ALIFF, Nellie Irene, 93, of Pembroke, departed her home to be with her Lord in her Heavenly home in the morning of Wednesday, March 12, 1997, after a long illness. Nellie was born on February 14, 1904 in Pembroke, a daughter of the late John Henry and Ollie Belle Jones Merrix. She was a member of the Pembroke Church of God, and retired from the Hoechst-Celanese Plant. She was preceded in death by her husband, Una Vesta Aliff; five sisters, Birdie Stevers, Frances Meredith, Lena Tawney, Phoeby Shaver, and Pauline Wilburn; and five brothers, Edd Merrix, Emmitt Merrix, Kendill Merrix, George Merrix, and Junior Merrix. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, who lovingly cared for her during her illness, Edith and John Lewis Williams of Pembroke; two grandchildren, Terri Williams and John Christopher Williams and wife, Robin Pennington Williams; a great grandson, Brandon Christopher Williams; four brothers, Jim Merrix at the home, Emory Merrix of Princeton, W.Va., Tyler Merrix of Pearisburg, Roy Merrix of Dublin; a sister, Nannie Sue Merrix of Martinsville. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 14, 1997, at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke with the Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial will be in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg.

BALDWIN, Geneva S., 73, of Bedford, departed this life Tuesday, March 11, 1997, in Bedford County Nursing Home. She is survived by one godson, James Creasey of Bedford; one goddaughter, Mary Burton of Bedford; one brother, Willie Staples of Lynchburg; one sister, Mrs. Elsie Coles of Alexandria; one aunt, Mrs. Clara Brown, Montclair, N.J.; one brother-in-law, Buford Starks of Bedford; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral servic es will be held Monday, March 17, 1997, at 1 p.m. at the Court Street Methodist Church, Bedford. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to the service. BISHOP, Carl Stanley Sr., 78, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997, in a Princeton, W.Va. hospital. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday from the Richardson-Horne Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Homer D. Sawyer and Rev. Lawrence Broughman. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery. CARR, Elizabeth Snead, (``Ebbie""), 77, of Vinton, passed away Thursday, March 13, 1997. She was a member of Vinton Baptist Church and the Golden Circle Sunday School Class. She was predeceased by her husband, James W. Carr. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Brenda Carr of Roanoke, and Paul and Linda Carr, and Denny and Helen Carr, all of Vinton; eight grandchildren; eight grandchildren; sisters, Nellie Altice of Roanoke, Mary Connor of Bluefield, Va., and Hazel Hammock and Jean Chocklett, both of Vinton; a brother and sister-in-law, Tommy Sr. and Catherine Snead of Vinton, and many nieces and nephews. HARRIS, Leonard Rosella, 96, of Roanoke, p ased away Wednesday, March 12, 1997 in the Friendship Manor Nursing Home. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Oakley K. Harris. He was a self-employed carpenter and was a charter member of the Melrose Ave. Seventh Day Adventist Church. He is survived by five daughters, Evelyn H. Stewart, Geraldine English, Pauline Kasey, Alverta Steptoe and Mary Board, all of Roanoke; four sons, Lewis T. Harris, Lawrence Pinkard, Samuel Pinkard and James Claytor, all of Roanoke; two sisters, Minnie Irby, Hurt and Oakley Roach, Gretna; one brother, Jack Harris, Hampton; his beloved grandchildren, Donald S. Stewart, Sherwin L. Stewart, Valerie G. Stewart, George S. Henderson, Beverly H. Davis and Kimberly H. Black; and a host of other grands, great-grands, nieces and nephews. HICKS, Leona Ruth, 67, of Salem, passed away Thursday, March 13, 1997. She was a lifetime area resident and retired from Lewis Gale Hospital as a Dietician and attended Bethal Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Claude E. Hicks; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth L. and Becky Arthur, Blue Ridge, Timmy R. and Cindy Arthur, Vinton, Algie L. and Becky Arthur, Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Linda A. and Charlie E. HOLDREN, Joy Edward, 69, of Vinton, died Wednesday, March 12, 1997. He was retired from General Electric and served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by a son, Edward Lee Holdren; a granddaughter, Amber Marie Boitnott; his parents, Henry and Minnie Holdren; and brother, Henry E. Holdren Jr. Survivors include his wife, Rosie Campbell Holdren; one son, Henry E. Holdren of Washington D.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lawanda and Roger Lineberry of Vinton, Debra and Paul Honaker of Vinton; two grandchildren, Chrystal Boitnott and April Lineberry; two brothers, Walter Jospeh Holdren, Warren Wayne Holdren, both of Roanoke; two sisters, Rochelle Holdren of Blue Ridge, Patricia Holdren Jackson of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a number of nieces and nephews. KLEMAS, Muriel H., 83, of Roanoke, died Thursday, March 13, 1997. She was a member of the League of Roanoke Artists. Mrs. Klemas was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of B. P. O. Elks and the ROKEVA Womens Club. Surviving are her husband, Richard E. (Dick) Klemas; two sons, Gary H. Klemas, Gulf Breeze, Fla. and Jeffrey H. Klemas, Roanoke; one brother, Armand Harper, New Orleans; two granddaughters, Deborah and Marcella Klemas, both of Fla. LAPRAD, Woodrow Wilson, 83, of Eden, N.C., died Wednesday, March 12, 1997, in Morehead Memorial Hospital. He was born January 25, 1914 in Salem, Va. He attended Merriman Street Wesleyan Church, Eden, N.C., and was a retired electrician for Fieldcrest Mill s. