BURGESS, Iva Carter, 94, of Salem, passed away Thursday, March 13, 1997. Born May 26, 1902, she was a daughter of the late Jerman W. and Martha E. Franklin Carter. She was a long time member of Laurel Ridge Primitive Baptist Church. She was retired from N&W Railway with 41 years of service. Preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Charlie Burgess, she is survived by a siste r, Mrs. Martha Deveraux, St. Louis, Miss.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 17, 1997 at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder Leonard Brammer and Elder Lane W. Carter officiating. CLEMONS, Ella Jane, 90, of Rich Creek, died Friday, March 14, 1997 in a Pearisburg hospital. Born April 3, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Elsie Perdue. Mrs. Clemons was a homemaker and a member of The Peterstown Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ned Clemons and three sons, Marvin, Buddy and Curtis Clemons; one daughter, Freda Lyn Clemons. Survivors include three sons, Claude Clemons and wife Frances, Baltimore, Md., Jackie Clemons and wife Darlene, Rich Creek, Phillip Deweese, Disputanta; five daughters, Thelma Sudduth, Bluefield, W. Va., Vada Cline, Peterstown, W. Va., Charlotte Scott and husband Bill, San Antonio, Texas, Jeanette Thornton and husband Earl, Narrows, Darlene Gautier and husband Bobby, Rich Creek; one sister, Carrie Rader, Waynesboro; 35 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Clemons was babysitter for two special children, Chris and Angie Via. DAVIS, Frank Mason, Sr., Chief Hospital Corpsman, U.S. Navy Retired, 75, of 1153 Davis Lane, Vinton, departed this life on Saturday, March 15, 1997 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born in Tom's Creek, (Wise County) Va. on July 5, 1921. He attended Hillsville High School, graduated from Ervinton (Va.) High School, and attended the College of William and Mary. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the war in Viet Nam. He served his country proudly for 30 years. Afterward he devoted the remaining years of his life working for veterans rights. He was President of Fleet Reserve Associ ation, Branch 41. He was Sr. Vice Commander and Past Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4522, where he was named All-State Commander 3 years. He was also Seam Squirrel of Military Order of the Cootie, Unit 10. He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie L. Davis, his brother, Marvin L. (Monk) Davis, and his sister, Lura Anita (Katie) Smith. Survivors are his wife of 53 years, Helen L. Ridings Davis; his mother, Ida P. Ketron Davis; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Davis Marchand, Salt Lake City, Utah, Ida K. Davis Woods, Hillsville; two sons, Frank M. Davis, Jr. and Charlie W. Davis, both of Vinton; six grandchildren, Mindy Woods Anderson, Jennifer Kay Woods, Erin Devon Davis, Jared Keith Davis, Sarah Elizabeth Davis and Blaine Edward Davis; great-grandson, Seth David Webb. Many nieces and nephews and special friends Robert and Maxine Turman. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Dennis Moore and Rev. Holly Phillips at 1 p.m. Monday, March 17, 1997 at Beaverdam Baptist Church in Chamblissburg, where his body will lie in state for one hour before the service. Military burial will follow immediately at the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, March 16 from 12 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. at Lotz Vinton Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Beaverdam Baptist Church Building Fund in his honor. They also wish to thank the VA Medical Center for their care, and pray that America will continue to support and honor it's war veterans.

DAVIS, Marjorie Flaherty, 84, died Thursday, March 13, 1997 at her home in Arlington. She was raised in Eagle Rock. She was the wife of the late John J. Davis, Jr., and mother of Marjorie Davis. Contributions may be made to Eagle Rock Methodist Church.

