothy Crews, both of Roanoke, Marie Herzog, St. Louis, MO. BROWN, Mary Evans, of Salem, quietly slipped away Sunday night, March 9, 1997, at Richfield Nursing Home. He r intelligence, beauty, generosity and humor touched everyone and everything that was fortunate enough to cross her path. She gave selflessly to family, friends, and the community. We cannot fill the void left by her passing, but maybe we can follow her example in life. Mary was a charter member of Roanoke Chapter, The Links, Inc., a member of the Beta Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Women. She is survived by a cousin, Lenne S. Davis, Newport News; dear friends, Raymond and Parthena Joiner, William and Marzetta F. Sinkler, Salem; special friend at T. Stuart Payne Center, Joseph ``Joe'' Moss; and a host of other dear friends. A celebration of her life will be held at Hamlar-Curtis Chapel March 13, 1997, at 2 p.m. Friends may fellowship one (1) hour prior to the service. GLENDENING, Elizabeth Rapp, 76, of Indianapolis, Ind., formerly of Roanoke, Va. died Saturday, March 8, 1997, in St. Vincent Hospice. She was born in Roanoke on March 9, 1920, and was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Glendening. She was a Home Economics teacher in the Mariett a, Ohio Public Schools from 1953-1960. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis, Ind., Northminster Presbyterian Sewing Guild, and Home Economics Guild. She was a graduate of Longwood College, Farmville. Surviving are cousins, Margaret Cunningham and James S. Parsons. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 14, 1997, at 2 p.m. at Leppert & Hurt Mortuary, 740 E. 86th St., Indianapolis, Ind. HUFFMAN, Bobby N., 62, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997 at a local hospital. He was the son of the late Sidney T. and Gaynell B. Huffman. He is survived by his chosen family, T reva M. IKENBERRY, Elizabeth Flora, 81, of Boones Mill, died Monday, March 10, 1997, at her residence. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a life time member of Antioch Church of the Brethren. Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Julian L. Ikenberry; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Joyce Ikenberry, Roanoke; John & Rhonda Ikenberry, Boones Mill; one daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Steve Middleton, Boones Mill; grandsons, Jeffrey Middleton, Jeremy Middleton; granddaughters, Amy Ikenberry Olinger, Angela Marie Ikenberry; granddaughters and spouses, Krista and Fred Fuller, Dina and Christopher Almerini; great-grandson, Michael Allen Olinger; several nieces and nephews. LONG, Harvey Chester, 98, of Radford, passed away Saturday, March 8, 1997, at Heritage Hall Nursing Facility in Blacksburg. He was retired from Radford University, and was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia Likens Long; and a daughter, Marie L. Hall. Surviving are two daughters, Eva S. Long of Key Biscayne, Fla. and Alice L. Rickman of Phoenix, Ariz.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Wilbur and Barbara Long, Arthur and Ruth Long, all of Radford, Emmett and Diane Long of Fincastle, and William E. (Tommy) and Kris Long of Radford; one brother, Creed Long of Hinton, W.Va.; eleven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. POBLETT, George William, 30, of Roanoke, died suddenly Saturday, March 8, 1997. Mr. Poblett was born in Baltimore, Md. on December 25, 1966, and was a son of William John Poblett of Baltimore and Agnes Parks of Baltimore. George was an employee of the Wisneski Construction Co. of Roanoke. He is survived by one daughter, Ashley Poblett of Roanoke; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Christina Fox and husband, Robert, of Roanoke, Tonia Henderson and husband, David, of Roanoke. A private visitation was held at the Givens Funeral Home, Pearisburg on March 9, 1997. A private interment service will be held at a later date

SHUMATE, The Rev. Alfred Ritchie, 95, of Wytheville, died Sunday, March 9, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born on October 20, 1901 in Augusta County, and was educated at Roanoke College, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, and Harvard Chaplin School. He served the following churches: Holy Trinity, Mt. Hermon, St. Mark in Middlebrook Parish, St. Mathew, St. Peter, St. Stephen in Tom's Brook Parish, Holy Trinity, Lebanon, Holy Advent, St. Luke in Wytheville. He served as Chaplain in the Army Air Force with the 487th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force in England. He was preceded in death by one sister; three brothers, including his twin brother; and one grandson. He is survived by his wife, Ellen; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Jim Tucker; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Elizabeth, Robert and Mildred; a sister, Mrs. Phyllis Cupp; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be Saturday, March 15, 1997, at 11 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, with the interment Saturday, March 15, 1997, at 3:30 p.m. in the Thorn Rose Cemetery, Staunton. Friends may visit the family on Friday, March 14, 1997, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the parlor of Lutheran Hall in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Wytheville. SMITH, Frances Lee, 69, of Roanoke, passed away on Monday, March 10, 1997, in a Roanok e hospital. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse, and the widow of Willie A. Smith Sr. Survivors include three sons, Willie A. (Mary) Smith Jr. and Eric Thomas Smith of Roanoke and Michael (Patricia) Smith, Toledo, Ohio; one daughter, Yvonne (Lylburn) Hairston of Hampton; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Clara Taylor of Roanoke; one aunt, Viola Martin Davis of Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Rooks of Brunswick, Ga., and Dollie Ferguson of New York, N.Y.; brothers-in-law, Milton Smith, Carroll Smith and Chester Ferguson, all of New York; special friends, Lorraine Walker and Marie Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends. SMITH, Jettie Reid, 90, of Lexington, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997, in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center, Buena Vista. Miss Smith was born April 24, 1906 in Rockbridge County, and was a daughter of the late Charles Thomas Smith and Mary Virginia Hostetter Smith. She was a member of the Lauderdale A.R.P. Ch urch, Lexington. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Daniel, Raymond, and Russell Smith. Miss Smith is survived by five sisters, Edna Brown, Bessie Sligh, June Brown, Pearl Goodbar, all of Lexington, and Louise Toroian, Altoona, Pa. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 14, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Rev. TAYLOR, Mary Seymour, of Berlin, Md., and formerly of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, March 8, 1997. She was a retired Deputy Clerk for the Clerk of Courts for the City of Roanoke. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret T. and Robert E. Vest, Berlin, Md.; three grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Vest, Finwick, Del., Richard Kevin Vest and his wife, Nesha, David T. Vest and his wife, Dee; and a great-granddaughter, Helen Taylor Vest, all of Richmond. YEATTS, Glenna Altizer, 99, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997, in a Blacksburg nursing home. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Laddie Phillips, Christiansburg, Neoma and Alvis Altizer, Radford; three granddaughters, Sandra Phillips, England, Rhonda Wagonbrenner and Kimberly Altizer, Christiansburg; a granddaughter and her husband, Denise and Reid Lee; a grandson and his wife, Joseph and Mary Ellen Phillips; three great-grandsons, Michael Lee Phillips, Matthew Lee, and Russell James Phillips; one great-granddaughter, Melissa Lee. She was preceded in death by a special granddaughter, Melissa Elaine Altizer.
