Two team records fall as Roanoke locks up an ECHL playoff spot
Jeff Jablonski and Dave Gagnon established franchise records and the Roanoke Express clinched an East Coast Hockey League playoff berth Saturday with a 2-0 win over the Raleigh IceCaps.
Gagnon registered his team-record third shutout of the season and Jeff Jablonski set an Express single-season record with his 44th goal. Both veteran players came up big in the third period when Roanoke (35-24-4) needed it.
The Express finally broke up the goalies' duel when Jeff Loder knocked in a rebound past Raleigh netminder Trent Cavicchi with 2:57 left. Jablonski added an empty-netter with 1:08 left.
That goal broke the previous Express record of 43 goals scored by Jeff Jestadt in 1993-94. Gagnon's third shutout broke the mark held by Paul Cohen (1993-94) and Daniel Berthiaume (1995-96).
