AKERS, Charles Everette , Sr., 77, of Radford, passed away Saturday, March 22, 1997 at Carilion Radford Community Hospital. Born in Pulaski Co., Va. on March 1, 1920, he was the son of the late William D. and Dessie Mae Price Akers. He was retired owner and operator of an air-conditioning business in Maryland, a member of the Steamfitters Local 491 of Roanoke and Local 602 of Washington, D.C. and a member of the St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church in Maryland. He was preceded in death by two brothers and seven sisters. Surviving are his wife, Crisanta M. Akers; three sons, Charles E. Akers, Jr. of Warrenton, Gerald E. Akers of Belspring and James E. Akers of Riner; three daughters, Jeanette Younce of Belspring, Juliana Akers of Kensington, Md. and Sandra McQuerry of Goldsboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and four geat-grandchildren. A Catholic Prayer Service will be held Tuesday, March 25, 1997, at 11 a.m. in the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford, with Father Jim Grealish officiating. Interment will follow in the Hickman Cemetery in Pulaski County. The family will receive friends at Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

CARPER, Norwood Greer, (``Chris""), 82, of Leawood, Kan., died Saturday, March 22, 1997, in St. Luke's Hospital. A memorial service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 55th and Oak, at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 25. Mr. Carper was born in Boones Mill, Va. He was raised in Roanoke, Va., and graduated from Jefferson High School. His father, Norwood Carper Sr., was founder and president of Johnson-Carper Furniture. He was a 60-year resident of Kansas City. An early aviator, he flew a glider at age 14, and obtained his pilot's license at age 16 after receiving flying instructions from Clayton Lemon, a well-known aviator from Roanoke. He was captain of his own air freight line at age 22, and at age 26 became an airline captain. He graduated from St. Louis University. He was a lieutenant colonel in World War II and served as a captain for TWA for over 30 years. He was a member and elder of Second Presbyterian Church. He served on the Board of Directors of the Gillis Home for Boys and the Kansas City Youth Symphony. He was a member of Quiet Birdmen, OX-5 Club, the TWA Retired Pilots Association and the Kansas City Organ Club. He served as president of the TWA Credit Union and later was regional vice-president of the Air Lines Pilots Association. He was active in the Boy Scouts. He loved organ music and was an accomplished amateur organist. He was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Carper Waldrop. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane C. Carper of the home; a son, James C. Carper of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter, Cherie C. Miles of Leawood; a son, John T. Carper of Prairie Village, Kan., and seven grandchildren, Rebecca and Marcie Carper, Christopher, Jane and John Miles, and Greer and Tazewell Carper. He was loved by his family and many friends, who will miss him. Arrangements by D. W. Newcomer's Sons Funeral Home, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kan.

CROW, William Charles, (``Chuck""), 65, of Roanoke County, died Sunday, March 23, 1997 at his home. Mr. Crow was a graduate of La Vega High School in Waco, Texas and a graduate of Texas A & M. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force and served in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Crow retired from Elizabeth Arden in 1989, where he served as the Director of Planning, Purchasing and Production. Charles was the only person to serve two terms as President of the United Way of Virginia. After retirement, Chuck went to work as the Executive Director of the S.M.L. Chamber of Commerce. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lacy Kendall Booth. Surviving are his wife of forty-three years, Nancy Crow of Roanoke County; four daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Bob Bishop of Salem, Patti and Drew Lucas of Roanoke Co., Nanci and David Booth of Vinton, Betsy and Mike Cullen of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Chris Bishop, Kathryn Sisson, Brad and Chelsea Booth, Andrew and Kevin Cullen; two sisters, Virgie Bruner of Waco, Texas and Beverly Moore of Hewitt, Texas. Memorial services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel on Wednesday, March 26, 1997, time to be announced. DOUGLASS, Patricia M., 66, of Enfield, Conn., died Sunday, March 23, 1997 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Lissa and Thomas Magauran, after a courage ous battle with cancer. She was born in Mineola, N.Y. She was a former resident of Manhassett, Long Island and a former resident of Roanoke, Va. Besides her daughter and son-in-law, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Debbie Nylander of Roanoke; also three grandchildren,Will Nylander and Rady and Anne Magauran. Mrs. Douglass is also survived by one sister, Elizabeth Harrison of Garden City, Long Island. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Marthas Church, 214 Brainard Rd., Enfield, CT. Burial will be in St. Patricks King St. Cemetery. EATON, Virgie A. Sifford, of Portsmouth, Ohio, passed away Saturday, March 22, 1997 after a long illness with cancer. She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Blanch Page, daughter, Melinda Eaton, and nephew, Anthony Kei th Long. She is survived by her husband, Wilburt C. Eaton, II, Portsmouth, Ohio; one son, Wilburt C. Eaton, III, Portsmouth, Ohio; one daughter, Margaret Eaton of Oklahoma; four grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Marshall and Carol Page of Parrott, Va.; three sisters, Elizabeth and James Patterson, Lillian, Alabama, Shirley and James Shanklin of Hiwassee, Va., Linda and Paul Duncan of Willis, Va.; four stepsisters and two stepbrothers. EVERSOLE, Dallas Gleaves, 89, of Route 2, Max Meadows, the Fort Chiswell community, died Saturday, March 22, 1997, in Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Albert and Myrtle Akers Eversole. He began his career as operator of the ferry at Austinville, and was owner and operator of Eversole Drilling Company Inc. for more than 30 years. He was a life member of the Austinville Assembly of God Church, where he served as honorary trustee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hallie Burnett Eversole. He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Walt Whisman of Edison, N.J., Irene and Jack Mobellini of Wytheville, Evelyn Eversole of Route 2, Max Meadows, and Carolyn and Joe Arnold of Houston, Texas; four sons and daughters-in-law, Owen G. and Dorothy J. Eversole of Route 2, Max Meadows, Randolph and Donna Eversole of Route 3, Max Meadows, Rev. Willard and Earlene Eversole of Route 2, Max Meadows and Dewey G. HANGER, Hazel Elizabeth Parry, 90, of Staunton, widow of Robert S. Hanger, died Saturday, March 22, 1997, in Fishersville. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Betty H. Lamb of Staunton; a son, Robert S. HangerJr. of Fishersville; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. HODGES, Mary B., 78, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, March 22, 1997. She was the widow of W. D. Hodges. She is survived by a brother, Emory J. Bailey; special nieces, Mabel W. Tuck and husband, L. H. Tuck, and Rosemary and husband, Tim Harris; nephew, Wayne Tuck; two stepdaughters, Murielene H. Swindeck and Betty H. Stoneman Roberts; grandchildren, William B. S windeck, Lisa Stoneman Updike and Jennifer Stoneman; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Nick Updike, and numerous other nieces and nephews. HOLLINS, Helen Virginia Martin, 83, of Roanoke, died Saturday, March 22, 1997, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Oakley R. Hollins, and one son, Glenn W. Hollins. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Linda H. and Fred R. Hunziker of Hardy; one daughter-in-law, JoAnn B. Hollins of Roanoke; gra ndchildren, Suzi H. Neighbors and her husband, Larry, Bradley R. Hunziker and wife, Mary, Jill H. Maddy and husband, Steve, and Sarah E. Hunziker; great-grandchildren, Devin Neighbors and Lyndsay Neighbors; one sister, Leah M. Denison of Grand Island, Fla., and a faithful companion, Kity Lige. HOLMAN, William Everette, (``Bill""), 63, of Salem, died Sunday, March 23, 1997. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Laura Graham Holman; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy M. and Vickie Holman of Danville; daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer H. and Steve Hunter of Salem, and Julie H. and Samuel Clipp of East Greenville, Pa.; grandchildren, Michele and Melanie Brown, Emily and Jessica Hunter, Michael and Casey Ralston, and Graham and Will Holman; brothers, James Holman of Norfolk, Billy Holman and Bruce Holman of Maryland, Earl Holman of Florida and Barry Holman of Herndon, and sisters, Mary Reynolds and Barbara Cupp of Salem. HOPKINS, Mary Ann Collins, 68, died Sunday morning, March 23, 1997, at her home in Pearisburg. Mrs. Hopkins was born on January 6, 1929, in McVeigh Pike County, Ky., and was a daughter of the late Charley and Mary Sue Ratliff Collins. Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Clifton Collins. Mrs. Hopkins and her husband, Luke, ran the East End Store in Pearisburg for 30 years. She is survived by her husband, Luke Hopkins of Pearisburg; one brother, Bill Collins of Orlando, Fla.; several nieces and nephews, and special friends, the Donald and Shirley Kast family. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, 1997, at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg, with interment following in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. McGEE, Verta Hackney, 78, of Marietta, Ga., formerly of Roanoke, Va., passed away Saturday, March 22, 1997. She was the widow of Herman D. McGee, was a member of West End P resbyterian Church, and was a 1937 graduate of Grundy High School. She is survived by a daughter, Dana Sue McGee Andrews of Edwards, Calif.; two sons, Ward Douglas McGee of Menlo Park, Calif., and Joseph L. McGee of Marietta, Ga.; sisters, Helen H. Overfelt of Roanoke, Mary H. Kervitsky of Unatilla, Fla., and Shirley A. Hackney of Springfield, Va.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. NACKLEY, Sadie C., 91, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, March 23, 1997, at her home. She was the retired owner of Nackley's Confectionery in the Market Building. She was the daughter of Moses and Azzie Nackley. She was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, the Catholic Historical Society of the Roanoke Valley and the Catholic Golden Age Group. She sponsored many widows and 50 underprivileged children worldwide for the past 40 years. She was also a promoter of the Association of the Miraculous Medal for over 40 years. Surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert Nackley of Hickory, N.C., Woodrow and Geneva Nackley of Roanoke, Joseph N. Nackley of Roanoke, Sam and Norris Nackley of Roanoke and Edna Nackley of Shreveport, La.; 19 nieces and nephews, and 45 great-nieces and great-nephews. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, 1997, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Randy Rule officiating. Burial will follow in St. Andrew's Diocesan Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel at 7 p.m. Monday. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday. STUART, Mary Lillian, 96, of Narrows, passed away on Friday, March 21, 1997, at Skyline Manor Nursing Home in Floyd. Born on February 2, 1901, she dedicated her life to others. After taking care of her father for several years, she became a member of the Wayside Community and a member of the Wayside Baptist Church in Narrows. As a member of the community, she was always there to lend a helping hand whenever needed. She expressed her love and dedication for her church by her willingness to serve as Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, and secretary/treasurer. She worked at Hoescht-Celanese in Narrows, retiring after 25 years of service. After retirement, she continued to serve her community until a stroke disabled her in 1980. She was preceded in death by her parents, John A. and Edmonia Davis Stuart; as well as brothers, John W., Thomas T., Charles B., Robert F., George S., Fred, Ira H., and Johnnie W. Stuart; and sisters, Hattie P., Frances E., Allice I., Sarah E., Ethel R., and Myrtle V. She is survived by Donald W. and Glenda C. Thomas of Riner; and their children, Christa T. Phillips of Sierra Vista, Ariz. and Nathan W. Thomas of Riner. Survivors also include numerous nieces and nephews, and a special nephew, Powell Trivett of Hamilton, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 24, 1997, at Kendall Funeral Home with entombment following at Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg.

SWANSON, Cora Mae Cline, 45, of Rt. 4, Moneta, passed away Saturday, March 22, 1997 in a local hospital. She was a retired secretary for RADAR and a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Raymond Cline. Surviving are her husband, Clarence R. Swanson; one son, Chad Everett Swanson, of Moneta; one daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda Denise and Brian Hogan of Jacksonville, N.C.; two brothers, Don Cline of Goodview, Roy E. Cline of Roanoke; two sisters, Delores M. Turner and Barbara A. Lang, both of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon Tuesday, March 25, 1997 from the Lotz Vinton Chapel. The Rev. Earl B.
