Virginia Tech left fielder Eric Shiflett's two-out two-run single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Hokies a 10-9 victory over Atlantic 10 foe George Washington on Sunday in Blacksburg. The victory gave Tech a three-game sweep of GW in its first conference series of the season and improved its overall record to 10-12.
Shiflett finished the afternoon with four hits, including his first collegiate home run, and five RBI. Former Franklin County standout Chad Foutz went 5-of-6 and scored three runs. Rob Simms picked up the victory in relief for the Hokies.
The Colonials (7-16, 0-3) scored six unanswered runs and had a one-run lead in the ninth.
Following a Kevin Kurilla single and a walk to Gray Hodges, Foutz kept Hokie hopes alive with a two-out infield single to load the bases. Shiflett ended the contest by driving an 0-1 single to right off GW reliever Thomas Baginski.
VMI: Franco Martin drove in four runs and Scott Thompkins hit his eighth homer of the season as the Keydets defeated Appalachian State 15-11 in a Southern Conference game in Lexington.
VMI (8-17, 4-5) spotted the Mountaineers (10-18, 5-9) three runs in the fourth, but the Keydets came back to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the inning. VMI built its lead to 15-6 with 10 runs in the sixth through eighth innnings.
Starting pitcher Danny Hughes pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits and five runs to register the win.

Deal places second
Virginia Tech's Curtis Deal tied for second in the individual competition and the Hokies were second overall at the Pepsi-Bradford Creek Classic in Richmond.
Richmond's Ken MacDonald won the individual title with a tournament-record total of 4-under-par 212, one stroke better than Deal and Tennessee-Chattanooga's Francois Nicolas, both of whom also broke the old record. Tech freshman Brad Hyler was 12th, with a 219 total.
Eastern Kentucky won the team title with an 873 total, 10 strokes ahead of the Hokies.
Roanoke softball: The Maroons dropped two games to Averett, the fifth and sixth times the teams have met this season. The Cougars won the first game 10-6 as Northside graduate Shannon Yopp struck out five. Roanoke lost the second game 7-4.
Roanoke second baseman Nikki Potter went 4-for-8 with two runs batted in in the two games and left fielder Leigh Carter also drove in two runs.
Wendell runner-up: Roanoke's Jeff Wendell placed second in a Sports Club Car of America 45-mile sprint race held Sunday at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Wendell, competing in the Showroom Stock C class, picked up his third top 3 finish in three events this season and secured second place in the SCCA Southeast division points standings.
