It isn't clear how the boy ended up in the river after police pulled over the car he may have been driving.
A 16-year-old motorist apparently drowned early Saturday in the Appomattox River after police stopped a vehicle that swerved into the path of a squad car.
The body of Eric Nathaniel Parham of Hopewell was found early Saturday in 10 feet of water near the Hopewell Bridge, fire officials said.
A Chesterfield County police officer turned around and stopped a car that swerved into his path about 5 a.m. Saturday, police Sgt. James Nowlin said. A 14-year-old fled but was caught by the officer.
Police heard someone yell for help from the river after stopping a second car they suspected was following the first one. Additional officers and a tracking dog were called to the scene.
Nowlin said police believe the 14-year-old was a passenger and Parham the driver of the first vehicle.
Parham's body was taken to the medical examiner's office for autopsy. No charges are pending against the other youth.
