BEDFORD COUPLE, WYTHEVILLE MAN KILLED IN SEPARATE SATURDAY ACCIDENTS MEN IN SPORTS CARS LOST CONTROL, TROOPERS SAID

An elderly Bedford couple were killed Saturday in a two-vehicle accident in Huddleston.

Jessie Willard Goad, 79, and his wife, Katie Fortner Goad, 68, were headed south on Virginia 43 about 5:30 p.m. when a northbound car struck their station wagon head-on, state Trooper J.R. Mullins said.

James Johnson, 52, of Vinton lost control of his sports car as he crested a hill, and it spun to the side before hitting the Goads' car, Mullins said. He was flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he was in serious but stable condition.

The Goads both suffered severe chest trauma, Mullins said.

In an accident in Wythe County on Saturday, a 34-year-old man was ejected from his sports car and later died.

About 9:30 a.m., James Luther Hamblin of Wytheville entered a curve on northbound Interstate 81 too fast, lost control of his car and went off the right side of the road, state police said.

His car ran through a fence and ended up on a service road where it rolled over several times before striking a guard rail. Hamblin was thrown from the car at some point.

He died an hour later at Wythe County Community Hospital.
