ALMOND, Larmie Goad, 86, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, March 27, 1997 in a Roanoke convalescent center. She was the widow of James Edward Almond and predeceased by a stepson, Bobby Almond. Mrs. Almond was a former employee of Rainbo Bakery. Surviving are a stepson and his wife, Billy and June Almond, Blacksburg; a brother and his wife, Austin and Ida Goad, Floyd; a sister, Agnes Blizzard; a sister and brother-in-law, Clara and Harry Clement, all of Mount Airy, N.C.; special nephews and wives, Ray Ayers, Bobby and Phyllis Ayers, Nelson and Peggy Ayers, all of Roanoke; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 1997 in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Stewart Kelly will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Oakey's North Chapel.

AUST, Foy, 87, of Draper, died Wednesday night, March 26, 1997, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was the son of the late William Norman Aust and Lucy Southern Aust, and was preceded in death by his eleven brothers and sisters. A graduate of Pulaski High School, Mr. Aust attended the College of William and Mary and graduated from Radford State Teachers College. He served as assistant principal, and as a teacher at Pulaski High School for 16 years. He was also a real estate broker and developer in Pulaski County for more than 40 years. As a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 60 years, he served on numerous church committees. Mr. Aust was the founder of the Pulaski Boy's Club, which he operated for nine years. He was a charter member of the Pulaski Lion's Club, a long-time member of the Pulaski Elk's Lodge, and served on the advisory board of the Pulaski Salvation Army. Surviving are his wife, Mildred Brockmeyer Aust, of more than 60 years, Draper; son and daughter-in-law, Milton N. and Brenda B. Aust, Draper, Myron R. and Dianne H. Aust, Pulaski; daughter, Melanie M. Aust, Draper; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 30, 1997, at 3 p.m. from the Trinity Lutheran Church, Pulaski, with the Rev. Terrie L. Sternberg officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery. BEARD, Sherryl Lynn, 38, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, March 27, 1997. She is survived by her husband, Samuel M. Beard; son, Daniel K. Beard; step daughters, Jessica Lynn Beard and Charla Marie Beard; her father, Otto L. Jervis; her brother, Darryl Jervis; her step sister, Diane Royals; her nieces, Jessica (Suz) Jervis, Lisa Lundy, Dawn Royals; her nephew, Chris Jervis. BELL, Richard Mahlon, 61, of 10 Alexander Drive, #612, Asheville, N.C., died Thursday, March 27, 1997, at his home. A native of Austinville, Va., he was a son of the late Roy Glenn and Rose Rhudy Bell. He obtained a bachelors degree from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbia, S.C., and received a masters degree in history from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He was a retired high school teacher and college professor, and the inventor of the Calendrical System. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife, Annette Woody Bell; sons, Andrew Thad Bell of Raleigh, N.C. and Nicholas Richard Bell of Marshall, N.C.; and brothers, David Randolph Bell of Dallas, Texas, and Roy Rhudy Bell of Tampa, Fla. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church, Asheville, N.C., with the Reverend Father William Edwards and the Reverend Jane Smith officiating. BOTTOMS, Stanley Delando Jr., 45, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 1997. He was preceded in death by grandfathers, Norman S. COUNTS, Leah Carol Bigglestone, 42, of Wytheville, has gone home to be with the Lord on Thursday March 27, 1997. She was a member of the Stage Road Chapel and served with the St. Paul Pre-School for ten years, between 1986 and 1996, and director for six years. She loved doing this very much. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Markley Grady Bigglestone; and mother-in-law, June Hicks Counts. She is survived by her beloved husband and children, Dennis Reed Counts Jr., Mary Markley Counts, age 15, Molly Preston Counts, age 13, William ``Willy'' Halsey Counts, age 10; her father and stepmother, William Edward and Kay W. Bigglestone of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Mark E. Bigglestone of Tucson, Ariz.; father-in-law, Dennis Reed Counts Sr. of Wytheville. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 29, 1997, at 3 p.m. at the Stage Road Chapel in Wytheville with lay speaker Alan Walters, the Rev. Dr. Charles Burnett, and Pastor Greg Dill officiating. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. DICKERSON, Edgar J. Jr., 76, of Salem, formerly of Floyd, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in a Salem hospital. He was a World War II veteran. Surviving are his wife, Lottie Dickerson, Salem; four sisters, Vera Mae Cannaday, Laura Catherine Sowers, Annie Lee McPeak, Floyd, Mary Ruth Barton, Fieldale. FARMER, Mary Edith Chinault, 80, of Pulaski, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in the Pulaski Health Care Center, Pulaski. She was the daughter of the late James L. and Willia Linkous Chinault. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence T. Farmer Sr.; by a son, R. Gary Farmer; and by three brothers, W. Cecil Chinault, Louis A. Chinault, and Harry Chinault. Surviving are a son, C. Thomas Farmer Jr., Pulaski; brother, James R. Chinault, Chestertown, Md.; a sister, Flora C. Denham, Radford; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. GIBSON, Jack C., 77, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday afternoon, March 26, 1997. He was a Naval veteran of World War II; and is survived by his wife, Pauline C. Gibson; a son, James C. Gibson, Roanoke; two daughters, Margaret Gibson Loyd, Amissville, Va., Paula Gibson Ellis, San Diego, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; three sisters, Helen Carter, Lois Thomas, Nelcine Dowdy, all of Roanoke; and a brother-in-law, James Nininger, Salem. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with Pastor John Kohler and Jesse Powell, Pastor Emeritus officiating. JAMES, Ernestine Dix, (``Johnny''), 73, of Wytheville, died Thursday, March 27, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Robert Harlow and Stella King Dix. She was retired from the Department of Agriculture Consumer Service, and was a member of the West End United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Wiley James Sr. of Wytheville; sons and daughters-in-law, Wiley Jr. ``Sam'' and Peggy S. James of Wytheville, R. P. and Diane James of Herndon; grandsons and spouses, Bobby and Teresa James, Stephen and Becki James, all of Bristol; great-granddaughter, Lauren James of Bristol; sisters, Charlotte D. Cook, Lucille D. Gilbert, both of Wytheville; two sisters-in-law, Bertha Dix of Wytheville, Cora Ross of Trout Dale. Several nieces and nephews also survive. JARVIS, Edna Crigger, 69, of Route 1, Rural Retreat, died early Thursday, March 27, 1997, at her residence. She was born in Sugar Grove, the daughter of the late Edward Crigger and Lillie Bonham Crigger Fulton. Mrs. Jarvis was a member of the Sharon Baptist Church in Rural Retreat, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for a number of years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Bealie (C.B.) Jarvis Jr.; one brother, Otis Crigger; and one daughter-in-law, Shirley Jarvis. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Bob Kell, Pam and Henry Corvin, all of Rural Retreat; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Jarvis, Larry and Debbie Jarvis, Doug and Judy Jarvis, all of Rural Retreat; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Luticia and Millard Strunk of Harvard, Idaho, and Winnie and Howard Keyes of Penns Grove, N.J. John was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and business associate, who is survived by his wife, Anna B. (Ann) Lafferty; his daughters and son-in-law, Kellie A. Lafferty, Karen L. and Donald N. Zimmerman, all of Vinton; his son and daughter-in-law, John Keith and Cathy C. LAW, Harriett Sue Croson, (``Lovely""), 74, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, March 24, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everette Leon Law. Those left to cherish her memories are two daughters and one son-in-law, Constance and Silas Bond Jr., Fort Washington, Md.., Joan ``Buck"" Law, Roanoke; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Ralph (Evelyn) Croson, Roanoke; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. MARTIN, William Arthur, (``Colonel USAF, retired""), of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, March 27, 1997. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas and Luella Chapman Martin; and wife, Dorothy Grayson Martin. Surviving is his sister, Marguerite Martin Bradley. The highlight of his life was the day he gave his life to God. He was baptized on December 16, 1923 by the Rev. J. Harry Smith at West End United Methodist Church. A faithful member all his life, he served more than 20 years on the Staff/Parish Committee and Finance Committee, of which he was chairman for 12 years. Col. Martin was a member of the Roanoke Chapter Retired Officers Association, Roanoke Chapter 285 Air Force Association, National Railroad Historical Society, Roanoke Chapter 111 National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Norfolk and Western Historical Society, C&O Railroad Historical Society, Fincastle Rifles, American Legion Post No. 3, Lakeland Masonic Lodge No. 190 AF & AM, Electa Chapter No. 33 of Eastern Star, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3, Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1264 Roanoke Chapter, Nights of Pythias Lodge No. 47, Nights of Khorassan Rhaah No. 195, League of Older Americans, AARP, Virginia Mus eum of Transportation, and BPOE USA Roanoke Lodge No. 197. POE, Joseph Frank, 71, of Galax, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997 in Twin County Regional Hospital. Mr. Poe was born in Virginia on August 18, 1925 to Ken Poe and Susan Laura Phipps Poe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mallie Berniece Poe. He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Mary and Jim Spivey, Elizabeth Poe , all of Galax; six grandchildren, James Spivey, III, Amanda Spivey, Laura Spivey, Eric Lineberry, all of Galax, Ben Spivey and Phillip Lineberry, both of Hillsville. SMART, Ethel Gilmore, 94, of Radford, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997 in a Radford hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph H. Smart, Sr. and a daughter, Dorleen Roop. Surviving are seven daughters, Lucille Wilson, Frances Slate, Dorothy McCoy, Melita Boyd, June Dobbins and Dolly Hedge, all of Radford, Shirley Crabtree, Bluefield, Va.; three sons, Robert L. Smart, Joseph H. Smart, Jr. and Elwood C. Smart, all of Radford ; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survives. SMITH, Charles Edward, 71, of Roanoke, died at home, Wednesday, March 26, 1997. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and continued in a long and fulfilling military career, serving in the United States Air Force for 23 years. Mr. Smith retired with the rank of M-Sgt. He was a devoted family man who loved his role as father. His earthy pragmatism, his wit and wisdom, his gentle and caring nature is part of our very fiber and will ever grace our path in life. SOWERS, Joseph Chymer, 83, of Christiansburg, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 1997, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. STANLEY, Edgar M., 69, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, March 27, 1997. He was a member of Hollins Road Baptist Church. Mr. Stanley was a U. S. Army veteran of WWII. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola E. Stanley, brother, Joseph Stanley. He is survived by a son, Barry J. Stanley; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy L. and Ben Martin, Jill Martin, Sandra S. and Thomas Dickerson; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Ann Greer, Elline Shifflett; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 1997 at Oakey's North Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Greene officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Union Cemetery, Botetourt County. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Oakey's North Chapel.

STUMP, Dewey Roosevelt, 82, of Roanoke, died Thursday, March 27, 1997. He had worked at Norfork & Western Railroad for many years and went on to work and retire as a Food Service Manager. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor B. Stum p. Survivors include his daughter, Carol S. McConnell, Greensboro, N.C.; his sons, Kenny B. Stump and David L. Stump, Greensboro, N.C.; grandchildren, Jack and Julie McConnell, Brad and Katie Stump; brothers and sisters-in-laws, James Sylvester and Florence Stump, Howard Lewis and Christine Stump, Sanford Wayne and Jean Stump. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 29, 1997 at 12 o'clock at the Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Rev. Kirk A. Ballin officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, at the John M. TURNER, Alma Frances Webster, 97, of St. George, Utah, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in St. George. She was born February 25, 1900, in Roanoke, Va., to Thomas Jefferson and Julia Stevens Unrue Webster. Survivors include two sons, Lester C. Turner and Albert F. Turner, both of Roanoke; a daughter, Javotte (``Jo"") Turner of St. George; six grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in deat h by two children, Juanita Turner and Arlen T. Turner. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 31, 1997, at Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 300 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and 11 to 11:45 a.m. Monday prior to services. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery under the direction of the Metcalf Mortuary

WELLS, William G. Sr., 85, prominent Roanoke Valley architect and lifelong resident of Salem, died Thursday, March 27, 1997. He was the son of J. Gordon and Hattie Wolfenden Wells. He was a founding partner of Wells and Meagher, a Roanoke architectural firm, responsible for design of many notable buildings including the Salem Civic Center, the Catawba Hospital, Cave Spring High School, William Ruffner Junior High School and many other federal, state and local projects. He retired from active architectural practice in 1993. He was a 1934 graduated of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation. During World War II, he served with the Army Corps of Engineers and was the Assistant District Engineer at Oak Ridge, Tenn., during the final year of the production of chemicals for the first atomic bomb. In late 1945 and early 1946, he served on the Strategic Bombing Survey of Japan to provide a first-hand assessment of structural damage caused by the first atomic devices. Mr. Wells remained in the Army Reserves until 1962, ultimately reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was active in his professional and civic community throughout his life. He served on the Salem City Planning Commission, was president of the Salem Historical Society, vice president of the Virginia Society-American Institute of Architects, a member of the Roanoke Kiwanis Club and a vestryma n at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. In the late 1950s, he ran unsuccessfully for a Salem Town Council seat. He is survived by two sons, W. Gordon Wells of Richmond and Joseph E. Wells of Reston; a daughter, Elizabeth W. Poindexter of Glouster, N.C., and five grandchildren. His wife, Laura Elizabeth Bame Wells, predeceased him in 1991. Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Dr. Robert T. Copenhaver officiating. The family will receive friends at John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home in Salem from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 28. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 42 East Main Street, Salem, Va. 24153.
