ADKINS, Jim Henry, 79, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, March 31, 1997. He was born in Pittsylvania County, Va., the son of the late Archie W. and Clara F. Adkins. He was married to Delphine Hairston Adkins, who preceded him in death. Of this union their were seven children (six born of the marriage and one adopted). Barbara Reynolds Cobbs and one great-grandchild preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn six children, Cecelia A. Childress, Annie B. (Barry) Gray, Elder Joe H. (Susie) Adkins, Shirley B. (Johnny) Neal, Brenda I. (Harvey) Davis and Michael J. Hairston, all of Roanoke; seven sisters and brothers, Leonard (Jean) Adkins, Annie Toller, Mattie (June) Swanson, Dorothy Toller, Frank (Mable) Adkins, Lillie Stockton and Ineze (Elmo) Parchment; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Thursday, April 3, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel, with the Rev. Lee Lewis officiating. Interment in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 2, 1997 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel.

BEAMER, Glenn C., 72, of Fancy Gap, passed away Monday, March 31, 1997, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mt. Airy, N.C. He was born in Carroll County on October 3, 1924. Surviving are his wife, Betty Beamer of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Gayle Beamer of Charlottesville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Don Smith, and Brenda and Dale Moore of Hillsville, and a brother, Rhudy Beamer of Mt. Airy, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 1997, at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, with interment in the Beamer Cemetery. CRALEY, Dessie Duncan, 69, of Dallastown, Pa., passed away Saturday, March 29, 1997. She was preceded in death by a grandson, William Henry, in October 1992. She is survived by her husband, Elwood C. Craley, Dallastown, Pa.; one son, Larry Craley, York, Pa.; three daughters, Lillian Huffman, Mt. Crawf ord, Va., Patricia A. DAVIS, L. Glenn, 64, of Roanoke, formerly of Salem, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 1997. He was a long-time employee of Cummings/Atlantic Inc. as a diesel mechanic. He is survived by his son, Gary Davis; daughter and son-in-law, Lesa and John Meadows; grandchildren, Alesha and Haley Meadows; special companion, Sue Davis; brother and sister-in-law, Clifford and Jean Davis, and sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Charles Faries, and Peggy and Bruce Wygal. DEISHER, Bernard C., 83, of Eagle Rock, died Tuesday, April 1, 1997 at his home. Mr. Deisher was a retired conductor for the C & O Railroad, a member of the Eagle Rock United Methodist Church, Catawba Masonic Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Eagle Rock Rescue Squad, Eagle Rock Fire Department and the Eagle Rock Ruritan Club. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Smith Deisher; and his daughter, Elizabeth D eisher, both of Eagle Rock. Funeral services will be Thursday, April 3, 1997, at 3 p.m., conducted by the Rev. EDWARDS, Daniel Edsel, Jr., 33, of 7476 Grassland Drive, Sandy Level, died Tuesday, April 1, 1997. Born May 3, 1963 in Danville, Va., he is a son of Daniel Edsel Edwards, Sr. and Merle Anderson Edwards, both of Sandy Level. Daniel was a graduate of Gretna Senior High School and a member of Penhook United Methodist Church. He was an employee with Spun Fibers in Collinsville until he became disabled. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Constance ``Connie"" Edwards, of Roanoke. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Cool Branch Rescue Squad, Penhook, Va. 24137 or our favorite charity. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, April 4, 1997, at Penhook United Methodist Church, by Pastors Betty D. Marshall and Pastor Wayne Grinnell. ENGLISH, Edna Burdette, of Rt. 4, Moneta, died Sunday, March 30 , 1997 in the Raleigh Court Nursing Care Center in Roanoke, Va. She was the daughter of the late Elder and Mrs. John Burdette and was the widow of the late Levi English. She is survived by four daughters, Katherine English, Gracie Williams and husband, Thomas, Lee Birta Nicholson and Marie Scott, all of Roanoke; nine sons, Daniel English of East Orange, N.J., Ben English and wife, Margaret, Ronnie English, Henry English and Edward English, all of Roanoke, James English and Wayne English, both of Moneta, Melvin English and wife, Mary and Gary English and wife, Dinah, all of Bedford; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Witcher of Washington, D.C. and Mrs. Frances Brown of Altavista; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Universal Outreach Church of God in Bedford, by Bishop Edward Crews, with burial in Thomas Chapel Cemetery. GAILEY, Delbert L., 79, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, March 31, 1997. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Normandy and was a recipient of the Purple Heart two different times. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth W. Gailey. He is survived by two sons, Harry G. Gailey, Stephen L. Gailey; grandsons, Adam, Jacob & Shawn; great-granddaughter, Danielle; special friend, Shirley Beeler; sisters, Mary Skinner, Alma Reed, both of Kansas. GIBSON, Mildred Stanley, 76, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, March 31, 1997. She was the widow of Charlie O. Gibson, and a former resident of Cloverdale. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy G. and Toby Wells, Troutville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Nancy Gibson, Vinton, Ronnie and Jeanie Gibson, Roanoke, Dale and Connie Gibson, Lynchburg; seven grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; three half brothers; and a half sister. GRAY, Clara Hull, 75, of Huddleston, passed away Monday, March 31, 1997, at her residence. She was born March 7, 1922, in Welch, W.Va., a daughter of the late Luther and Ella Mae Hull. Her husband was the late James Everette Gray. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Patricia Gray of Kopperston, W.Va.; a brother, Royce Hull of Huddleston; two grandsons, Shawn and J. R. Gray, both of Kopperston W.Va., and a special friend, Dillard Grubb of Smith Mountain Lake. HASH, Thomas George, 45, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, March 30, 1997. He was a Veteran of United States Marine Corps. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Franklin Hash. Hash, four sons, DeAnthony Graves, Chris Graves, Darren Graves and Antwone Stokes all of Roanoke; his grandmother, Lula Johnson of Fries, Va; nine brothers and sisters, Selma Dungee, John G. (Rosalyn) Hash, Greg L. (Lisa) Hash, Jane E. Williams, Jeff L. (Janell) Hash, and Glenda Hash all of Roanoke; Anita (Charles) Hairston of Rocky Mt; Stuart (Yvonne) Hash of Roanoke; Clarissa (Darrell) Nicholson of Roanoke; four grandchildren and a host of uncles, aunts, other relatives and friends and a devoted friend Katie Edwards. JAMISON, Olga Swallow, 78, of Pembroke, died peacefully at her home Monday evening, March 31, 1997, following a courageous and trying battle with cancer. Born in Northampton, Pa. on October 10, 1918, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Susco Swallow. After graduating from Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa., she came to Giles County in 1940 and for 37 years taught business courses in Pembroke and Giles High Schools. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pembroke. On January 2, 1943, she married ``Rastus'' Royce Parker Jamison, who lovingly cared for her until she was called home Monday. She is also survived by her son, Glenn P. ``Skipper'' Jamison and his wife, Kathie, of Wichita Falls, Texas; two grandsons, Andy and Brandon Jamison of Wichita Falls; two sisters, Martha Hrishko and Jeri Donchez, both of Bethlehem, Pa.; three sisters-in-law, Eula Mae Williams, Ottie Jamison Quesenberry, and Ruby Jamison, all of Pembroke; and one brother-in-law, Jack Jamison of Pembroke. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 3, 1997, at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Pembroke with the Rev. Eddie Kendall, the Rev. Max Brown, and the Rev. Raymond Kelley officiating. Burial will be in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. JANNEY, Charles Raye, 83, of Copper Hill, died Monday, March 31, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital. Mr. Janney was proprietor for 56 year s of Janney's Exxon, located at the intersection of Route 221 and 610 at Copper Hill. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Janney was preceded in death by a son, Paul Bennett Janney; and a sister, Alma Shank. Surviving are his wife, Helen McNiel Janney, Copper Hill; three daughters and one son-in-law, Barbara and Robert ``Jugie'' Goodwin, Roanoke, Eleanor Louise Janney, Copper Hill, Esther Raye Janney, Front Royal; two grandchildren, Paul B. ``Chip'' Goodwin, Julie G. Wilburn and husband, Guy Wilburn; two great-grandchildren, Morgan Lewis Wilburn, Bailey Hobson Wilburn; three sisters, Thelma Nash, Marie Murphy, Lelia Huff; two brothers, Thurman Janney, Chester Janney. JOINER, Myrtle Hash, 93, of Salem, passed away Sunday, March 30, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Letcher L. Joiner. She is survived by one son, Herbert L. (Mamie) Joiner of Aberdeen, Md.; three daughters, Marian J. Roach of Salem, Virginia J. (John) Miller of Fleetwood, N.C., and Louise J. (Jessie) Smith of Bedford; one step-daughter, Elizabeth Page of Roanoke; five brothers, Bishop George M. (Helen) Hash, Clyde (Edna) Hash, Marvin (Edith) Hash, J. Y. PAINTER, Ernest Henry, 86, of Lexington, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 31, 1997, from Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Lexington. Mr. Painter was born on January 31, 1911, in Charleston, W.Va., and was a son of the late Samuel Edward Painter and Pearl Brineger Painter. He was retired from Lees Carpet, was a member, past Elder and Deacon of the Lauderdale A.R.P. Church in Lexington, and was a past member of Rockbridge Lodge #59 I.O.O.F. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha P. Reynolds. Mr. Painter is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Edna McCormick and Mrs. Ann Wilmore, both of Lexington, and Mrs. Teresa Hill of Buena Vista; three sons, Edward Painter of Lexington, Calvin Painter of Staunton and John Painter of Charlottesville; three sisters, Miss Rosa Painter and Mrs. Lydia Blackburn, both of Lexington, and Mrs. Elizabeth Hill of Dunbar, W.Va.; two brothers, Eugene Painter and Charlie Painter, both of Dunbar, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. RICE, Lula Agnew Hambrick, 88, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, March 31, 1997. She was a member of First Wesleyan Church and had retired from Kenrose Manufacturing Company. Mrs. Rice was the widow of Herbert E. Rice and is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Alberta Agnew, Roanoke; five grandchildren and their spouses, Kathy Agnew,Texas, Terry Agnew, Roanoke, Sheila and Jeff Edmondson, Roanoke, Mark and Dominique Agnew, Maryland, Sherri and Christopher Harrison, New Mexico; ten great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. RILEY, Ronald Lee, 55, of Goodlettesville, Tenn., formerly of Richmond and Roanoke, Va., died Saturday, M arch 29, 1997. He was a Naval veteran, with four years service and was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby L. Riley, his father, Harry Lee Riley and a sister, Shirley A. Riley. Surviving are his wife, Cindy Riley; two sons, Roderick Riley and Reginald Riley, both of Nashville, Tenn.; stepdaughter, Jennifer Lawson, Goodlettesville, Tenn.; his mother, Isabell M. Riley, Vinton; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Jerry Hinchee, Roanoke, Betty and Danny LaPrad, Vinton, Sandra and Harry Baker, Richmond; three grandchildren; mother-in-law, Helen M. Cline; two sisters-in-law and their families; one brother-in-law and his family. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 1997. ROWE, Marion Ulmer, 73, of Wytheville, died Monday, March 31, 1997, in the Forsyth Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was born in Dublin, Ga., the daughter of the late Frank Malcolm and Ronnie Ulmer. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, and Evansham Chapter #97, Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Richard Rowe Jr.; and two sisters, Nellie Ulmer Attaway and Edna Ulmer Gould. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Thomas Sawyers of Penhook, Carolyn and Ralph Julian McHone of Kernersville, N.C.; a son, James Richard Rowe III of Dublin; one sister, Geri Ulmer McDonald of Tulatin, Ore.; two brothers, Frank Malcolm Ulmer Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., Jahnz Ulmer of Glenville, Ga.