VIRGINIA CLEARED OF WRONGDOING

Virginia will not receive sanctions for its recruiting of All-Group AAA running back Antoine Womack, Womack's mother said Thursday night.

Ella Womack said she hopes to know by this afternoon whether her son, from Phoebus High School in Hampton, will play football at Penn State or Virginia.

``The NCAA contacted Virginia today,'' she said Thursday, ``and Virginia contacted Antoine. Everything was OK. There was a little minor something, but nothing on Antoine's part.''

Womack originally committed to Penn State in January, but came close to signing with UVa on national letter-of-intent day, Feb.5. He delayed his decision after anonymous calls and letters warned of possible recruiting violations.

Virginia subsequently asked the NCAA to intervene. Womack, who has met NCAA guidelines for freshman eligibility, was rated the No.1 prospect in Virginia by The Roanoke Times.

Hokies rip Highlanders

Virginia Tech slapped 13 hits and capitalized on seven Radford errors to beat the Highlanders 11-2 at Dedmon Center Park.

The Hokies (13-12) got home runs from Chad Foutz (Franklin County) and Eric Shifflett in notching their eighth straight victory.

Tech took advantage of four Radford errors in the third inning to push across five runs and chase Highlanders starter Foster Ridpath (Radford High). The big blow was a three-run homer by Shifflett.

Kelly Dampeer (Northside) went 3-for-3 with a solo home run for the Highlanders (12-15).

Foutz went 3-for-5 and added a two-run homer in the eighth for the Hokies.

Ferrum: The Panthers (15-2), who scored 29 runs in Wednesday's victory, capped a two-day binge with a 22-11 drubbing of visiting St.Mary's (Minn.).

Riley Hodges and Pat Daly each had a three-run homer and Sharron Braxton had a two-run shot in the seventh. Chuck Jarrett was 4-for-6 with four RBI.

VMI: Dale Mooney's grand slam keyed a eight-run fifth inning that carried the Keydets past Le Moyne 16-10 in Lexington.

Ben Bradford smacked a pair of homers while Scott Tompkins his team-high 10th for VMI (9-18). Read Parker picked up his first college victory.
