ALLEN, Mary Josephine Haynes, of Roanoke, died at her home on Friday, March 21, 1997, having lived quite comfortably with cancer of the lung for nearly two years. Born November 28, 1924 in Tennessee, she graduated from Colliersville High School (TN) in 1943 and from Blue Mountain College (MS) in 1947. She received her MA in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she met her future husband, John Alexander ``Lex"" Allen. They married in 1951 and lived for a time in Rochester, N.Y. until Lex accepted a position in the English Department at Hollins College. For twenty of Lex's thirty-eight ye ars on the faculty, the Allen family lived on campus and there Jo established her reputation as the consummate hostess and mentor especially to new faculty. When her girls were young, Jo also taught English and Hollins and at the old University of Virginia Roanoke Extension, worked on staff at the Hollins College Library and did many stints in Princeton, N.J. as a reader of Advanced Placement exams in English. The Allens spent almost every summer for the last 44 years at their summer residence in Brewster Park on Cape Cod, MA. In the mid-eighties, the Allens moved from their campus house to a residence on Jefferson Street in Roanoke. At that time Jo found the strength to confront her addiction to alcohol. In January of this year she qualified for her twelve year ``chip"" in Alcoholics Anonymous. During her years as an active participant in AA, she was an inspiration to many in the fellowship both in Roanoke and on Cape Cod, and served as a loving sponsor to many women over the years. From 1988 to 1993 she was on the Board of Directors of Bethany Hall, a recovery home for alcoholic and drug-addicted women, serving as president of the Board in the last year of her tenure. She was also an active member and past president of the Roanoke Democratic Women's Club. Josephine is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, who was killed in a car accident in 1993, her parents, William B. and Josephine P. Haynes of Newport, TN, her first daughter, Jessica and a brother, Charles Haynes. Survivors include her daughters, Margaret H. Allen of Roanoke and Elizabeth A. Rhymer of Freedom, N.H.; two grandchildren, Ellie and Mary Rhymer; brothers, William Haynes of Augusta, Ga., James Haynes of Nashville, Tenn., and Pat Haynes of Marietta, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Margaret Kamarck of Brewster, MA.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service and reception will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 4, 1997, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke. Daughters Margie and Elizabeth hope that all who loved Jo will come dressed to dance and join us after the service for a celebration and contradance in honor of a life joyfully and courageously lived. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Bethany Hall (1109 Franklin Rd., Roanoke, Va. 24016).
