Two other young men face charges in the incident, which occurred Saturday night at the Quality Inn on Orange Avenue.
A Northwest Roanoke man was charged with attempted murder in the shooting of a hotel manager Saturday night.
Danny Doc Zongken, 23, of Northwood Drive was also charged with four counts of attempted malicious wounding.
Roanoke police gave the following account:
Police found Stanley Malcolm Hodgdon Sr., 45, the manager of the Quality Inn on Orange Avenue, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head about 8:15 Saturday night.
He told police he was standing on the second-floor balcony of the hotel with some friends when they heard gunfire. The group saw a man, who they thought was possibly a guest at a wedding reception being held at the hotel, holding a gun and pointing it up at them.
Hodgdon told the man to put the gun down, but witnesses said he told them to go back to their rooms or he would shoot them. The man then fired one round.
The manager ran downstairs and told the man to leave, but the man pointed the gun at him and fired. Hodgdon was struck on the right side of the head near his hairline.
Two other men then began beating the wounded Hodgdon.
The gunman dropped his weapon during the fight, and one of his cohorts tossed it over a fence. Police recovered it.
The three men fled in a car. Hodgdon identified three men who were found in a car in the 4300 block of Plantation Road Northeast as his attackers.
Police found a black canvas holster stained with blood, and the clothing of all three men was bloodstained.
Zongken is being held in the Roanoke City Jail without bond.
Tran Thanh Van, 18, of Indian Village public housing development was charged with assault and battery. He was not in custody Sunday night.
A 17-year-old boy will also be charged in connection with the attack, police said.
Hodgdon was treated by rescue workers and at a local hospital, police said.
