THINGS TO DO

Tapping your roots

The new six-story Library of Virginia in Richmond is probably the most comprehensive place in the state to help you add new leaves to your family tree. Learn what the library has to offer at ``In the Footsteps of Virginians: Resources for Family Historians'' on Sunday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in Hopkins Planetarium of the Science Museum of Western Virginia in Center in the Square, Roanoke. Local and Library of Virginia staff members will give you an idea of what's available to help your search.

Spinning Yarns - No Wheels

Got a tale to tell? Most kids have made up some good ones, sometimes to save their hides. Now, they can win a prize by entering the Student Tellers Competition, part of the Third Annual Blue Ridge Storytelling Festival on April 19 at The Brambleton Center in Roanoke.

Anyone in grades three to 12 can enter one of the three age divisions. To register, call 362-5338.

Wearin' o' the green

This St. Patrick's Day, you can either stand still or make a run for it.

Plant your feet, or your seat, along Jefferson Street or Campbell Avenue on Saturday around 3 p.m. and watch the much-bigger-than-ever St. Patrick's Day parade. This year's event has seven bands, including the VIrginia Highland Pipe and Drum Corps, marching units, a West Virginia fife and drum group, clowns, floats and Irish-proud marchers.

The parade starts at Albemarle Avenue and Jefferson Street, heads to Campbell and ends on the City Market.

Before your feet start tapping to the sound of the marching bands, try your luck in the Shamrock Hill distance run, starting at 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Valley Nursing Home. The one-mile fun run and 5K run start at 8:30 and 9 a.m., respectively, on a ``flat and fast'' course. Prizes and awards will be given. If you register today, the fee is $12; if not, it's $15 and you can sign up until 45 minutes before the starting gun.

Call 982-3532 if you need more details.

Get it in writing

Hollins 37th annual Literary Festival happens Saturday with readings by writers, book signings, a panel discussion and literary prizes. Kathy Acker, writer-in-residence and author of ``Empire of the Senseless,'' will read from her work.

Register begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Green Drawing Room in Main Building. Readings and presentations will be in Babcock Auditorium in Dana Science Building, both on the Hollins College campus.

Questions? Call 362-6451.
