PLACES TO GO

Rockin' Reverend at Roanoke College

Probably the most irreverent reverend you'll ever hear, Rev. Billy C. Wirtz, will tickle the ivories and funny bones Friday at 9 p.m. at Roanoke College.

Check out this six-foot-five-inch tattooed whirlwind in the Cavern in Sutton Student Center. Tickets are $5. Got a question? Call 375-2306.

Buy art, help others

Treat yourself to a piece of art while helping others who need special medical care at the Art Benefit auction Saturday at Virginia Tech's Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center.

More than 100 area artists' paintings, sculpture, jewelry, dolls, baskets, stained glass and other works will go on the block.

Viewing of the items, artists' reception and silent auction begin at 6 p.m. Live bidding starts at 7:30 p.m.

The Free Clinic of the New River Valley's program provides medical and dental care for residents who would otherwise go without it.

Tickets are $8 per person or $15 per couple. For more info, call 381-2689.

Murder by the books

You don't need a DNA testing kit or Sherlock Holmes' magnifying glass to solve the Fourth Annual Murder Mystery Drama, ``Shattered Dreams,'' on Friday at 7 p.m. at Roanoke County Headquarters Library.

The benefit for the library system includes gourmet desserts and coffee during an intermission break. Prizes will be awarded to the three sleuths who solve the case.

Tickets, priced at $12, are on sale at all county library branches. Need more details? Call 772-7507 or 362-7322.

Courthouse battle remembered

Historians have called it ``the bloodiest gun battle to take place in a U.S. Court'' and composer Tom Harvey wrote a musical about it. It happened in the Carroll County Courthouse in Hillsville 85 years ago and Harvey will sing about it Friday at 7:30 p.m. during a memorial program.

Harvey recently submitted ``Summer in Virginia,'' which he will perform, for consideration as a new state song.

The event takes place at the scene of the crime. For more clues, call (540) 729-3189.

Harvey will also be appearing Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Threefeathers Bookstore on Grandin Road, Roanoke.