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Lois Laprad of Eden, N.C.; three sons, Jack Laprad of Eden, N.C., Leon Laprad of Rock Hill, S.C., Woody Laprad of Eden, N.C.; three daughters, Norma Dalton of Ridgeway, Va., Sally Johnson of Eden, N.C., and Faye Locke of San Marcos, Texas; eight sisters, Ella Blackwell, Annie Weadon, Sally Stultz, all of Eden, N.C., Caroline Burnop, Daley Altice, Mable Conner, Mary Lou Lawrence, all of Salem, Va., and Susie Hall of Eden, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. LINKOUS, Russell E., 80, of Christiansburg, went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 13, 1997, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born in Montgomery County on May 29, 1916, to the late Guy E. and Carrie Thompson Linkous. Mr. Linkous was a well-known building contractor in Montgomery County for over 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Christine C. Linkous of Christiansburg; three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Earl Beatty, Franklin Springs, Ga., Carol and Sid Bishop, Kill Devil Hills, N.C., Sheryl and Jay Burk, Shawsville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Mary Linkous, Lawrenceville, Ga., Russell Jr. and Clara Linkous, Germantown, Tenn., Don and Carol Linkous, Blacksburg; two sisters, Edna Linkous and Millie Gay Martin, both of Blacksburg; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a special brother-in-law and his wife, Dr. Carl and Mildred Collins, Daleville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Linkous' pallbearers will be six of his grandsons, Bill Beatty, Bobby Linkous Jr., Russell Linkous III, Jamie Linkous, Todd Miller, and Jeff Miller. MANNING, Kevin Emerson, 31, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, March 12, 1997. He was predeceased by his father, James Emerson Manning. Surviving are his mother, Mary Widener Manning; two sisters, Tonja Bare , Bedford, Tammie McDaniel, Roanoke; four brothers, Kenneth Widener, Salem, William Wyatt, Eagle Rock; Bryan Manning, Franklin County, Craig Manning, Roanoke; and numerous nieces and nephews. MAXEY, Dennis Daniel, 63, of 601 Broadway Street, Princeton, W.Va., died Thursday, March 13, 1997, at his residence following a short illness. Born September 5, 1933 at Narrows, Va., he was the son of the late Calvin Lee and Virgie Lake Maxey. He had served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of Narrows High School, received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Concord College in Athens, and a Masters Degree in Education from Marshall University in Huntington. Mr. Maxey had taught school for many years in Mercer County, retiring in 1977 from Matoaka High School. After his retirement in education, he began a construction company in the area, building many homes and buildings. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Ray Maxey. Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Lankford and her husband, Dasil, of Princeton; three sons, Richard Maxey and his wife, Betty, Ronald Maxey, Edwin Maxey, all of Princeton; two sisters, Pauline Covil of Narrows, Va., Clara Smith of Salem, Va.; four brothers, Robert Maxey of Newport News, Va., Harold and Sherman Maxey, both of Narrows, Va., Roger Maxey of Miami, Fla.; seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 1997, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Reverend Carl Pettrey officiating. MOOREFIELD, Warner Herald, 79, of 5517 Darby Road, Roanoke, died Wednesday, March 12, 1997, at his residence. He was born July 22, 1917 in Pittsylvania County, son of the late Charles Edgar Moorefield and Lelia Hodnett Moorefiel d. Mr. Moorefield had spent 30 years in Atlanta before moving to Roanoke four years ago. He was a sales person for ACE Hardware Store prior to retirement. He was a member of Community Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Florence Hawkins in 1985; and by a son, Dale Moorefield. Surviving are his wife, Helen Hagood Moorefield, Roanoke, stepdaughter, Julia Richardson, Woodbridge; stepson, Keith M. Dodson, Vinton; sister, Lois M. Booth, Danville; brother, Stanley Moorefield, Keeling; four stepgrandchildren. MUSSELMAN, Rev. Charles Minor, 89, of Roanoke, went on to meet his Lord on Wednesday, March 12, 1997 at Woodbridge, Va. He was born July 29, 1907, a son of the late Thomas Grant and Olia Gordon Musselman. He was a retired minister in the Pentecostal Church having served approximately 50 years. