A week after the Jan. 30 robbery, police reported that a nearby home had been burglarized the same day.
Authorities arrested a man in the burglary of a Richmond residence that occurred shortly after two robbers sprayed a bank with bullets, killing a teller and wounding two other employees and a customer.
Lafawn Dwayne Bobbitt, 20, of Richmond was charged Tuesday night with burglarizing a home directly behind the NationsBank branch that was robbed Jan. 30, said Jim Comey, chief of the Richmond Criminal Division in the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Police believe the two thefts are connected, Comey said.
No charges have been filed against Bobbitt in the bank robbery. U.S. Attorney Helen Fahey said in a news release that federal charges concerning the bank robbery are expected.
Another man, Jermaine Jerrell Sims, 21, was arrested Feb. 12 and charged in the bank robbery. Sims is being held without bond.
Bobbitt was arrested on a downtown Richmond street by Richmond police and FBI agents who recognized him, Comey said. He is being held without bond.
Two robbers opened fire with military-style guns Jan. 30 as they burst into the bank. They exchanged gunfire with the bank's security guard and two policemen, then escaped by running through Richmond National Cemetery.
A week later, police reported that a home behind the bank had been burglarized the same day.
The residents discovered a checkbook missing, along with some clothing and jewelry. Left behind in the break-in were two backpacks, a coat and a hiking boot.
Bobbitt's preliminary hearing is set for May 1.
