Several students from Blacksburg High School will compete in the Catholic Grand National Forensics Tournament. The students qualified for the tournament after wins in the Catholic Forensic League National Qualifier Tournament at Longwood College in Farmville. The team placed third at the tournament, which included teams from throughout Virginia. The students who qualified for the nationals are:
Corrine Brown, a junior, in dramatic performance; senior Feras Kahn qualified as an alternate.
Phoebe Connelly, Lucas Kline, Yoni Schneller, all sophomores, and freshman Nisha Nagarkatti, in extemporaneous speaking.
Rochelle Gandour, a junior, in original oratory; senior Laura Lentz qualified as an alternate.
Nick Murray, a freshman, and Ibraheem Riad, a sophomore, in policy debate.
In addition, senior Amee Ranck was selected as an alternate for nationals in oral interpretation and senior Tony Murray was selected as an alternate for nationals in student congress. The team is coached by Karen Finch and Karen Coston.
Jason Butler, a senior at Giles High School, is a recipient of a $1,000 Wal-Mart scholarship. He received the award based on his academic performance and involvement in school and community activities. Butler is on the school's newspaper staff and active with Young Life. He also plays soccer and basketball. Butler plans to attend Campbell University in North Carolina next fall. He is the son of Teresa Marcussen of Pearisburg.
Nineteen students from Shawsville High School are recipients of the statewide Academic Excellence Award from the Virginia High School League. The program recognizes student athletes who also excel in the classroom. The students are:
Basketball: Chance Hall, Linden Ryan, Larry Smith.
Volleyball: Beth Burdette, Megan Forster, Sarah Hagood, Staci Harless, Sarah Hasenfratz, Kristi Henson, Kim Maxwell, Cindy Yopp.
Wrestling: Barnett Carr, Paul Sink, T.J. Sutherland.
Cheerleading: Jessica Harr, Nicole Hayth, April Ratliff, Christina St. Clair, Maxwell.
EVENTS, MEETINGS & HAPPENINGS
Golden Cougar discount cards are on sale at local businesses in Pulaski. The cards are being sold by the Pulaski County High School band and can be purchased for $5. Cards can be bought at the following businesses: State Farm Insurance in Dublin (Wally Flinchum's office), First Virginia Bank in Dublin and the Community National Bank in Pulaski. The cards give discounts at 15 area businesses. Proceeds will go toward the band's instrument fund. Cards are good until the end of 1997.
The Montgomery County Health Advisory Board will meet March 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the school board office. The meeting is open to the public.
Gilbert Linkous Elementary School will have a Scholastic Book Fair April 1-4. Proceeds from the fair will go toward the purchase of library materials. Book fair hours will be April 1-2, 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 5:30-7:30 p.m.; April 3, 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and April 4, 8:45 to 11 a.m.