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Elene Kincer, Beckley, W. Va., Dorothy Shoupe, Roanoke; a son, Dorman Musselman, Roanoke; surviving are his wife, with whom he would have celebrated his 70th Wedding Anniversary on May 2, Fleta Mae Stewardson Musselman; two sons, Charles M. Musselman, Jr., Roanoke and T. Thomas Musselman, Woodbridge; 3 brothers, Carlos Musselman and Bernice Musselman, both of Roanoke, Rev. Forrest Musselman, Covington; two sisters, Ezell Gillespie and Macy Matthews, both of Roanoke; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild. NAFF, Jennie Horne, 75, formerly of 4009 Cove Road, passed away Thursday, March 13, 1997, in a local convalescent center. Known as a kind and generous spirit, she touched the lives of many with the talents of her hairdressing skills. Surviving are her husband, John W. Naff; son, Jerry Alan Naff of Lithonia, Ga.; grandchildren, Garret t E. Naff, Chris W. Naff and Andrew T. Naff; a sister, Cleo M. Thompson of Salem, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 1997, from Oakey's North Chapel. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. PAINTER, Leo Erman, 81, of Roanoke County, died Thursday, March 13, 1997 at the Veterans Medical Center, Salem. He was born in Catawba, Roanoke County and was the son of the late, Clarence and Eva Smith Painter. Later he graduated from Salem High School and attended V.P.I. as a special student. He reti red from the U. S. Department of Agriculture as a Conservationist with the Soil Conversation Service with 39 years of service. After his retirement, he served as a Director and Chairman of the Blue Ridge Soil & Water Conservation District and was on the committee and chairman of the Agriculture and Stabilization Board. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the Air Force in the Pacific Theatre in the 43rd and the 380th Bomb Groups. Mr. Painter retired from the Air Force Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel of the 9480th Squadron in Roanoke. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Inez Woodahl Painter; a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne Painter Moore and Larry D. Moore; a beloved granddaughter, Erica Anne Moore; all of Roanoke; a sister, Lucille Painter Little, Salem; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Correlle W. Venable, Berkeley H. Riley and Evelyn W. Riley, Roanoke, Lester G. and Sue Woodahl, Shawsville; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 1997 from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. George M. POWERS, Hubert Norman, 80, of Vinton, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 1997. He was retired from the N & W Railroad, and was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert W. and Mattie Powers; brothers, Roy C. Powers and Harry W. Powers; sister, Lillian Hawkins. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Leah Chisom Powers; son, H. Wayne Powers of Goodview; daughters, Nancy P. Henderson and husband, David, of Roanoke, Lois P. Rowland and fiance, Danny Morgan, of Roanoke, Linda P. ROGERS, Lucy Paige, 90, of Pulaski, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997, in P ulaski Community Hospital after a short illness. She was born May 7, 1906, at Bent Mountain, the daughter of the late Otho and Nancy Paige. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Rogers. She was a member of Randolph Avenue United Methodist Church. Her survivors are one son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Iva Rogers of Pulaski; two grandchildren, Robert Guy Rogers and Carla Sioux Rogers of Pulaski; one brother, Otis Paige of Roanoke; three sisters, Jenny Whorley and Fannie Webb, both of Roanoke, and Alice Claxton of Salem; sisters-in-law, Moe Paige of Newark, N.J., Nannie Brown of Pulaski and Virginia Spiva of Johnson City, Tenn.; a special niece, Claudine and husband Ray Stewart of Floyd, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Randolph Avenue United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donald Swift officiating. Burial will be in Pinehurst Cemetery, Pulaski. ROMANO, Domenic, 99, of Westwood Health Care Center, Bluefield, Va., and formerly of Grandview Avenue, Bluefield, W.Va., died Tuesday, March 11, 1997, in the Westwood Health Care Center. Born November 28, 1897 in Locri, Italy, he was a son of the late Joseph and Judith Arteritano Romano. He came to America in 1913 and was a resident of Bluefield for 65 years. He and his two brothers, Patsy and Jim Romano, were in the construction business for many years, building roads in Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia, and opening many mines. Patsy Small & Company, as their company was known, became Romano Brothers Construction Company. He later had his own company, Mercer Construction Company. He was as veteran of World War I, having served with the A.E.F. in the Meuse-Argonne offensive. He volunteered for service, having little knowledge of the English language. In 1988 he was awarded a certificate from the French Government, in recognition of his services in World War I. Out of love for his adopted land, he made a substantial gift to the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Rehabilitation Fund. He was a for mer member of the Chamber of Commerce, the V.F.W., American Legion, Riley-Vest Post #9, and the Sacred Hearth Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Carrie Banks Romano; a son, Joseph Romano; three brothers; and two sisters. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are daughters, Velma Kathleen Cox and husband, George, of Lewes Del., Alena Caldwell of Bluefield, W.Va., and Mimi Spry of Bluefield, W.Va.; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Romano of Princeton, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews in the United States, Italy and Australia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said Friday, March 14, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Patsy J. Iaquinta, V.F., as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Princeton, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Sandy River District Post #175 and the Mercer County Veterans Council. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Mark Caldwell, Barry Spry, Gary Spry, Greg Spry; nephews, Joe Romano, Pat Romano, Frank Romano; and son-in-law, George Cox. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the American Legion, Riley Vest-Post #9. The family may be reached at the home of Alena Caldwell or Mimi Spry. SAUNDERS, Roy Lee, 69, of Route 2, Bland, died Wednesday, March 12, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born in Gile s County, the son of the late Roy Lee and Myrtle French Saunders, and was preceded in death by a brother, Riley Saunders. He is survived by his wife, Alice C. Saunders of Crandon; a daughter and son-in-law, Belinda and Isaac Hockett of Bland; two sons and daughters-in-law, Royce and Kelley Saunders of Floyd County, Dean and Linda Saunders of Bedford; a brother, Monroe Saunders of Giles County. Four grandchildren and eight stepgrandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 14, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the Church of God in Bastian with the Rev. Sylvia Hill officiating. Interment will follow in the Rose Lawn Cemetery in Princeton, W.Va. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Bland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 75, Bastian, Va. 24314. Newberry Funeral Home in Bland is in charge of the arrangements.

SHAVER, Alfred, (``Al""), 70, of Vinton, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, March 12, 1997, in a local hosptial. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired employee of US Air. He was a life member of the D.A.V. and V.F.W. and a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Bernice B. Shaver; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Matt Whitcomb, Vinton, Mary Lee and Danny Meador, Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Billy Lee and Stacy Shaver, Wilmington, Ohio; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be at Oakey's Vinton Chapel 12 noon Saturday with Pastor Jerry M. Gray officiating. Interment with full military honors at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. SMITH, Joseph William, (``Cricket""), 34, of Riner, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997. He was born June 23, 1962, in Radford. He was educated at Riner Elementary School and Auburn High School, where he excelled highly in the athletic program. He achieved several awards and honors, especially in football. On April 8, 1966, Joe received Christian baptism at Mount Airy United Methodist Church in Riner. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was an employee of Radford Amry Ammunition Plant, which is now Alliant Tech Inc., for 151/2 years. He also was a dedicated member of the New River Valley Progressive Men's Club. His survivors include his loving wife, Kesha J. Smith; two daughters, Lesleigh N. and Kelleigh M. Smith of Riner; his mother and stepfather, Alicia and William Black of Riner; his father, William Smith of Christiansburg; twin brothers, Raymond S. and Waymon L. Smith; a half brother, Cedric E. Black; his maternal grandparents, Homer and Angie Pack; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Keith and Carol Johnson; his mother-in-law, Janet Johnson, and her mother, Vivian Porter; two uncles and aunts, Joseph and Mae Pack of Riner, and Leslie and Sandra Pack of Radford; four nephews, Keith and Cameron Johnson, Joshua Smith and Tevin Black; one niece, Heaven Black, and special cousins, Kim Winston, Erie and Linda Pack, and Anthony Pack. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Randolph Avenue United Methodist Church in Pulaski, with the Rev. Donald Swift officiating. The eulogy will be delivered by the Rev. Angela Hardy. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 Friday evening at Mount Airy United Methodist Church in Riner. Burial will be in the Mount Airy Church Cemetery, Riner. WALTERS, John Carroll, 95, of Rural Retreat, died early Thursday morning, March 13, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Rural Retreat on August 20, 1901, and is survived by his wife, Louise Brown Walters of the home; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Greever B rown of Rural Retreat, Virginia Brown Pearce of Cockeysville, Md. Many loving nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 1997, at the Lindsey Funeral Home with Pastor Edward R. Schaack officiating. Interment will follow in the Black Lick Cemetery in Rural Retreat.
