CAVE SPRING WRESTLER FINISHES 2ND

Travis Carter of Roanoke placed second in the 140-pound novice division at the National Kids Folkstyle Wrestling Championships March 22-23 in Kansas City, Mo.

The event was the first of its kind sponsored by USA Wrestling, and featured more than 700 competitors from around the nation.

Carter is in his second year of wrestling with the Cave Spring Recreation Foundation.

Two Carter Center Aquatics Marlins competed at the U.S. Swimming Junior National Championships in Orlando, Fla., March 18-22.

Steve Cromer placed fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle event with a time of 15 minutes, 41.09 seconds. Trent Johnson was 13th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.27 seconds.

Several area swimmers have been named to the Virginia All-Star Team, and will compete at the 1997 Eastern Zone Short-Course Championships April 3-6 in Buffalo, N.Y.

Competing for the RVSI Gators will be Rudy Hohenstein, Greg DeMarco, Claire Wooddall-Gainey and Megan Read. For the Carter Center Aquatics Marlins, Andy Bauman, Lindsay Hock, Tommy Rappold, Jamie Trivett, Patrick O'Neill, Molly Henderson and Laura Dichtel will compete.

The Dell Curry Stars, a 15-under AAU basketball team from Roanoke, were champions of the Kingsport Invitational March 22-23 in Kingsport, Tenn.

The Stars cruised through the tournament with a record of 5-1, averaging 73 points per game. Team members are: Brent Dalton, John-Michael Deeds, Michael Hamler, Curt Heatherington, Mike Mitchell, Allen Naff, Chad Myers, Jason Underwood and Kellen Williams.

The South East Magic 14-under girls basketball team won the recent Shag Tournament held in Botetourt County. Team members are: Leslie Teeter, Jennifer Graham, Diane Quackenbush, Andrea Fisher, Meagan Altizer, Heather Stultz, Kim Murphy, Melody Crowe, Ashley Short, Brandy Crowe and Elizabeth Fenzel.
