TECH ROUTS JMU IN BASEBALL

Virginia Tech used a seven-run fourth inning to take control and went on to a 17-5 victory over James Madison on Wednesday in a college baseball game in Harrisonburg.

Right fielder Matt Griswold led the Hokies with two home runs - a three-run shot in the fourth and a solo blast in the seventh - and five RBI. Ryan Brittle, a transfer from Ferrum, went 4-for-6 with four RBI.

Freshman Brendan McCullers, making his first collegiate start, pitched seven innings to pick up the victory for Tech (4-9). He surrendered seven hits and four runs, all unearned.

James Madison is 9-7.

Radford: Erik Mattern homered twice and drove in three runs as 21st-ranked Arizona (21-10) outslugged the Highlanders 13-9 in Tucson, Ariz. Second baseman Kelly Dampeer had three hits and drove in three runs for Radford (7-10).

VMI: Old Dominion (14-4-1) scored in every inning except the seventh as the Monarchs pounded the Keydets 19-7 in Lexington. Scott Thompkins hit a pair of home runs and drove in three runs for VMI (4-15).

Washington and Lee: Peyton Martin and Bo Frimmer drove in two runs apiece as Lynchburg (5-7, 1-0 ODAC) stopped the Generals' four-game winning streak with a 10-4 win in Lynchburg. Christian Batcheller and E.J. Murphy each drove in run for W&L (4-6, 1-1).

SOFTBALL

Tech sweeps Liberty

Virginia Tech rode the strong pitching of Michelle Johnson and Allison Weist to a doubleheader sweep of Liberty (4-4) in Lynchburg.

Johnson pitched a six-hitter to lead the Hokies to a 2-1 triumph in the first game. Weist then followed with a three-hit shutout in the second game, a 4-0 Tech victory. Christine Trunnell had three hits and knocked in three runs in the sweep for the Hokies (8-4-1).

LACROSSE

Stony Brook downs Radford

Chris Kollmer scored three goals and four other Stony Brook players netted two as the Seawolves (2-0) whipped Radford in Stony Brook, N.Y. Bay Burch and Brooke Weedon had two goals and an assist for the Highlanders (1-2).
