W&L UPSETS GETTYSBURG IN LACROSSE

The seventh-ranked Washington & Lee men's lacrosse team overcame a four-goal deficit to defeat fifth-ranked Gettysburg 11-8 Saturday in Gettysburg, Pa.

The Bullets scored the game's first four goals, and led 5-2 after one quarter. The Generals (5-0), who didn't allow a Gettysburg shot in the second period, battled back to take a 6-5 lead on a pair of goals by Ande Jenkins just before the end of the first half.

W&L's Tom Fallace scored two goals in the third quarter as the Generals stretched the lead to 10-6 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Paul Stanley had three goals and two assists for W&L.

VMI: Brothers Mason and Charlie Ayers each had career-best games to lead the Keydets to a 22-15 win over Marist in Richmond.

Mason Ayers scored seven goals, while Charlie registered 18 saves. Rob Worrell scored five goals for VMI, while Matt Gallienne added four.

Radford: The Highlanders fell behind early, but came back to upend Mount St. Mary's 12-10 in Emmitsburg, Md.

The Mountaineers (2-3) raced out to a 4-0 advantage in the first period before Radford rallied to take an 8-7 lead on a goal by Jimmy Polucha with 12:15 left. After the Mount tied the score, the Highlanders (2-2) reeled off two goals in three minutes to seize control.

Virginia Tech: Colgate (1-0) blew open a tight women's game with four straight goals in the second half en route to a 10-7 victory over the Hokies (2-2) in Columbus, Ohio.

Roanoke: Ali Oglesby pumped in six goals and added an assist to lead the Maroons to a 17-12 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory at Randolph-Macon in Ashland.

Lisa Franzino added four goals for Roanoke (2-1, 2-0), while Meg Gibson scored three goals and had two assists for the Yellow Jackets (0-2, 0-2).

Hollins: Caroline McGehee scored five goals to lead Hollins to a 9-2 win over visiting Trinity College.

Washington & Lee: The Generals scored the game's first 14 goals as Washington & Lee's women crushed Guilford 17-4 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game in Greensboro.

Lorraine Taurassi scored four goals, while Katherine Riddle and Mary Jo Mahoney each added three goals for the Generals (4-1, 3-1). Tina Beahan had three goals for the Quakers (2-1, 0-1).

BASEBALL

Ga. Tech edges Hokies

Kris Wilson's two-out single in the ninth inning drove in Adam Easterling from second base with the winning run to give fourth-ranked Georgia Tech (18-2) a 9-8 victory over the Hokies in Atlanta.

Virginia Tech (5-11) had tied the game with a three-run ninth on a pair of hits and Barry Gauch's three-run homer. Gauch was 2-for-3 with four runs batted in, while the Hokies' Matt Griswold was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.

VMI: Brad Davis led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and scored on an error to give the Keydets a 6-5 victory and a doubleheader sweep over Western Carolina in Southern Conference action in Lexington.

Eric East (Glenvar) hit a grand slam to key an eight-run third inning as VMI came back from a 4-0 deficit to rout the Catamounts 17-9 in the first game.

Washington & Lee: Virginia Wesleyan scored 13 runs in the final two innings as the Marlins overcame an 11-3 deficit to defeat the Generals 16-15 in the first game of an ODAC doubleheader in Lexington.

The Marlins (11-2, 6-0) held W&L (4-8, 1-3) to six hits in the second game as the Marlins earned a sweep with a 9-3 win in a contest called after five innings due to darkness.

Ferrum: The Panthers' game at Christopher Newport on Saturday was postponed due to rain. The teams will play a doubleheader today at 11 a.m.

SOFTBALL

Radford sweeps Mercer

Radford swept a doubleheader against Mercer, winning game one 5-4 and coming back for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

Melissa Pickel had a pair of triples and drove in three runs in two games for Radford (8-13).

Virginia Tech: The Hokies dropped a pair of games to Maryland, 7-2 and 12-4 in College Park, Md.

In the first game, Terri Garland (Pulaski County) was 2-for-3 for Tech. The second game was called after Maryland scored five runs in the fifth inning.

Roanoke: The Maroons advanced to the championship bracket of the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational in Norfolk, where they lost to the host Marlins 2-1.

Roanoke (1-5), which dropped a 4-3 decision to North Carolina Wesleyan, defeated Averett 10-0 to advance to the winners' bracket.

Ferrum: The Panthers (5-8) went 1-2 at the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational,defeating Averett 6-5, while falling to Christopher Newport 5-1 and Salisbury State 15-5.

Stanley an All-American

Washington & Lee freshman Brooke Stanley earned All-America honors in the 100-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at Oxford, Ohio.

Stanley was seventh in the 100-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 53.22 seconds.

Tech track: Virginia Tech senior Katie Ollendick set a school record in the heptathlon with 4,887 points at the College Station Relays in College Station, Texas.

Ollendick finished fifth in the event, while freshman Brandi Smith came in eighth with a combined score of 4,661.

Washington & Lee Invitational: Frostburg State captured the men's and women's championships in the Bobcats' first trip to the Washington & Lee Invitational in Lexington.

The Frostburg State men scored 132 points to easily outdistance Susquehanna (89 points). W&L (42) finished fifth in the meet, while Lynchburg (33) was sixth and Roanoke (20) placed ninth.

In the women's meet, the Bobcats had 110 points to Western Maryland's 57. The Generals (46) finished sixth and Roanoke (29) was ninth.