FELDSTEIN, Enny, 93, of Roanoke and New York, died Saturday, March 15, 1997. She was born September 2, 1903 in Amsterdam, Holland, the daughter of Jacqueline and William deVries. Mrs. Feldstein came to this country at age 19 as the bride of Charles Sheffler who preceded her in death. She lived on Long Island, New York until 1995 when she moved to Roanoke following the death of her second husband, William Feldstein. Mrs. Feldstein had a varied and full career as a business woman, and was also greatly admired for her professional career as a vocalist of French songs. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Sheffler and Paula Sheffler, Morganville, N. J., Frank W. Sheffler and Natalie Sheffler, Roanoke; eight beloved grandchildren, Beth Julie, Mindy Offit, Amy Kalieta, Marc Sheffler, Gary Sheffler, Dana Poff, Lisa Wilburn and Lonnie Stout; thirteen beloved great-grandchildren. Funeral services and interment will take place at Mt. Ararat Cemetery, Long Island, N. Y.

FITZGERALD, Ruth Arlene Coffey, 78, of Fairfield, died Friday, March 14, 1997 at her residence. She was born on January 10, 1919 in Coffeytown, Rockbridge County, a daughter of the late Henry Loving Coffey, Sr. and Sally Campbell Coffey. Mrs. Fitzgerald was retired from the Fairfield Elementary School Cafeteria Food Service. She was a member of the Fairfield United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Sunshine Sisters and the Fairfield United Methodist Women's Society. She had served 30 years as communion steward. Survivors include her husband, Manley Pleasant Fitzgerald; two sons, Eugene M. Fitzgerald, Fairfield and Garland R. Fitzgerald, Greenville; three brothers, Clarence Coffey and Henry L. Coffey, Jr., both of Buena Vista; Rev. Maurice Coffey, Madison Heights; five sisters, Vernie E. Wooldridge, Hampton; Georgia L. Stanley, Williamsport, Pa.; Jean S. Hartless, Fairfield; Elsie Coffey, Gladstone; and Beulah M. Edwards, Waynesboro, a grandson, Casey R. Fitzgerald, Stuarts Draft and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Fitzgerald was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Coffey, and two sisters, Lucille Coffey and Della Carter. FITZGERALD, Virginia Margaret Mae, 88, of Salem, died Friday, March 14, 1997. She was born in Augusta Springs. She was a longtime Salem resident. She had retired from Powell Pharmacy in Salem, where she had worked over 20 years at the food counter. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Jennings Fitzgerald. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Robert Flinchum of Glen Allen, and Carolyn and Ken Parker of Virginia Beach; a brother and sister-in-law, Willard and Barbara Reid of Woodstock; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 17, 1997, in the John M. Oakey and Son Chapel in Salem, with the Rev. R. Stuart Carlton officiating. GOINS, Annie Frye, 92, of Pilot Mountain, N.C., died Saturday morning, March 15, 1997, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was born in Sto kes County, N.C., to the late Columbus and Jeannette Fork Frye. She was the widow of Andrew Goins, and also was preceded in death by two daughters, Edith Rogers and Iris Marsh, and two sons, J. C. Goins and Glenn Goins. Surviving are her two daughters and son-in-law, Juanita G. Clifton of Salem, Va., and Shelby and Harvey Millsaps of Pilot Mountain; a son-in-law, Hubert Marsh of Westfield, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Junior and Janie Goins of Pinnacle, N.C., and Gaylon and Beulah Goins of Pilot Mountain; a daughter-in-law, Mable Goins of Pinnacle; one sister, Gracie Nunn of Mount Airy, N.C.; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. GROGAN, Gloria Delitha, 68, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, March 14, 1997. She was born in Franklin County to the late Jolly and Rebecca Hurt Childress. At an early age she joined the Bellevue Baptist Church in Hardy, and later joined her husband at Bent Mountain Baptist Church in Roanoke. She retired from the Roanoke City Public Schools, where she worked as a teacher's aid. Survivors include her husband, Owen M. Grogan Sr.; one daughter, Gloria Rena (George) Ferguson; two sons, Owen M. (Susan) Grogan Jr., and Jeffrey Wayne Grogan, all of Roanoke; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; one sister, Nora Bond, sisters-in-law, Bertha Tyree, Dove Ann Burns, and Hannah Lee Williams; brothers-in-law, Samuel (Naomi) Grogan, Lewis Grogan, William Grogan, Joseph (Mary) Grogan, and Clarence Grogan, all of Roanoke; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Monday, 2 p.m., at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. Dr. J. Eugene Young will officiate with the interment in Williams Memorial Park. GROGAN, Julia Ann, 82, of Bent Mountain, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 1997, in Lewis-Gale Hospital. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucy Rogers, on March 11, 1997. HIGHFILL, Caroline M., 77, of Roanoke, died, Friday, March 14, 1997. She was a retired Special Education School Teacher in Roanoke County where she had worked for 12 years. In 1976 she was voted Mother of the Year in Education of the Roanoke Valley. She was a member of the Raleigh Ct. Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, William H. Highfill Jr., and her children, Caroline K. Highfill, Hunter H. Burrow, William H. Highfill III and his wife Jamie, Madison M. Highfill and wife June, Jefferson W. Highfill and wife Katie, Elizabeth H. Highfill, Samuel G. Highfill and wife Donna, Susan P. Highfill. Three sisters, Mary Jane Maxwell, Emma Hunter Maxwell and Jean Maxwell Hobbie , a brother George M. Maxwell Jr. 13 grandchildren. HUNTER, Eleanor Beasley, 76, of Pearisburg, died Saturday, March 15, 1997 following a long illness. Mrs. Hunter was born in Peterstown, W. Va on August 26, 1920, and was a daughter of the late George W. Beasley and Arabella Buckland Beasley. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers, Sherman Beasley, Arnold Beasley and Garland Beasley; four sisters, Hazel Frazier, Lillian Beasley, Vivian Dillon, Phyllis Tuning and Myrtle Mutter. Mrs. Hunter was the widow of Howard P. Hunter. Eleanor was a member of the Pearisburg Baptist Church, and was retired from Hoechst-Celanese Corp. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl Hunter Kingrea and husband Eddie, Pearisburg; brother, George Beasley, Red Sulphur Springs, W. Va.; sisters, Agnes Keatley, Peterstown, W. KNACK, Mary Ruth, (``Mimi""), 24, of Waynesboro, formerly of Blacksburg, died Saturday, March 15, 1997, in Augusta Medical Center. She was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on October 30, 1972. She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Karl (``Johnny"") Knack. Mimi graduated from Blacksburg High School in 1992 and attended New River Community College. She was an active member of Girl Scout Troop #209 in Blacksburg. She is survived by her parents, Fredrick H. (``Rick"") and Shirley King Knack of Lake Wylie, S.C.; a paternal grandmother, Carrie H. Knack of Virginia Beach; a maternal grandmother, Shirley F. King of Kingsport, Tenn.; a maternal great-grandmother, Josie R. Fleenor of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a sister, Kathryn A. MAYS, Harry A., 76, of Salem, died Friday, March 14, 1997. A native of Covington, he was a retired Master Sgt. in the U. S. Air Force, and a retired automotive mechanic. He was a former member of Edgemont Presbyterian Church, Covington. He was a current member of Wildhurst Presbyterian Church, and also attended Evangelical Methodist Church, Salem. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. William C. (Sandy) Garber, Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. John R. McDonald, Sanford, N. C.; two brothers, Bill Mays, Smith Mountain Lake, Berkley Mays, Covington; his step-mother, Ethel Mays, Covington; three stepsons, Neil Hartwell, Tony Kelley, Salem, Robert Gordon, Myrtle Beach, S. MORSE, Marjorie Bollard, (``Madge''), of Roanoke, died Friday, March 14, 1997. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the church choir, the Evelyn Townsend Circle and was the church representative to the Roanoke City Rescue Mission. The Morses moved to Roanoke from Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Surviving are her husband, David L. Morse; two sons, David L. Morse, Jr., Troy, Mich., Gary B. Morse, Smyrna, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Monica Morse, Troy, Dana Morse and Ian Morse, Smyrna; two sisters, Judy Clark, Chester, England, Catherine Lawrence, Wilmslow, England; and several nieces and nephews in both the United States and England. PHILLIPS, Warren Preston, (``Hub""), 73, of 1500 Clarement Court, Pulaski, died Saturday, March 15, 1997, at his home. He was born in Bedford County on June 18, 1923, and was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Thomas Phillips. He attended New London Academy in Forest, Phillips Business College in Lynchburg and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He was a member of Pulaski Elks Lodge and Pulaski VFW Post #1184, and served on the Pulaski Zoning Commission. He was the owner of Southwest Motors from 1966 to 1977. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a member of Pulaski American Legion Post #7. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Pulaski. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Phyllis Hogan Phillips of Pulaski; two sons, Warren Preston Phillips II of Virginia Beach and Thomas Lee Phillips of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jerry Davis of Pulaski; one grandson, John Warren Lucas of Pulaski, and two sisters, Margaret Ballowe of Roanoke and Virginia Robertson of Bedford. Mr. Phillips will be cremated and there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to First United Methodist Church, 135 Fourth Street, N.W., Pulaski, Va. 24301. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.

