BOWMAN, Herman Daniel 85, of Roanoke, passed away March 27, 1997, after several years of declining health and a brief stay in the hospital. His wife of 55 years, Agnes Sprenger Bowman, was with him. Mr. Bowman was born in Franklin County at Dillons Mill to Daniel Cleveland Bowman and Zeda Montgomery Bowman. After his mother's death when he was a boy, he was raised by his stepmother, Bessie Cummings Bowman, and grew up with brothers Raymond and Carl Bowman, and sisters Gertrude Prillaman and the late Mable Bowman. Educated in Franklin County, and graduated from Daleville Academy in 1930, Herman later attended George Williams College in Chicago and the University of Pittsburgh. After serving in the Army Air Force in England during World War II, he pursued a career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture until his retirement as a District Director for Stabilization and Conservation Services in 1970. Mr. Bowman resided in Culpeper, Va., with his wife and sons, Paul, now of Baltimore, Md., and David, now of Richmond, until his return to Brandon Oaks Retirement Community in Roanoke in 1993. He is also survived by seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Funeral Home, Downtown, at 12 noon Monday, March 31, with burial following at Fair View Cemetery. The Rev. Lucinda Barnum-Steggerda of Central Brethren Church and the Rev. Bur t Browning of Huguenot Baptist Church in Richmond will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

CRAFT, Sadie Bell, who would have been 90 on her birthday on May 18, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 29, 1997. She was a member of Penn Forest Church of God, and was very active in the League of Older Americans. She was the widow of Frank G. Craft. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Gladys Fulcher Goldstein and Leonard Goldstein of Roanoke; two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank Arthur Craft Sr. and Mary Craft of Augusta, Ga., and Roger Lee Craft and Siney Craft of Buckingham County; six grandchildren, including Julian (``Jay"") Fulcher III, who made his home with his grandmother; 11 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Minnie Payne of Tampa, Fla. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 31, 1997, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Sam D. Belisle officiating. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. Monday in Mulberry Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Buckingham County. Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel after 12:30 p.m. Sunday, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m.

CREBER, David John, 68, of Charlottesville, died Friday, March 28, 1997, in a local hospital. He was born October 1, 1928, in London, England. He is survived by his wife, Joyce S. Creber of Charlottesville; a daughter, Susan Salg and her husband, Robert of Marietta, Ga.; a son, Bruce Creber of Hauppauge, N.Y., and a sister, Joan Patricia Burton of Kent, England. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to University of Virginia Cardiology Research Center, #158, University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va. 22908. DeWEESE, Wilbert Ernest, 78, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord Friday, March 28, 1997. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He retired from Meadow Gold Dairy after 45 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Aileen Wilson DeWeese; three sisters, Euna Clingenpeel, Ina Whitlock, and Nettie Whitlock all of Roanoke; number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 1997 from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. Frank Wimmer and the Rev. Paul Alwine will officiate. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. DICKINSON, Doris Saunders Garrett, of Rocky Mount, died Friday, March 28, 1997. Born on Main Street in Rocky Mount November 25, 1914, she spent her life talking about the town and its people. Mrs. Dickinson was the widow of Richard Pendleton Dickinson. Through her own and her husband's family and because of her great gregariousness, she had intimate and wide knowledge of many years of the history of Rocky Mount and Franklin County. In the columns she wrote for 15 years for both county newspapers. She communicated her fascination with everything of local interest. Her love for the town of Rocky Mount was close to her faith in her religion, and she was a life long communicant of Trinity Episcopal Church. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Dickinson Rupp of Alexandria, Va.; her son, Richard Taliaferro Dickinson of New York; her granddaughters, Elizabeth and Sarah Rupp; her sister, Caroline Norman, Chatham, Va.; her brothers, William Garrett of Baltimore, Md., John Reginald and Peter Dillard Garrett both of Rocky Mount; her stepdaughter and cousin, Anne Nelson Joyce of New Jersey. Her elder son, Robert Carter Dickinson died in 1961. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 31, 1997 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Rocky Mount with Rector Karin Howard Lindsey and the Rev. Van T. Renick officiating. GORDON, Ellis Oliver, 84, of Christiansburg, died Friday, March 28, 1997 at Radford Hospital. He worked many years in construction as a carpenter and is survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends. GRIFFITH, Sylvia Eanes 83, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, March 29, 1997,at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Palmer L. Griffith, Sr. and was also preceded in death by t wo sons, L.L. ""Red"" Griffith and Robert A. ""Bob"" Griffith. Surviving are two sons and daughters-n-law, P.L. Jr. (Dude) and Jackie Griffith of Christiansburg, J. Michael and Terry Lynn Griffith of Staunton; two sisters, Blanche Boyd, Powhatan, Va. and Mildred Lane, Christiansburg; nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday from the Christiansburg Church of Christ, conducted by Mr. Tom Hodge, with interment in Sunset Cemetery. MARTIN, Edna Mae, 67, of 202 College St., Martinsville, died Friday, March 28, 1997 at Memorial Hospital in Henry County. She was born March 11, 1930 at Snow Creek a daughter of the late Arthur C. Martin and Annie Brodie Martin. She was retired from Crestar Bank with 40 ye ars service and a member of the Snow Creek Christian Church. Survivors include her sisters, Margaret M. Clark, Warrensville, Ill., Edith B. Martin, Martinsville, Rebecca M. Alley, Collinsville; brother, Arthur C. Martin, Martinsville; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, at Snow Creek Christian Church with the Rev. Berlin Hanks and the Rev. Jim Compton officiating. MUSE, Lois Webb, 78, of Roanoke, died Saturday, March 29, 1997 in a Salem hospital. She was preceded in death by husband, Raymond Muse and her parents, Dorsie White Webb and Edna Layman Webb. Mrs. Muse was a member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Elbert Mitchell; a granddaughter and her husband, Debbie Thurman and Bill all of Roanoke; two grandsons, Johnny Mitchell of Roanoke, and Ronnie Mitchell of Vinton; two great-grand children, Whitney Thurman and Travis Thurman; a brother and his wife, Ambler and Jean Webb of Roanoke; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Marie Webb and Glenvar Layman and Louise Webb Tuck all of Roanoke. PRICE, Hilda Custer, 75, of Roanoke, died Friday, March 28, 1997. She was a former executive secretary for the Roanoke Chapter of the American Red Cr oss, had been a secretary for the League of Older Americans, and had served as a volunteer at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Dr. Daniel Jenkins of Williamsburg; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Priscilla Price of Naples, Fla.; three grandsons, Todd Jenkins and Jonathan Jenkins of Williamsburg and Taylor Price of Naples, Fla.; three stepgranddaughters, Paige Hinst of Tampa, Fla., Tara Lipsky of Norfolk and Jori Standridge of Naples, Fla., and other family members, David Parrish, Maryann Sallee, Martha Critzer and Ronald Parrish, all of Roanoke. She is also survived by her closest friend, Lois Bryant of Roanoke. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 31, 1997, in Evergreen Burial Park, with the Rev. William E. RAU, Gertrude A., 96, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, March 27, 1997. She was a native of Wilwaukee,Wis. and a former resident of New Jersey. Mrs. Rau was the widow of Harold W. Rau. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Jeanette Anderson, Tempe, Ariz.; a niece, Shirley J. Lynn; and a nephew, Jim Anderson. It is suggest that memorials be made to St. Andrew's Catholic Church. RUBLE, Walter Earl, 83, of Roanoke, died Saturday morning, March 29, 1997. Retired Chairman of the Board of Rainbo Bread Company, he spent 54 years in the bakery business. Starting at age 14 while at Lee Junior High School, he worked in production for six years. He then moved into sales, and was sales manager for 17 years. He was president and manager for 22 years, and retired as Chairman of the Board in 1984. Mr. Ruble was an Elder at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Lakeland Lodge A.F.&A.M., Scottish Rites, Kazim Temple of Shrine and Roanoke Lions Club. He was also a member of Hidden Valley Country Club, the Virginia Bakers Council, the Advisory Board of Dominion Bank, the Chamber of Commerce and the Roanoke Area Manufacturers Association. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Juanita Webster Ruble; two children and their spouses, Nancy and Jack Perry III, and Richard and Pam Ruble, all of Lynchburg; six grandchildren, Cindy and Charles Fisher of Nantucket, Mass., Carolyn (``Kitty"") and Skip Hudson, and John B. IV and Dawn Perry, all of Lynchburg, Amy and David Sanderlin, and Gwendolyn and Shelton King, all of Richmond, and Richard E. Ruble Jr. of Lynchburg; two great-grandchildren, Charles Alexander Fisher and Jessica Paige King; a sister, Elta R. Hayden of Roanoke, and dear family friends, Carol and Jack McKenna and their family, Angie Martin, and Amy and Chris Hodges. UPDIKE, Edna Martin, 79, of Huddleston, passed away Friday, March 28, 1997, in the Autumn Care Nursing Home. She was born April 18, 1917, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late W. A. Martin and Hessi Burnette Martin. She was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of Huddleston United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, S. Rucke r Updike; two daughters and sons-in-law, Edna and Russell Morgan, and Mary Kay and R. B. Hancock, all of Huddleston; a grandson, Robbie Hancock of Huddleston, and a sister Esther Padgett of Winston-Salem, N.C. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 31, 1997, in Greenwood Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Carl H. Douglass Jr. and the Rev. Sam Caldwell.
