A CROSS-STITCH A DAY KEEPS STIR CRAZINESS AWAY

Don't let the tattoo fool you, Dean Gordon is one of the best needleworkers around.

The Christiansburg resident has won the Christiansburg Parks and Recreation counted cross-stitch competition two years in a row and has another great entry for this year's exhibit.

The parks department holds a needlework exhibit every year for anyone 18 and over. Categories include crocheting, knitting and candlewicking.

But Gordon focuses on counted cross-stitch, a talent he picked up in Mexico. He says he got restless watching television in Spanish and needed something to do.

"My wife got me started in [cross-stitch] to keep me from going stir-crazy."

Now that he's back in the United States with TV shows in English, he still finds the needlework more interesting. Every once in a while, he admits, he'll look up to see what's happening on television.

This year's entry took about three months to finish, he says, but next year's entry will be much bigger and may take the better part of the year to create.

Dean's work has proved to be popular, as shown by the two People's Choice awards he has won. Visitors to the exhibit cast votes and pick a winner in each category.

This year's exhibit will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 19 at the Christiansburg National Guard Armory. Admission is $1. Registration for the exhibition is open until April 7. For more information, call 382-8173.
