Ben Petrick was 3-for-3 and Clint Bryant had a two-run double as the Salem Avalanche beat the San Jose Giants 5-3 in a Class A Cactus League spring training game in Tuscon, Ariz., on Monday.
Avalanche starter Tom Stepka scattered six hits and struck out three in four scoreless innings. Salem is 5-1 in Cactus League play.
Petrick, Salem's catcher and the Colorado Rockies' second-round pick in the 1995 draft, knocked in a run with a first-inning double and scored twice. Bryant, a third baseman, doubled in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Justin Drizos, a first baseman who clubbed 18 home runs for the Asheville Tourists last season, added a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Washington and Lee baseball: Bob Weston pitched the Generals' first shutout since 1991 as W&L beat Hampden-Sydney 6-0 at Smith Field in Lexington.
Weston (3-2) struck out eight and the only hits allowed were two singles. E.J. Murphy went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Generals (5-9 overall, 2-3 ODAC), who scored five runs in the second inning. Hampden-Sydney fell to 2-9, 0-3.

Victory fighters do well
After only seven weeks of training with the fledgling Roanoke-based Victory Boxing Club, three local boxers won bouts Saturday at a Golden Glove competition at the Carver Recreation Auditorium in Johnson City, Tenn.
In his debut, 147-pound David Novia outpointed hometown favorite Fred Turner (3-1). Carlos ``Charlie'' Ramirez (5-1) combined a first-round knockdown with a devastating body attack to beat Tracy Burris (5-1). Heavyweight Ben Devers (1-0) surprised the crowd with a unanimous decision over Michael Thomas (4-5) of Charlotte, N.C.
``Hurricane'' Harry Cunningham, the Virginia amateur heavyweight champion, improved to 5-0 with a third-round unanimous decision over Jeremy Dixon on the same card.
Cunningham and Dixon will have a rematch April 26 in the Spring Slugfest at the Valley Center (formerly Valley Country). For tickets call 366-5788.
The Roanoke City Boxing Association has a stable of 40 fighters who train at Victory Gym inside Victory Stadium. The club next will compete in the Pernell Whitaker Golden Glove championships from April 10-12 in Norfolk.

Tech sweeps Fordham
Michelle Meadows and Jennifer McKibben combined for four out-of-the-park home runs as Virginia Tech swept an Atlantic 10 Conference softball doubleheader from Fordham 7-3 and 7-3 at Salem's Moyer Sports Complex.
Meadows and McKibben homered twice for Tech (12-14, 3-1) and clubbed back-to-back homers in the second game. The homers were the first out-of-the-park homers in the team's two-year history.
Radford softball: Laura Jewett tossed a two-hit shutout as Radford (13-15, 1-3) beat Charleston Southern 6-0 and earn a split of a Big South Conference softball doubleheader at Dedmon Center Park. The Buccaneers (12-10, 1-1) won the first game.
