MAROONS KNOCK OFF NO. 2 OHIO WESLEYAN IN MEN'S LACROSSE

Roanoke College ended a 15-year drought by upsetting No.2-ranked Ohio Wesleyan 10-5 in a men's lacrosse match at Alumni Field on Sunday.

The Maroons scored five straight goals bridging the first and second quarters in beating the Battling Bishops for the first time since 1982.

Senior attackman Jeff Jones scored three goals for Roanoke (3-1) and Gregg Fasanaro added two. Jones scored two of his goals during the 5-0 stretch that gave Roanoke a 6-2 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan (2-1) pulled to 6-4 in the third before Fasanaro and Danny Soi scored to make it 8-4.

Chris Gordon made 19 saves for Roanoke, nine in the third quarter.

W&L women: Emily Gipson, Katherine Riddle and Lorraine Taurassi scored three goals in Washington and Lee's 12-7 win over Colorado College. The Generals (5-1) scored five goals in a span of 5:41 in the first half to take an 8-3 lead.

Yellow Jackets pound Virginia Tech

Mark Fischer and Jay Hood hit two-run homers in a five-run first inning and J.J. Thomas added a three-run homer during a seven-run rally in the third as Georgia Tech outlasted Virginia Tech 20-13 on Sunday.

Kris Wilson added a two-run homer in the third for the Yellow Jackets (19-2), who had 17 hits. The Hokies had 15 hits, including a three-run homer by Barry Gauch in the third inning that reduced Georgia Tech's lead to 6-5.

Ferrum: Riley Hodges doubled and homered and knocked in three runs and Ty Mason rapped a three-run triple to lead the Panthers to an 11-9 win over Christopher Newport in the first game of a Dixie Conference doubleheader at Ferrum. The Panthers (12-2, 4-1) won the second game 6-3 as Todd Cunningham had two hits and two RBI.

Ben Brown got the win in the first game by striking out eight in seven innings. Jermaine Fletcher fanned six in winning the second game. Christopher Newport is 10-10, 1-5.

VMI: Western Carolina scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to a 13-6 win over the Keydets at Patchin Field in Lexington. The Catamounts (17-10-1 overall, 8-4 Southern Conference) needed only one hit in the first, but took advantage of six walks and a VMI error. Scott Thompkins and Mike Landberg both homered for VMI (6-16, 2-4).

Hokies upset Boise State in tennis

The Virginia Tech men's tennis team upset fourth-ranked Boise State 4-3 in the finals of the Air Touch Cellular Tennis Classic in Boise, Idaho. Aaron Marchetti, Tech's top seed and the 81st-ranked player in the country, defeated Ernesto Diaz 7-5, 6-4. Oliver Mayo, the No.27 player, beat David Dalgaard 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 at No.2. Tech's Mark Tespes earned the Hokies' other singles win.

In doubles, the team of Marek Pfeil (Blacksburg) and Mayo won in doubles play to clinch it.

Ferrum softball: Tracy Cummings (Alleghany) was 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI as the Panthers (6-9) beat Longwood 13-5 to salvage a doubleheader. The Lancers won the first game 14-2.

Tech softball: Dawn Medina tripled in the winning run in the top of the eighth inning to lift the Hokies (10-10, 1-1) to a 2-1 Atlantic 10 Conference win over La Salle at Philadelphia. Tech lost the first game of the doubleheader 7-0.

Tech track and field: Michelle Smith set a school record in the discus with a toss of 48.53 meters as the Virginia Tech women finished seventh in the College Station (Texas) Relays.

NCAA swimming: Virginia Tech's Jackie Davoud placed 25th in the 1-meter board during the NCAA Zone B diving championships at Auburn, Ala. Martha Peck was 30th, Dana Nagle was 36th.

State gymnastics: Radford's Holly Sanders won the vault competition with a 9.775 and the Highlanders placed second in the women's state gymnastics meet at James Madison. The Dukes won the event with a record 189.975 points, followed by Radford and William and Mary.