REYNOLDS, Flora M., of Bedford, passed away Friday, March 14, 1997 at the house of her daughter, Dorothy V. Stear, 612 Lee Street, Bedford, Va. She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy V. Stear; one sister, Effie M. Orange, Bedford; one granddaughter, Wanda M. Booth, Bedford; three grandsons of Roanoke; three great-grandsons of Bedford; two great-great-granddaughters; three great-great-grandsons, all of Bedford. Funeral services will be private. RITCHIE, Clarinda Stewart (Kay) 57, of Lake Worth, Fla., formerly of Roanoke, died Wednesday, February 19, 1997. She was predeceased by her parents, Minor D. Stewart and Thelma Creasy Stewart; her twin sister, Kimarly Stewart Cross. She is survived by her husband, Albert R. SPRADLIN, Henry, 83, of Blacksburg, died Friday, March 14, 1997, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born in Prestonburg, Ky., on January 14, 1914, to the late Henry and Florence Brown Spradlin. Mr. Spradlin was a retired dairy farmer and construction engineer. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy in the Northern and Central Pacific. He was active in the Montgomery County Farm Bureau, and was a former member of the Montgomery County Planning Commission. Mr. Spradlin was also a member of the Democratic Party and Post #5311 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was further honored with a commission as Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of Blacksburg United Methodist Church and served on many boards and committees helping to improve the church, including renovation of the Wisner Building and the new administrative offices. He is survived by his wife, Lucille V. Spradlin of Blacksburg; three sons, Thomas L. Spradlin of Lakeland, Fla., Robert R. Spradlin of Lancaster, Ohio, and H. Roy Spradlin of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two daughters, J. Carol Rhodes of Butler, Ohio, and Shirley Bowen of Roanoke; a sister, Garnet Fairchild of Prestonburg, Ky.; three brothers, Herbert Spradlin and Bill C. Spradlin, both of Prestonburg, Ky., and Scott Spradlin of Pikeville, Ky.; numerous grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Monday, March 17, 1997, at 10 a.m., in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg, with the Rev. Lynne Alley-Grant officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.

SPURLOCK, Bernard Borden, 68, of Salem, passed away Thursday, March 13, 1997, after a lengthy illness. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Thomas and Willie Ann Spurlock. He is survived by his wife Margaret, children, Bernard Junior (B. B.) of Puerto Rico; Sharon of Philadelphia Penn.; and Dwayne of Emporia. Step-children, Cynthia (Keith) Gaines of Salem; Ricky (Camellia) Jones of Roanoke; 9 grandchildren, mother in-law, Mrs. Lossie Wynn of Mt. Olive N.C.; sister-in-law, Lilie Wynn of Mt. Olive N.C. and brother-in-law Robert Wynn of New City, N.Y. and Irvin Lafton of Philadelphia, Pa; four sisters, Helen (Ransom) Scarborough of Philadelphia, Pa; Betty Shearin of Columbia, S.C.; Lois (Matthew) Hopson of Roanoke; Gracie (James Robert Hopson of Storrs, Conn.; three brothers, Leonard (Laura) Spurlock of Salem, Kelly (Odessa) Spurlock of Willimantic, Conn.; James (Christine) Spurlock of Willimantic, Conn.; a devoted nephew, Terry (Janice) Wynn of Mt.
