WOMAN IN CRITICAL CONDITION AFTER 3-VEHICLE CRASH ON I-81

A three-vehicle accident on Interstate 81 Friday afternoon left a woman pinned under the rear axle of a tractor-trailer.

Randy Laden Osborne, 37, of Grundy was driving north on I-81 near the Ironto exit with Kimberly Suzanne Boyd, 26, of Haysi, about 2:55 p.m., when he lost control of his car in a hard rain. Osborne's car spun around and struck in the side a pickup driven by Pamela A. Kinney, 30, of State College, Pa. Kinney was able to pull the truck to the side of the road, and Osborne's car came to rest perpendicular to the road, up against the left lane guardrail, Virginia State Police Trooper S.K. Caudell said.

Osborne and Boyd saw a tractor-trailer approaching and tried to get out of the car. The semi, driven by Jeffrey M. Leibach, 37, of Danville, Ill., could not avoid the car and struck it on the right side. Boyd had already opened the passenger door, which was then peeled back by the impact, throwing her under the truck's rear axle, Caudell said.

Boyd was the only one who suffered serious injuries in the accident. She was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where she was listed in critical condition in the neurotrauma unit, a hospital resource person said.

Osborne was charged with failing to maintain control, Caudell said.
