HOT HOKIES EXTEND RUN TO 6 GAMES

Virginia Tech won its sixth consecutive baseball game with a 10-4 road victory over Appalachian State on Tuesday.

The Hokies (11-12) scored four runs in the middle three innings to take a 7-3 lead. Tech added three in the eighth on a home run by Matt Griswold.

Griswold finished the afternoon with four hits, including a career-high three doubles, and five RBI. Steve Schulze allowed four runs in six innings to earn his first victory of the season. John Anderson took the loss for the Mountaineers (10-19).

In other baseball:

Radford: The Highlanders held a four-run lead after three innings, then fought off a late rally for a 6-5 non-conference victory over James Madison in Harrisonburg.

Sophomore right fielder Matt Nowark went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead Radford (12-13). Jim Thomas added a pair of hits and two RBI. Highlanders starter Jason Anderson (Glenvar) evened his record at 4-4, tossing six-plus innings, scattering five hits and striking out four. JMU is 14-13.

VMI: Brian Sherlock drove in four runs, and Virginia scored five times in the third and fourth innings to bury the Keydets 13-3 in Lexington. Nate Shepperson and Scott Thompkins had a pair of hits each for VMI (8-19). Virginia is 19-9 after the non-conference victory.

LACROSSE

Radford men fall to Drexel

Jeff Innarino scored four goals to lead Drexel to a 14-7 road victory over Radford. The loss was the third straight for the Highlanders (2-5). Drexel is 3-2 after the non-conference win.

Radford, which outshot Drexel 35-31, was led by two goals each from B.J. Forte and Chris Karppala.

Tech women: Midfielder Meghan Mohler scored five goals to pace 12th-ranked North Carolina to a 15-3 victory over Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Dawn Will scored two goals for the Hokies (2-6). Tech freshman Courtney Hubbard's seven-game goal-scoring streak came to an end as the Tar Heels (7-1) limited her to one shot.

SOFTBALL

Radford gains split

Junior shortstop Melissa Pickel went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI and scored a run on a steal of home to help Radford to a 3-2 victory in the second game and a doubleheader split with Virginia in Radford.

The Cavaliers (7-7) won the first contest 2-1, with all three runs scoring in the final inning. Radford is 14-16.
