DRUG BUST NETS 24 ARRESTS

Grayson and Carroll county officials investigated alleged cocaine traffickers, resulting in 45 indictments.

Twenty-four people face 45 drug-related indictments after a six-month investigation by law enforcement agencies in Carroll and Grayson counties.

The indictments were returned against residents of Grayson, Carroll and Floyd counties and the city of Galax in Virginia, and Surry County, N.C., according to a joint statement Wednesday from Carroll County Sheriff Warren Manning and Grayson County Sheriff Jerry Wilson.

They said the investigation targeted cocaine distributors, including some major suppliers in the Twin County area.

Investigators from both offices and the Virginia State Police said the drugs include marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, amphetamines, LSD and Royphynol (commonly known as the "date rape" pill). Amounts varied from buys of an eighth of an ounce of cocaine to 100 doses of LSD.

The probe was coordinated by Chief Investigator Glen Hyatt and Investigator Pete Billings of the Grayson County Sheriff's Office, Special Agent J.B. Williams of the Virginia State Police, 1st Sgt. Rick Clark of the Virginia State Police and Sgt. J.B. Gardner of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. It was funded by money seized from convicted drug dealers in Carroll and Grayson counties, and with funds from the state police.

Wilson and Manning said they expect additional charges to be placed. Investigators in Carroll County are still working with state police to identify other drug suppliers.
