DALTON, Paul Edwin, 73, of Riner, passed away Monday, March 24, 1997, at Carilion Radford Community Hospital. There will be no visitation or funeral service. The body was cremated. Arrangements by Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.

DEAN, Isabelle Evers, 84, of Callaway, and formerly of New York, died Tuesday, March 25, 1997, at her home. She is survived by a daughter, Diane Lain, Callaway; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Nancy Speisser, Virginia Beach; one granddaughter, Gretchen Speisser; one brother, Lawrence Evers, New York; one sister, Maude Breen, New Jersey. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel, 2 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Bruce Robinson officiating. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Flora Funeral Servic e, South Main St., Rocky Mount.

ECKART, Edward Paul, 83, of Bedford, passed away Monday, March 24, 1997, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born July 4, 1913 in Bedford County, a son of the late Michael Eckart and Mary Hanning Eckart. He was a retired electrician, and was a member of the Bedford Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his wives, Sarah Frances Overstreet Eckart and Mary Forbes Eckart; a sister, Lena Lucas; and a brother, Arthur Eckart. He is survived by his present wife, Irene Callahan Eckart; two sons, Paul F. Eckart, Jerry R. Eckart, both of Bedford; a daughter, Bonnie L. Toms, Bedford; two sisters, Virginia E. Brown, Bedford, Bertha E. Wilkerson, Roanoke; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 27, 1997, at 2 p.m. from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, by the Rev. Richard Hedrick and Rev. Jerry Parr. Interment will follow in the Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford, and requests that those wishing to make memorials consider the Bedford Christian Church Building Fund.

JOHNSON, Darnell, 69, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, March 24, 1997. Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Allen and Brenda Lee Altis, both of Roanoke; two sons-in-law, Ron Altis and Thomas Allen; two aunts, Alfreda Wright and Elizabeth Martin; one uncle, Cohen Williams; three granddaughters, Kereth Bratoher, Margo Hamilton, and Kelly Altis; one grandson, Derek Bailey; nine great-grandchildren; a close friend, Gloria Dorma; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 28, 1997, 1 p.m., at Pilgrim Baptist Church with Rev. Dwight Steele officiating. Interment will follow in Williams Memorial Park. MARTIN, Elizabeth See, 91, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, March 25, 1997. She was a long time member of West End Presbyterian Church and was retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company after 40 years of service. She was the widow of Frank L. Martin. Surviving are a sister, Elise See Capito and husband, Jimmy, Roanoke; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 1997. The Rev. Ken Atkins will officiate.. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. Friends may call at Oakey's South Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

MATTHEWS, Robert L., (``Bob""), 78, of Buchanan, passed away Monday, March 24, 1997 in a Salem Hospital. During World War II, he served in the US Navy. He retired from James River Limestone Corp. Mr. Matthews was predeceased by a son, Bobby Arnold. Surviving are his wife, Josephine Noble Matthews; sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Hanah Matthews, Lewis and Peggy Matthews, Jack and Shirley Noble; a daughter, Linda Koenders; daughters and sons-in-law, Madge and E.W. Duncan, Muriel and Bill Garland, Michelle and Randy Sink; six granddaughters; nine grandsons; four great-granddaughters; and ten great-grandsons; two sisters, Gladys Reynolds and Faye Jones. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 1997 from Oakey's North Chapel. Minister W. Michael Whitaker and the Rev. Mike Woody will officiate. MEDLEY, Wendell Lee, 51, of New Castle, passed away Monday, March 24, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Harriet P. Medley, sons, Wendell Lee Medley Jr., Paul Jason Medley, daughter-in-law, Teresa Jacqueline Dudley, father and mother, Rex and Helen Medley, sisters, Jean Phillips, Connie Goad, Louella Crawford, brothers, Harold Medley, Kevin Medley. METZGER, Ellen Noreen, 72, of Radford, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 1997, in Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, N.C. She was a retired nurse's aide at St. Alban's Hospital. Survivors include three sons and a daughter-in-law, James B. Rodden and Herman Edwin Rodden, both of Monessen, Pa., and David Ray and Karen Rodden of Radford; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jane R. Jones of Radford, and Mary Anna and James Phillips of Spring Hilll, Fla.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Terry Allen and Glenna Berrman of Roanoke, and William F. Berrman Jr. of Lauderhill, Fla.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Eleanor Justeen and James R. Ford of Norfolk, and Lottie Amelia Leech of Newport News; 18 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 28, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home with Rev. William H. Jackson officiating. SLONE, Dorothy Phipps, 76, of Roanoke, died Monday, March 24, 1997, at home, following a long illness. She was born June 18, 1920, in Arlington, W.Va., to Arthur Bryan Phipps and Verneda Osborne Phipps. Her family moved to Arlington, W.Va. from Grayson Co., Va. and in 1928 moved to Welch, W.Va. She graduated from Welch High School in 1939. She managed the Thrifty Shop in Welch from 1958 to 1965 and worked for Moore's Lumber and Building Supplies in Roanoke. In May, 1940, she married John Edward Stater of Welch, W.Va., who was later a Roanoke County Deputy Sheriff and who preceded her in death. They were the parents of Patricia Anne Britton and Michael E. Stater, both of Roanoke. On January 29, 1983, she married Warren H. Slone of Roanoke, retired Hotel Roanoke Maintenance Superintendent. In addition to her husband and two children, she is survived by two sisters, Louise Marcum of Wytheville and June Morgan of Welch, W.Va.; two nieces, Barbara Evans of Vinton and Sandra Obenshain of Roanoke; two grandchildren, Keith Beumer and Jamie Vea Wampler, both of Blacksburg; stepchildren, Evie Lander and Mark Slone, both of Roanoke, Marian Yates of Pennsylvania; stepgreat-grandchildren, Beth and Scotty Gunter, Isaac and Eric Slone, all of Roanoke, Ashley and Monica Yates of Pennsylvania. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's South Chapel, 11 a.m., Thursday with the Rev. John Cochran officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Hospice. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's South Chapel.

