Poplar Forest lectures

Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest has announced its spring lecture series.

The free lectures are held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evenings at the Holiday Inn Central on U.S. 29 in Lynchburg.

The following speakers are scheduled to appear:

April 9 - S. Allen Chambers, an architectural historian, speaks on " 'The Only Journies I Expect To Take': Jefferson's Travels in Central Virginia." Chambers' research of Jefferson documents related to Poplar Forest has shed light on the home's construction and Jefferson's life at his retreat home.

April 23 - George G. Shackelford, a Virginia Tech professor emeritus, speaks on "Jefferson's Travels in Europe." Shackelford, who has written several books about Jefferson, has traveled extensively in Europe and recently published a book about Jefferson's travels abroad.

May 7 - Peter S. Onuf, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation professor of history at the University of Virginia, speaks on "Jefferson's Geographic Imagination." Onuf has written extensively on the early republic. He was instrumental in organizing the 1993 Jeffersonian Legacies conference.

Noon lecture series

The Art Museum of Western Virginia and the NationsBank Noon Lecture Series will present critic and author, Jill Johnson on April 24 at the Lecture Hall, 20 E. Church Ave., second floor.

Johnson will provide insight into the life and work of Jasper Johns who, since the 1950s, has remained one of American art's most influential forces.

National Gallery director

Earl Powell III, director of the National Gallery of Art, will discuss his vision for the gallery in the 21st century. The Art Museum of Western Virginia and NationsBank Noon Lecture Series sponsors the informal lecture at the Lecture Hall, 20 E. Church Ave., second floor. For more information, please call 342-5760.

`Still-Life Photography'

The Art Museum of Western Virginia will conduct a ``Still-Life Photography'' workshop for ages 7-12 May 3, 12:30-1:30. Tuition is $5. All materials are provided. Please call 342-5762 for more information.

`Whimsical Vehicles'

The Art Museum of Western Virginia offers ``Whimsical Vehicles'' workshop for ages 5-12 on April 19, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Children create a toy vehicle using boxes, paint and bottle caps. Tuition is $5. All materials are provided.

`Puppet Faces' workshop

The Art Museum of Western Virginia offers ``Puppet Faces,'' a workshop about using tag board and string to create a hand-manipulated puppet face with moveable parts. It will be held on Saturday, April 12, 12:30-1:30 p.m. for ages 4-12. Tuition is $5. All materials are provided.

Summer China Institute

EMORY - For three weeks this summer, college students will get a chance to travel and study in China as participants in Emory & Henry College's Summer China Institute.

The application deadline is April 4. Forms can be obtained from Samir N. Saliba, director of the Center for International Studies at Emory & Henry College, P.O. Box 947, Emory, Va. 24327.

The program will run from June 10 to July 1, starting with a two-week study of Chinese history, culture and society on campus by the China Tourism Management Institute.

The following week will be spent traveling in Beijing to site such as the Great Wall, Imperial Palace, Summer Palace, Beijing University and the Temple of Heaven.

The program will allow students to earn three college credits. The estimated cost per student is $2,975, which would include room, meals, travel and tuition. Part of the fee will be waived for those not seeking college credit.

Southern way of religion

EMORY - John B. Boles, professor of history at Rice University and managing editor of the Journal of Southern History, will speak on "The Southern Way of Religion" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Emory & Henry College.

The lecture in Memorial Chapel is free to the public. It is the last of the 1996-97 Bays Blackwell Lecture Series focusing this year on "Law, Religion and Politics in National and Global Perspectives."

Boles, who has written several books, will focus on how a certain cast of religious thought and experience has influenced Southern history from the mid-18th century to the present.
