He wasn't wearing a life preserver or harness.
For five days, rescuers searched for a construction worker from Winchester who fell 50 feet from a Clarke County bridge into the Shenandoah River.
Several of Donnie Barrow's 11 brothers and sisters were there virtually the whole time, consumed by thoughts of how such a thing could happen to their brother.
The wait continued Wednesday as authorities suspended the search for Barrow, who fell from the Virginia 7 bridge Friday.
Barrow, 31, was working above the water without wearing a life preserver and without being secured by a safety harness, as required by state labor standards.
Barrow was in his first week of working for Associated Marjon Inc. of Ashland.
