NORFOLK SOUTHERN, CSX DISCUSS DIVIDING W.VA. CONRAIL ROUTES

CSX has 3,000 miles of track and NS has 588 miles of track in West Virginia.

CSX Corp. and Norfolk Southern Corp. have begin discussing how to split up Conrail Inc.'s routes in West Virginia now that Conrail has approved a takeover by both companies.

Each bidder is likely to get half of Conrail's 11,000 miles of track across the Northeast and Midwest, said Norfolk Southern spokesman Bob Fort, adding that both sides were carefully examining route maps.

CSX operates more than 18,000 miles of track, including about 3,000 miles in West Virginia. It employs about 3,000 state residents.

Norfolk Southern operates a 14,500-mile rail system in 20 states and Canada, as well as a trucking company. It has 588 miles of rail and about 1,250 employees in West Virginia.

It was unclear how the companies would split Conrail's 300 miles of rail in West Virginia, or what would happen in areas where both CSX and Conrail operate.