STONE, Shirley Ann, 52, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, March 23, 1997. Survivors include her husband, Henry Stone; two sons, Henry (Hank) Stone Jr. and Keith Stone of Roanoke; one brother, McKinley Harvery Jr. (Carol) of Dublin; seven sisters, Jeanette L. Harvey, Ruby L. James, Janice M. Harvey, all of Radford, Treva Moore (Bob), and Hannah Jackson (Mark), both of Columbus, Ohio, Mildred Thompson (William), Collinsville, Carol Charleston (Byron), Washington, D.C.; a father-in-law, Harry F. Stone Sr.; two sisters-in-law, Letitia N. Loney, Cecelia M. Patterson; three brothers-in-law, Elder H. Fred Stone Jr., Wister L. Stone, both of Roanoke, and Robert A. Stone of Richmond. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 29, 1997, noon, at Jerusalem Baptist Church, with Elders Clinton Scott and Joseph Mayo officiating. Elder H. Fred Stone will bring the Eulogy. Interment will follow at Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral hour. SUTTON, Lawrence Purdy, (``Larry""), 86, of Covenant Towers, Myrtle Beach, S.C., die d Monday, March 24, 1997, at his residence. Mr. Sutton was born November 12, 1910, in Bath, N.Y., a son of the late Edwin and Bertha Van Scoter Sutton. He moved to the Myrtle Beach area in 1974 from Radford, Va., where he was a retired manager from Central Lumber Company. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech, past president of the Rotary Club in Radford, past president of the Virginia Building Materials Association, and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. He was the widower of Katherine W. Sutton and Jane Y. Sutton. Survivors include two sons, Larry Sutton Jr. of Saint Augustine, Fla., and John K. Sutton of Radford; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 1997, in the Magnolia Room at Covenant Towers, with the Rev. William Millar officiating. Memorials may be made to Covenant Towers Memorial Fund, 5001 Little River Road, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29577. McMillan-Small Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WOOLWINE, Lena Roberts, 83, of Abingdon, died Monday, March 24, 1997, at the Wellmont Hospice in Bristol. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County. She was a member of the Sinking Springs Presbyterian Church in Abingdon, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Circle Chairman, and as an Elder. She was a member of the Washington County Retired Teachers Association, the Booklovers Club, and the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Survivors include one son, Lewis G. Woolwine, Abingdon; one daughter, Jane Woolwine Rutledge, Beckley, W.Va.; six grandchildren, Sue Crotts, Carolyn Davenport, Jay Rutledge, Judd Rutledge, Jessica Rutledge, and John Lewis Rutledge; five great-grandchildren, Randi Griffin, Will Griffin, Adam Crotts, Katie Crotts, and Kailea Rutledge. Funeral services for Lena Roberts Woolwine will be conducted Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in Sinking Springs Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert Tolar Jr. and the Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park, Abingdon. Pallbearers will be Jay Rutledge, Judd Rutledge, John Lewis Rutledge, Sam Sullivan, Don Cumbow, Charlie Roberts, Paul Overbay, and C. E. Woolwine. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
