AAU TEAM RUNNER-UP IN STATE PLAY

The Roanoke Hawks boys AAU under-17 basketball team finished second in the state championships Sunday, earning the squad a trip to the national championships July 20-26 in Orlando, Fla.

The Hawks dropped the championship game to Virginia Select, 92-80. GW-Danville's Charles Stevens led Select with 27 points in the finale. Patrick Henry's Devon "Boo" Battle led Roanoke with 19 points. Raymond Arrington (Liberty) added 17.

Roanoke advanced to the title game with a semifinal overtime victory over Boo Williams Gold, 89-86, and a 74-61 quarterfinal win over Richmond Gold.

Tech loses in ninth|

Adam Correa belted a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to lift Massachusetts to a 4-2 victory over Virginia Tech in an Atlantic 10 Conference baseball game Sunday in Blacksburg.

The Minutemen (9-4, 2-1) took two of three games from the Hokies (14-14, 4-2).

Tech starter John Hand (2-5) yielded just one second-inning run before getting into trouble in the ninth. After Hand struck out pinch hitter Bryan Mazzaferro to lead off the ninth, he yielded a single to David Giglio and an infield hit to Brad Gorrie before surrendering Correa's first homer of the year.

Tech took a 2-1 lead in the second on an RBI double by Matt Reynolds (William Byrd) and a run-scoring single from Ryan Brittle (Radford). Hand struck out 10.

Radford: Third baseman Steve Mokan smacked three homers and drove in nine runs to propel UNC Greensboro to a 12-5 victory over Radford, completing a three-game Big South Conference sweep of the Highlanders in Radford.

Mokan hit a three-run homer in the first off left-hander Jason Anderson (Glenvar), added a three-run blast in the fifth and belted a ninth-inning grand slam off Jeff Bazow.

Anderson (4-5) surrendered 10 runs (nine earned) and 11 hits in 82/3 innings and fanned seven. Mike Lombardi had two hits, including a solo homer for Radford (12-18, 1-5), which has lost five straight. The Spartans are 24-6, 6-0.

VMI: Ryan Butler was 4-for-5 with a homer and The Citadel banged out 11 extra-base hits in a 19-10 pounding of VMI in a Southern Conference game in Charleston, S.C.

The Citadel (25-12, 12-5) broke open an 8-5 game with an eight-run sixth inning. Franco Martin was 5-for-5 with a double and three RBI for the Keydets (10-21, 5-7).

Ferrum: Riley Hodges (Franklin County), Greg Stubblefield and Sharron Braxton homered in the Panthers' 13-6 Dixie Conference victory in Ferrum.

Hodges and Braxton had three hits, as did Brian Goodrich. Stubblefield blasted a three-run shot in the second inning and Braxton sparked a four-run eighth with a three-run shot for Ferrum (17-3, 6-1). Jermaine Fletcher (6-1) scattered 10 hits and allowed six runs in 71/3 innings for the Panthers. Shenandoah is 9-10, 4-4.