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Emily Umberger Rowe of Crockett, Susie Rowe Oglesby of Draper, John H. and Margaret Owen Rowe of Roanoke, James R. Gould of Medford, Ore. Four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three nephews also survive. TAYLOR, Lyd ia Lou, 80, of Marion, passed away Monday, March 31, 1997, at her residence. Lydia was born April 11, 1916 to Andrew Caswell Taylor and Mary Catherine Norman Taylor in Smyth County. She was a member of the Furnace Hill Lutheran Church and was retired from the Harwood Manufacturing Company. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Hugh Mauney, Marion; one brother, Mack Taylor and his wife, Sadie, Lancaster, Ohio; three grandchildren, Linda (White) Burchette and her husband, Steve, Jefferson, N.C., Michael White, Hickory, N.C., Greg White and his wife, Stephanie, Hillsville; two great-grandchildren, Cassie and Christian White, Hillsville; one stepgreat-grandchild, Stephen Burchette, Jefferson, N.C.; sister-in-law, Mabel Taylor, Waynesville, Mo. Also surviving are several very special nieces and nephews. TELLMAN, Ruby Jane, 92, of Galax, died Saturday, March 29, 1997, following a stroke. She was born in Watertown, Mich. to Gustave and Victoria Cash. Following her graduation from Michigan State University, she taught at the elementary and junior high school levels in Michigan, Tennessee and Ohio for almost 50 years. After moving to Galax in 1976, she was active in the Twin County Regional Hospital Volunteer Program and United Methodist Women of the First United Methodist Church until failing eyesight kept her at home. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Ralph; two sons, David Tellman of Bethlehem, N.H. and Stephen Tellman of Washougal, Wash.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Suzanne. A funeral service will be held at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home with Rev. Don Nation officiating on Wednesday, April 2, 1997, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Galax. THOMAS, Betty Lou, 65, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, April 1, 1997. She is survived by one sister, Ruby Wade; and two sons, Robert M. Thomas, and Roy C. Thomas. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

TYREE, Paul William, 74, of Salem, passed away Monday, March 31, 1997, at his home after a long illness. He was a retired Army Captain. He was the son of the late Bill and Sallie Randolph Tyree. He is survived by two daughters, Karla Dempsey of Salem, Paula Williamson, Darlington, S.C.; sisters, Germaine Rorer of Salem, Hazel Roye, Roanoke, Nancy McGlothlin, Troutville. Also surviving are five grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducte d at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 1997, at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Moore officiating. VALENTINE, Irene Ashworth, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, March 30, 1997. She was born April 17, 1897 in Tacoma. Va. A longtime resident of Charlottesville, she is survived by her brother, Dr. John William Ashworth Jr. of Emory. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 1997, at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Charlottesville. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. WHITE, Edmonia Rachel Irvine, 66, of Buena Vista, died Monday, March 31, 1997, in t he University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville. Mrs. White was born on April 27, 1930 in Rockbridge County, and was a daughter of the late Chap S. Irvine and Nannie Rachel Potter Irvine. She was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints, Buena Vista. She was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Reid. Mrs. White is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra W. and Larry Mohler, Sharon W. and Thomas West; one daughter, Janet C. White; two sons, Jeffrey D. White, Gregory S. White, all of Buena Vista; two sisters, Mary Bane, Betty Irvine; and one brother, Ellis Irvine, all of Lexington; and four grandchildren, Morgan and Andrew Mohler, Laura Ann and Scotty West. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 3, 1997, at 2:30 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Bishop Edwin Sexton and Doug Larson officiating, with burial to follow in the Collierstown Presbyterian Cemetery, Lexington.
